I’m getting snacks and drinks in and watching the whole thing while pretending I’m 12 again. Can’t wait for the Quo to kick it off in half an hour! Anyone else gonna watch?

Surely it's a bit early for that? Crowded House didn't release that til 1987.

Might have been a different concert.

Ah, yes, I must be getting mixed up.

JaneJeffer · 12/07/2025 20:29

The Beach Boys!

I was there and still remember very little of it

Likewise!😄I’m watching it and keep saying “I don’t remember that!” But it was brilliant.

Jellykat · 12/07/2025 20:31

Have to admit I was more a Siouxsie / Bauhaus girl, but totally appreciated this for the event it was..
Oh Brian, another one departed 😞

SwedishEdith · 12/07/2025 20:31

Ah, Brian Wilson looks well there. Wonder how many acts/singers are now dead?

Shetlands · 12/07/2025 20:31

Gloriousgardener11 · 12/07/2025 20:27

I’m thinking how bored the crowd seem to be compared to big concerts now.
Also how ‘white’ the audience are considering the whole point of the concert was to raise money for Africa.

Who else did you think would be there in huge numbers? In 1985, the percentage of people identifying as White British in England and Wales was 95%.

I think it might have been a Mandela one.

The 80s really did have the best music. And so many albums/songs from then stand up so well still today.

Yes I was just thinking that so many of these bands still have a career. More low key maybe but still around and rocking or at least left a legacy.
I was 24 and remember it so well. Friends had a bbq and had it on all day.

It was real! I remember having the exhibition brochure and feeling magical.

Edited

Oh wow, thanks for sharing that!😁

Enjoying watching this. We had a watch party at my boyfriend’s, now husband’s, flat. He’d bought a video recorder so he could record the concert. I was 20, and we had just celebrated our first year anniversary. Hard to believe it’s 40 years ago!

EverardDeTroyes · 12/07/2025 20:35

Which one is Brian? I only know him as an older man.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/07/2025 20:35

Blue shirt. On the right of the lineup.

SpottyAardvark · 12/07/2025 20:35

Considering it took a musical genius many months to write & produce ‘Good Vibrations’ in the studio, during which Brian had to invent many of the recording techniques used, it’s not surprising it doesn’t really work live.

Appalonia · 12/07/2025 20:35

Beachboys, another band that I didn't realise at the time just how brilliant they were. But there were SO MANY brilliant acts back then, we were spoilt for choice!

Her whole outfit appears to be made out of tablecloths...

But fab voice!

I think it was Vivian Westwood 🥰

I'm guessing you are too young to remember it live! Yes the audience is white because that's representative of the population of the time and I don't think the crowd look bored. Wait till Queen perform. At least everybody is watching and not worrying about taking pics to put on their social media.

Appalonia · 12/07/2025 20:38

For those of you who were there on the day, it must have been exhausting, especially in the heat! How did you cope?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/07/2025 20:39

My husband has pointed out that it's twice as long from Live Aid to now as it was from the Beach Boys releasing these songs to Live Aid. Gulp.

dapsnotplimsolls · 12/07/2025 20:40

Volume upppppppppp.

Evenstar · 12/07/2025 20:40

I was 20 in my second year at uni and had to get a coach to Doncaster for my cousin’s wedding, my brother got on the same coach further up the M1. We were both really fed up as we wanted to watch it (would probably have gone if we hadn’t had to go to the wedding 😔)

To make matters worse we were staying at my Grandma’s that night and she made everyone go to bed and turned the TV off as the house was full, including mattresses in the hall and she was sleeping on the sofa!

Really enjoying the music and memories and the acts I saw live at other concerts.

princesspadam · 12/07/2025 20:40

The beach boys look old even then

IPartridge · 12/07/2025 20:40

Uk has Noel Edmonds and the States have Jack Nicholson 😄
