I'm looking forward to it.

For the millionth time - I don't care, it isn't a problem to me if Grayson Perry gets a stiffy in a dress

Not even if it's the sight of your wee granny out doing her shopping that's turning him on, or the little boy next door jumping in puddles?

It may not be a problem to you but it is for many others and if we want to speak about it we will.

Jesus wept.

Movie week next Tuesday and I love it because the music is always good 😊

Stop arguing. This thread is to discuss a sewing show. If you want to argue about Grayson Perry then please go and start your own thread to do so.

A thousand times this. I try and avoid the bunfight threads on MN, and was rather hoping one about a lovely sewing programme might be OK!

How do you know what is turning people on during their day to day lives? Like Queen Elizabeth I - I don’t seek to see into men’s souls. You could be having a wank while posting now, for all I know & care.

Sorry, you are right. I shouldn’t have let myself get sucked in & I’ll stop now

This. I wasn't going to comment on it any more and got sucked back in. I'm sorry. From now on 🤐

StrongandNorthern · 29/08/2025 18:55

Well I've not been persuaded 're Grayson Perry.
I don't think he's a dangerous pervert bent (forgive the apparent pun) on corrupting the public.
I think he's a brilliant artist, who produced a great (inclusive and inspiring) arts programme for all (it was) during Covid.
I also still think that some (thankfully in the minority ) of posters on this part of this thread are small minded, ill informed bigots.
But Hey Ho ... Most aren't.

I agree.

Just watched it. It seems a shame that gaynor who is such a good sewer, keeps getting marked down for not being adventurous.
loved cazs dress. Loved those things as a child, back page of bunty.

CorrectionCentre · 01/09/2025 08:18

The judging works like skating and diving, where there the technical difficulty of the routine plays a part in scoring as well as the degree of 'perfection' in execution.
Other sewers are choosing more technically difficulty garments than Gaynor, so even with minor errors in execution, they can rank higher than a perfectly executed, more simple design. And in the sewing bee they have to meet the brief too. So greater creativity will raise the 'score'. Gaynor chooses to keep things simple, so limits her overall potential score.

ShoAndSew · 01/09/2025 09:14

interesting point: perhaps they should allocate a degree of difficulty to the m2m plans, so that we can see a bit of transparency with their choice of winner?

GenieGenealogy · 01/09/2025 12:00

So like diving, where it's like "Gaynor is attempting a 5.5 difficulty dress" or "Orla's dress is rated 7.8 in difficulty"?

ShoAndSew · 01/09/2025 12:56

yep! that would add an interesting dimention. Do you (Gaynor) play it relatively safe and hope immaculate sewing gets you through, or do you (Kit) go for something complicated and spend a lot of the day whizzing through stuff that may not work out.

That's always how it's come across to me in the way they discuss the rankings. Obviously not as numerically precise as in competitive sports but in principle. Credit is definitely given to the amount of work and complexity from what the judges reference in their comments.
I dont think it could be made explicit in numbers, but I think its been made clear in what they say.

I agree, and mostly, particularly with GBBO, I think doing something relatively simple really well, to the point of perfection, should merit higher marks than a botched attempt at something complicated.

However, an A Line dress with some cut outs and frayed edges is too simple. If she’d added black fabric to the edges, and a cut out on the back, and made a more fitted or obviously 1960s outfit, she would have done better.

CorrectionCentre · 01/09/2025 18:11

It's a balancing act, I think @FlowerUser and needs participants to make good judgements. Successful ones keep pushing themselves just outside their comfort zones and gaining skils and confidence along the way. Foolish ones take on more than they can manage and fail. Anxious ones stick in their comfort zone and rank in the middle until the latter stages when all the foolish and less skilled ones have all gone. But they don't make champions.

Dan was on Instagram yesterday, he unboxed his makes from the programme that had been returned to him. It was interesting looking back at what he'd made while he discussed his thoughts about them. I liked Dan.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 01/09/2025 20:04

Could I ask someone to start a new thread when this fills up tomorrow please. There's only about 50 posts left but I won't have access to my computer for the next show. Thanks. (Now I'm doubting the etiquette, it is usually the original poster who's responsible for starting the subsequent thread, isn't it?)

He's on Facebook too making costumes for himself and others to perform in. I like him too although I was originally a bit dubious. (completely unreasonably)

Re posters writing that they thought Gaynor is trying to get eliminated. I thought that about Novello when she was sent out of the contest. I thought she'd been pretty good up until that round, then everything she made in that particular episode went horribly wrong. It made me wonder if she'd got bored or found she couldn't commit to the time needed - it looked like she had a pretty full life.

Maybe start the thread tonight, and we'll try to encourage people to not use it till this one's full up? @BlackAmericanoNoSugar

My daughter said the same thing .

This is a really interesting challenge. It looks technically difficult.

Gaynor’s not having a good week so far.
