Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

I find this interesting also as I always think of Shirley Henderson as Spud’s girlfriend in Trainspotting!

“What are you’s talking about?”
”Football. What are you’s talking about?”
”Shopping”

Was Kelly Macdonald the one who played a gf in trainspotting, the one with bedding (🤢) incident?

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 07/06/2025 10:19

Oh and to whoever mentioned The Better Sister earlier on thank you. I’m now binging that too!

I did really enjoy Dept Q, and it definitely seemed to set itself up for a 2nd series I think.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 07/06/2025 10:20

Yes. She's been in Gosford Park and Harry Potter too. I like Kelly

Definitely a second series pending. I need to know more about Akram!

I have the biggest crush on Akram!

There really is something about him, isn’t there?! I was trying to work out what he had been in before and did have a look online, but I couldn’t really see whatever it was I was thinking of, but a pp mentioned it above so that was handy. I hate having the actor equivalent of an ear worm!

Ive always wanted to invent an app like Shazam for music when you’re watching something and want to know what song it is, but for actors. So you just click on it as you’re watching and it’ll come up in a notification! Now if someone invents this I’d like my cut please 😂

eta: the actor who played Sam Haig was bothering me all the way through as I could not for the life of me remember what he’d been in years ago. I don’t know if anyone else was wondering the same? Initially I couldn’t find his name but when I did I realised it was Casualty! Years ago, I’ve not watched it so many years so he must’ve been the relatively early years. I was so pleased to solve that one. I really do need that app!

Sorry, I seem to be all over this thread now, so apologies for that, but I agree, Akram’s background would be fascinating I think. He was a great character too.

Prime Video? As can’t see it on there either, or through Amazon prime shopping site/app?

Yesterday, when I searched, it linked to a third-party set-up that had it, and you could stream a free trial, etc. I found that by searching for Pour Ellle instead of Anything For Her. But trying it today, it's not there.
I've always thought this was a flaw, if you want to watch a particular film nowadays, if it's not on Netflix or Amazon, what do you do? Time was, head for your local video store. Those days have gone! But I am delighted to see that 20th Century Flicks in Bristol is still going strong. I was a regular there back in the day, when it was in Clifton.

Her finest hour for me was in State Of Plat, which is still one of the best things I've ever seen on telly.

His background is wonderfully explained in the books. But his name is Assad.

Oh that’s interesting, is that from the first book onwards or later in the series? I’m assuming this series is based on the first book? Ish?

It came up under both (either) name when I searched in JustWatch, but showed no streaming at all. I did have access to Plex on somebody’s server for a while, so anything I wanted to watch, that had either been moved to a different streaming platform that I didn’t have (looking at you especially, Gray’s Anatomy and Station 19!), or wasn’t anywhere else could be downloaded and added for me. So that would’ve been ideal except that particular server has apparently gone poooompf and so is unfortunately no more, so now I can’t get it there either. Although I do also have access to another couple of people on there that I may cheekily ask…! I am very intrigued now and am determined to watch it!

Btw, what year is this?

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 12:57

I'm not really a fan of Matthew Goode, but it's refreshing to see him play a very different character to the usual upper class type.

I agree. I think this role showed that he is much more versatile than the roles we have seen him in so far.

The DVD is available for a few quid on ebay.

Ish is the word because they have changed the plot, which is a great shame I think. Assad's story emerges over the course of seversl books. Rose first appears in book two (iirc) and that is quite a story culminsting in book 7 The Scarred Woman.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 07/06/2025 14:15

can we discuss the plot on this thread or is there another thread discussing spoilers?

Surely we can dicsuss it here most have seen it now haven’t they. If not start a spoiler thread! I have questions about Lyle and Sam 🤔

HilaryThorpe · 07/06/2025 14:40

Assad / Akram's story is book 8 Victim 2117.

Oh no! Does that mean we will need to wait another 7 seasons before we get his story?

I've started a spoilers thread for those who want to discuss the plot.

Well you might or you might not, given what they have done to book 1! You have to read all 10 to find out about the shooting, but they are well worth it.

That has been my least favourite Dept Q book. It was difficult to get into.

It sounds like the author has done some extensive research for this.

MissPrismsMistake · 07/06/2025 17:54

Just downloaded a sample of the first book in the series. Hmm … Don’t think I could manage a whole volume.

Work of genius to re-visualise it set in Edinburgh.

MissConductUS · 07/06/2025 20:12

I finished Dept Q and can't wait for the next season.

I happened upon a new Netflix series called Black Doves, a spy thriller set in London, and the first two episodes have been great, if you're looking for your next binge.
