Dept. Q - Goode so good

Hot tip! Dept. Q on Netflix (since yesterday). It grabbed me by the throat in the first 5 minutes and never let go. I was 5 episodes in before I could bear to pause (at 1am). Now I need to try to make the remaining episodes last a bit longer 🙃

It’s a dark cold-case police drama set in Edinburgh. Apologies if there is already a thread about it but I couldn’t find one. Matthew Goode is excellent and so is everyone else in it. Can’t recommend it enough!

I used ‘bunker’ as it’s more generic, less specific - so less spoiler-y!

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/06/2025 13:23

Sorry. I didn't think that was a spoiler as I knew what it was.

I’ve never watched Harry Potter but the brother’s carer was also the batshit teacher in Happy Valley.

I don't remember the batshit teacher...

I don't remember the batshit teacher...

She was a Teaching Assistant, not a teacher, who was passing messages between Ryan and his Dad in prison.

Have now finished it and probably one of the top 5 detective series I have seen for a while .

There were lots of twists . I did guess some of it but not everything . Great acting and thought it tied things up very well in the last episode .
The characters were good and I hope that at least a few of the non detective ones make it to the next series . Fingers crossed that netflix give it the green light .

Didn't she steal her sisters identity to get a job in the school ? She was a Pharmacist (probably Batshit Pharmacist) but that wouldn't give her access to children ( child in question being Ryan)

I don't remember that detail but she wangled her way into the job definitely.

I don't remember any of this Confused I just remember that that Catherine's sister and her partner were secretly taking Ryan to see Tommy in prison.

I think that was series 3. In series 2 Shirley Henderson was 'in love' with Tommy and got Ryan to write him a letter and gave Ryan an expensive present from him. She was the sort of nutter that gets involved with violent criminals in prison but has no real life.

I watched it entirely over Monday evening (until 1am) and then had nothing on Tuesday so finished it then! Can’t wait for the next series.

As it was raining and still had not much to do I then watched Missing You which was also fab.

I absolutely love the Harlan Coben adaptations on Netflix! You have just reminded me that I was sure there might have been a couple of them that I haven’t finished, so have just gone and had a look. There are also two other new ones this year, as well as The Missing there’s also Caught and Just one Look. Have you watched any/all of them on Netflix? Having a look now and there’s currently 11 on there. I wish I was just discovering him now and had all 11 still to watch!

Ah, ok, I knew I remembered Shirley Henderson being in it, but I was trying to figure out how she fitted in with Ryan being secretly taken to visit Tommy! I didn't remember/ realise that they were two different seasons.
Sorry for the derail anyway, folks.

@Whatwaswrongwiththatusername I am also a big fan of the Harlan Coben adaptations, even the ones made in other languages.

Yes, the best HC adaptation is surely the wonderful French film, Anything For Her (Pour Elle). if you've never seen it, you're in for a treat!

Doesn't look like it. Seems it's accessible through Evil Amazon.

My God, this was good! Right to the end. Or many endings.

I need the next season right now.

And Bridget Jones’ friend.

awaynboilyurheid · 07/06/2025 08:57

Enjoying this only on episode 2, not a fan of Kelly McDonald she’s wooden in everything and spoiled line of duty for me but everyone else is really good especially the main character I don’t watch Downtown Abbey so havent seen him before.

xsquared · 07/06/2025 09:43

I binged it all in 2 days after thinking I was so restrained after the first episode!

Obviously, I won't say anything to spoil, but can't wait to discuss what we think of it all.

Interesting to see that most posters associate Shirley Henderson with Moaning Myrtle, because the first character I think of is Jude from Bridget Jones.

I'm not really a fan of Matthew Goode, but it's refreshing to see him play a very different character to the usual upper class type.

I find this interesting also as I always think of Shirley Henderson as Spud’s girlfriend in Trainspotting!

“What are you’s talking about?”
”Football. What are you’s talking about?”
”Shopping”

I also think it’s great that there are many of them set elsewhere, I think it adds a “little something”, iykwim? I think, maybe, if all set in the uk, they might’ve become a bit sort of samey? My only problem with the foreign language ones is that it means it can’t be my nighttime viewing to fall asleep to 😆 Speaking of which, have you ever used the dubbed versions of anything on Netflix? Oh dear lord, they’re so bad ! And I could never bring myself to even try that with any of the HC!

Now this is one I hadn’t heard of! I’ve had a look on the JustWatch app to see if it’s streaming anywhere atm, and unfortunately it isn’t, so that’s a real shame.

Just as an aside, if anyone hasn’t used the JustWatch app I would definitely recommend it.

I’ve just replied to this one as I was wondering that too, so had a look on JustWatch and it isn’t streaming on any of the apps I’ve got. But if you find it so please let me k ow because now I really want to watch it.

Prime Video? As can’t see it on there either, or through Amazon prime shopping site/app?
