S2

Karen Pirie season 2 release date confirmed as acclaimed series tackles dark new cold case
The ITV crime drama is finally returning.

Season 2, which has once again been adapted by Emer Kenny from one of Val McDermid's novels, sees Lauren Lyle return as the titular police officer, who has now been promoted to detective inspector.

The synopsis for season 2 says: "The 1984 case of Catriona and Adam Grant has confounded investigators and intrigued the public like no other.

"Catriona, the charming young heiress to a vast oil fortune, and her two-year-old son Adam, were brutally kidnapped at gunpoint outside a fish and chip shop in Fife.

The ransom notes that followed stirred up an uncontrollable press storm, but when the culprits fell silent, the police faltered, and Catriona and Adam were never seen again."

The synopsis continues: "Now, a man’s body has been discovered, with indisputable links to the original kidnap. With the first piece of evidence in decades, Karen must assemble an unbeatable team alongside her sincere and lovable sidekick DC Jason ‘Mint’ Murray (Chris Jenks) and the brilliant – but romantically complicated – DS Phil Parhatka (Zach Wyatt).

With the international renown of the kidnap and the constant pressure from Catriona’s father, Sir Broderick Grant (James Cosmo), the team take on the biggest challenge of their careers to date.

"As Karen delves deeper into what happened in the autumn of 1984, political grudges and painful secrets reveal themselves, and it soon becomes clear… the past is far from dead."

Also starring in season 2 are Kenny herself, other returnees Steve John Shepherd and Rakhee Thakrar, and newcomers Saskia Ashdown, Frances Tomelty, John Michie, Julia Brown, Mark Rowley, Kat Ronney, Conor Berry, Stuart Campbell, James Fleet and more.

From the book, Karen sees herself through someone else’s eyes
‘a wee fat woman crammed into a Marks and Spencer suit, mid brown hair in a bob needing a visit to the hairdresser- cheekbones might be ok if they were visible under the fat’
Thats not exact as I’m writing from memory.
I know it’s not the story but I did feel what I was seeing on the tv was not the character I remembered.

Well she’s not fat or dark haired on tv

This discussion of looks and dressing style makes me recall Barbara Havers - so different in looks on the ITV series in comparison to books.

So Mary shot Cat but didn't know , then they all escaped out of the cave apart from Cat who they thought must be under the rock fall, but no-one went to check .

Was enjoying this but then it went on for too long and what with the never ending chasing after people , I almost lost the will to live 😴

burnoutbabe · 04/08/2025 16:21

The men knew she was dead under the rocks.
the parents assumed she escaped and went away to spend the ransom money.

MegMo · 05/08/2025 13:16

I didn't enjoy this series as much as series 1. I kept nodding off! It was really hard to keep track of all the characters past and present and Fergus looked almost as old as his father!

My attention was continually distracted by the giant bum bag Karen wore constantly.

What about the half mast trousers I wondered if she was going for a Bay City Roller look.

I'm assuming that was a character quirk of hers?

I really struggled with the last episode, like PP have said it descended into farce with the Malta thing. And Karen just seems really dull, you'd think after two series they'd have developed her character a bit more 🫤

I think she's supposed to be some kind of rule breaking maverick. She just comes across as quite unprofessional with things like not reporting the relationship and banging her head, wailing about lack of progress etc...

I really wanted to like her (and did in the first series) but she just bored me in this one. Her relationship with the DC (DS?) was unconvincing - usually the DI and DS have some chemistry!

mum2jakie · 05/08/2025 20:58

Yeah there wasn't much chemistry. More chemistry between the two officers who went out to Malta together.

moto748e · 05/08/2025 21:04

The only good line in the show was "What would Karen do?" - "Go and scream in her car". One of the few bits that rang true.

Tallisker · 06/08/2025 11:00

There was an article in the Radio Times about how the actress hated the bumbag too. It just made her look weird and unprofessional, like a student activist.

No the mining was just a side point. Nothing to do with the grants.

neither parent knew Catarina as in the caves they all assumed gone off in the car. And I’d say the Rock fall killed her, not the gun shot. So a tragic accident (which one may say she brought on herself and she did kill the other bloke)

The mining thing was about Fergus being heavily involved. This meant he couldn’t be got rid of when he refused to leave his wife for Cat and broke her heart.
Cat subsequently felt let down by both her Dad and Fergus.

RedRosie · 06/08/2025 19:56

I've just caught up with this as we haven't been able to watch live.

As a fan of ScandiNoir, I absolutely loved it.
