I’m getting snacks and drinks in and watching the whole thing while pretending I’m 12 again. Can’t wait for the Quo to kick it off in half an hour! Anyone else gonna watch?

Queen rehearsed for three days before this. I don't think most of the rest did. They were perfectionists. RIP Freddie. Was watching a retrospective on BBC 4 last night. What a talent, what a showman. Sad

There's quite a few of those reaction videos on YouTube where you see young black Americans watching Queen at LiveAid. Their reaction is amazing to watch, they're all gobsmacked by them!😂

SwedishEdith · 12/07/2025 19:42

Hate Sting versions of Police songs. I know they're his songs but they lose all the energy this way.

MarySueSaidBoo · 12/07/2025 19:43

I remember being glued to the TV all day watching this but for the life of me I can't remember where we were living at the time as my parents separated that year. Sting looks so young Shock I loved Nik Kershaw but my heart belonged to Duran Duran and Depeche Mode in those days.

HauntedBungalow · 12/07/2025 19:43

That radio gaga bit was good though. And all of it had more about it than Sting self indulgently wailing and keening.

JaneJeffer · 12/07/2025 19:43

I never believe those YouTube videos where they haven’t heard of people. Do their parents never play any music?

AgnesX · 12/07/2025 19:44

It's all, well some of it is , better than I remember musically. All the Beeb dj's are so cheesy and self conscious. And you can tell who was going to turn into, or already were, pretentious prats.

Looking at you Sting.

EverardDeTroyes · 12/07/2025 19:44

I only found out watching the documentary last week that Sting had just broken up from the Police, so I suppose he does OK here without the other 2. Not very rock and roll though.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 12/07/2025 19:44

Bore off Sting

Not a Queen fan - I watched all day for David Bowie. I thought they were brilliant, had the audience eating out of their hands.

HauntedBungalow · 12/07/2025 19:46

Sting sounds like I imagine Kevin from motherland would sound.

I have no idea! I do enjoy their enthusiasm tho 😁

JulesJules · 12/07/2025 19:46

I watched this in a youth hostel in Cairns, Queensland. I was travelling round Oz on a 6mth work your way round the world visa.
D2 is amused by the hair and long coats. It really shows who could perform well live, Queen especially were brilliant. And Phil Collins could really sing (but where's the gorilla for the drum bit??)

JaneJeffer · 12/07/2025 19:47

Phil’s hair is atrocious

Nothing wrong with being a perfectionist (massive Queen fan here). Did you watch Live Aid at 40, the 3 part documentary that was on last week? Bob Geldof really didn't like Queen.... says everything i want to know about the man.

I love Queen. I saw some of it. There was a bit of inter-generational stuff going on. Glam rock went out of fashion when punk came in. It took a few years for the cool young people to get over themselves and accept that maybe, just maybe, their immediate predecessors had something to offer.

Not just the hair

YourBlueSquid · 12/07/2025 19:47

Bad camera angle for Phil and his hair

IPartridge · 12/07/2025 19:47

I was 15 and into The Smiths so most of the acts didn't appeal to me. And many were very uncool.

Uricon2 · 12/07/2025 19:48

I was a big Ultravox fan and saw them live back in the day many times. Midge had a really, really good voice. When they did the anniversary concert years later, apparently he and Geldof had agreed they wouldn't play and suddenly BG was on stage. MU was interviewed and absolutely raging about it as he was working behind the scenes as planned "I might have known he'd do this". He contributed a lot to Live Aid and doesn't get the recognition IMO he deserves.

On the day of Live Aid, Queen really woke the crowd up.

Geldof was of the punk generation who were all about rebelling against the likes of Queen. Their symphonic song structures, elaborate production, meticulous musicianship & multi-layered 3 part vocal harmonies weren’t very punk.

It was the 80s! Everyone had atrocious hair 😄

Raahh · 12/07/2025 19:49

Whatever I think of Phil, this is a classic song.

But I will forever associate it now, with a drumming gorilla.

Thanks Cadbury.

Appalonia · 12/07/2025 19:50

I was too cool for Queen and Phil back in the day, but can appreciate how talented they were now. ( and find most modern music really soulless these days...)

I certainly did 😆

That curl on his forehead always annoyed me

The great thing about the 80’s was you could love The Smiths and Wham! at the same time and nobody judged you!
