I don't think his art is all that, personally.

Well, as he would say himself - what counts as great art is subjective.

StrongandNorthern · 28/08/2025 23:43

I genuinely can't believe some of the 'opinions' expressed here 're Grayson Perry!!
I just can't.
e.g. apparently he is a 'pervert', worthy of a mention in the same bracket as Jimmy Saville ... etc etc.
What small minded, nasty bigotry.
Oh, and by the way - he does a little more than 'crafts' - ceramics, tapestries, paintings, architecture, interior design, writing ... more talent in his little finger than some of his 'critics' on here.

Sausagenbacon · 29/08/2025 06:48

Sorry if I find it creepy that a man enjoys dressing up as a little girl and wore a black dildo that stuck out of the front of a dress.

How very bigoted of me.

On another note, what i find so admirable about ALL the contestants is that they don't panic. When I sew anything remotely tricky, I have to go and have a sit down and a cup of tea at regular intervals.

Yes that is just weird

You'd have needed smelling salts in medieval times when men often wore elaborate codpieces Grin. Honestly, it's just clothes. In Grayson Perry's case clothes designed to make an impact - which they clearly have. Artist likes to provoke - shocker! I also like his ceramics and tapestries - each to their own.

Sausagenbacon · 29/08/2025 08:12

Oh yes, and it would perfectly acceptable if people wore shoes with such long toes that they have to tie them up to their shoes. Because that's what they did in the middle ages.

haha! The tight trousers some men wore in the late 60s and 70s left nothing to the imagination.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/08/2025 08:15

I had a picture of Marc Bolan there but it hasn't come up - maybe it was censored ! https://dangerousminds.net/comments/battle_of_the_bulge_classic_rock_stars_and_their_packages/

I don't think Grayson Perry is aiming for acceptable - in any aspects of his public persona or art. Artists like to provoke and in his case it has worked. Maybe take a look at his ceramics and tapestries - I think they are great and I enjoy a British working class artist who aims to engage with the public through his art. Art isn't necessarily meant to make us comfortable.

You failed to mention that GP is open about the sexually stimulating aspect of his actions. That is a significant difference to simply being an artist using his art to 'challenge' .
By dressing as 'Claire' publicly, he is involving the public in his fetish. That's what posters are objecting to.

Sausagenbacon · 29/08/2025 09:20

Thanks for patronising me. I'm well aware of his work.

NebulousSadTimes · 29/08/2025 09:41

To those who think we are being small minded/bigoted/insert criticism of choice when we opine about Grayson Perry's fetish, would you be quite so forgiving if it was Dave from Asda who once drew a decent stick figure but his real skill is that he can stack two shelves in one go? Is it the artwork that the person has made money from that makes you want us to ignore their perversion? Or should we just shut up about fetishes, kinks and perversions in general because you don't want a light shone on them?

Victoriawould24 · 29/08/2025 10:16

I really wanted Gaynor and her traditional and long practiced sewing skills to do well but her lack of imagination and enthusiasm has started to irritate me now.
I don’t think it’s anything to do with her age (look at Esme) but more just a personality thing which in ordinary circumstances is all well and good but as PP have said she must have watched the show and understood it’s not just sewing skills being tested.
It’s shame they didn’t put her (and us) out of our misery and send her home this week.
I was half expecting her to have bowed out after this week but she was in next week’s trailer.

ShoAndSew · 29/08/2025 10:44

I don't watch the trailer because of spoilers 😂

Unlike many on Mumsnet, I couldn’t give a hoot if Dave in Asda wears a dress- it’s just clothes! The clothes you are wearing now would be considered sexualised in Afghanistan, it is societal context that decides what is appropriate and what is kinky - the clothes themselves are just fabric. As an artist Grayson Perry uses his appearance for effect- like Dali’s moustache or Frida Khalo’s eyebrow. You don’t have to like it - chacun a son gout & all that.

Apart from that one comment, I don't think people are suggesting they have a problem with men wearing dresses. The discussion is about Grayson Perry wearing a phallus, specifically at an event for a children's organisation, and the fact that, as he has himself said many times, he wears dresses for sexual reasons.

FlowerUser · 29/08/2025 11:56

It’s the massive black penis prosthetic that he has sticking out from his dress.

I don’t care about the dress. I care that he is showing off a massive dildo. It’s inappropriate in public.

HeadNorth · 29/08/2025 12:02

Yeah and you are allowed to care and I am allowed to think it is a bit silly and fun. Others may have different thoughts. Each to their own.

CaptainMyCaptain · 29/08/2025 12:58

Maybe they should have done Ancient Greek Art for art week.

Edit: it was just a dress ffs. They said his name once and didn't say anything else about him.

I agree! Ridiculous attitudes, calling him a pervert etc.just because he might have different ideas and likes. I've been shocked by the narrow-mindedness here.

LittleBitofBread · 29/08/2025 13:28

Mate, there's 'different ideas and likes' and then there's 'using unknowing/unconsenting members of the public for your own sexual ends, and wearing puffy dresses because they're handy for hiding your erection.'

Which they didn't do on Sewing Bee.

That wasn't actually me. I don't understand why people are going on about it because they mentioned his name once and made a dress he designed which was a little bit like the one he wears as Claire.

LittleBitofBread · 29/08/2025 13:37

People are 'going on about it' because presenting him as eccentric but innocuous inspiration for a nice dress is somewhat disingenuous, if not dishonest, of the BBC.
