I’m getting snacks and drinks in and watching the whole thing while pretending I’m 12 again. Can’t wait for the Quo to kick it off in half an hour! Anyone else gonna watch?

God I wish they'd have had The Smiths on. Morrissey was too much of a miserable bastard though. Also did not own a big white shirt, I suspect.

But there was good atrocious and bad atrocious and he’s the latter

I love Queen. I saw some of it. There was a bit of inter-generational stuff going on. Glam rock went out of fashion when punk came in. It took a few years for the cool young people to get over themselves and accept that maybe, just maybe, their immediate predecessors had something to offer.

Except I'm pretty sure it was Geldof now looking back and commenting on Queen, so he still hasn't grown up from his punk youth.

The great thing about the 80’s was you could love The Smiths and Wham! at the same time and nobody judged you!

I would have judged myself 😄

Oh he definitely had a big white shirt Grin

Re-living my youth ☺️ loved Adam Ant, Sade, Spandau.... hard to believe it's been 40 years!

Totally this! My kids are early 20s and quite like their 80s music (mainly thanks to Tiktok), and they are amazed by this.

Jellykat · 12/07/2025 19:53

Late to the party, but bloody hell where did those 40 years go???!
I was 21 at the time, and remember being glued to the telly the whole time with the Sitting room window wide open.. the street was quiet, every house around me was watching it seemed!

dapsnotplimsolls · 12/07/2025 19:53

Oh do bugger off Sting.

Yeah, there's a difference between two-tone spikey badger (cool atrocious) and hairline sliding down the back of your neck (uncool atrocious).

I certainly did! My mum, born in the 1930s and cursed (from her point of view) with dead straight hair, started perming it as soon as she could afford to. She started nagging me to perm my hair, also dead straight, as soon as I was in my teens. In a weak moment I gave way eventually. Unfortunately got married during that period. Rarely look at the wedding photos! Grin

MarySueSaidBoo · 12/07/2025 19:54

The stage is so basic!! Concerts have come a long way in 40 years to be fair.

Geldof was of the punk generation who were all about rebelling against the likes of Queen. Their symphonic song structures, elaborate production, meticulous musicianship & multi-layered 3 part vocal harmonies weren’t very punk.

Wasnt there a backlash against Queen for playing Sun City South Africa the year before.

JaneJeffer · 12/07/2025 19:54

Oh Howard Jones

This is one of my favourite early 80s songs.

Well, he's obviously a tosser in many ways, but nobody's perfect.

£1000 house deposit! Different times

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/07/2025 19:59

<drool>

Raahh · 12/07/2025 19:59

I was (am) blessed with naturally curly hair- but it didn't look like the obviosuly permed hair that everyone else had. So I still didn't quite fit in.

I did have it permed. That was a mistake.

JaneJeffer · 12/07/2025 19:59

£1000 deposit on their first house, gulp
