Hello all
Have started a second thread in case the other one runs out

I thought given the overall series it was hers. I think it was close to call on the night.

One other thing that I thought she did better. Her single bedroom was adult friendly but a child would have liked it too. If I was the single person in Craig's children's bedroom, I'd have felt like a total plum.

imfae · 29/05/2025 21:07

I think John had the better design overall and some clever bits - loved the alcoves in the bedroom .
For Rita- I loved her bedrooms but not so much her living areas . When I saw both finished , I predicted John would win . I think they both did well .

Across the series Rita knocks the spots off. On tonight’s challenge I thought it was close. I thought her rooms were better “year round” cottage vibes, even though the kitchen was weak.

I could see what Sophie meant by “the most Portmeirion” but I think she was also right about those white walls - lovely in the hot sun, not so lovely in the 8 months of the year with regular grey days.

I would like to see a “where are they now” for previous contestants and winners. I wonder how many are now doing the job professionally and making a decent living. John would be taking quite a risk to give up a senior teacher job with pension for the uncertainty of self employed interior design. Perhaps he will split the two somehow.

ChompandaGrazia · 29/05/2025 21:18

Rita was robbed.

They didn’t notice that she had Portmerian pottery throughout.

I do think when they get all the old contestants back for the end they put some random people in there. I swear there were a couple of people I didn’t recognise.

CorrectionCentre · 29/05/2025 21:29

I'm surprised.
I really disliked John's living area. His kitchen was spot on. But there was too much white downstairs. I thought the white worked in the main bedroom but was cold in the living room.

I loved the wallpaper in Rita's dining area and if she'd taken some of those colours onto the kitchen cupboards etc. it would have really made a difference. The orange was too much for me and the chunky black chairs in the bedroom were horrible, but overall I much preferred her house.

Soukmyfalafel · 29/05/2025 21:31

I thought the right person won. I hate bright primary colours, but thought John's design was really good and would be quite happy to stay there. Its the best use of those sort of colours I've seen on the show so far. I recall last year people used primary colours pretty badly. Quite liked the stairs and bedrooms too.

I liked Rita's bedrooms, but overall, it didn't stand out for me in the living area. I'd be happy to stay there, but not really memorable for me, as it looks similar to other cottages. I think there was a bit more 'design' John's ideas too, and it fitted in well with the area better.

It's annoying because he really got through by the skin of his teeth in some rounds and Rita is pretty competent, but I think in the last couple of weeks he was a lot better and proved he could manage his time which was the issue. His wife looked relieved it was all over 😂

I wasn't really behind either designer, so I'm happy with the decision either way.

I hope in the next series they sort the budget and timing out. People didn't always finish this year, which was disappointing.

Soukmyfalafel · 29/05/2025 21:33

Oh and I think that orange was rough! It did not flow well with the rest of the house and the colours there.

Davros · 29/05/2025 21:35

Chrysanthemum5 · 29/05/2025 21:01

I hated how Rita kept all the wood chip even though it was quite damaged in places. I know it would have been tough to remove but the colours she used just highlighted how bad it was. And those horrible black chairs that were all cracked!

Plus the kitchen looked so cheap why didn't she replace the laminate worktops?

So I didn't love John's cottage but at least it felt finished

Although his gargoyle wallpaper would give children nightmares

I agree with all of this. I hated the oars and fishing basket bedsides and those pleather chairs were awful.

Mulledjuice · 29/05/2025 21:41

Reusing the leather tub armchairs in the bedroom with nothing on them was an in-Rita move.

Tbh before they breezed through the orange stairs I thought that was going to do for Rita, but the kitchen let her down I think. Personally preferred John's colour scheme (also more aligned with Michelle and Sophie's own colour palettes) but astonished that he won.

Although given Michelle's tendency to back her favourites (Monika was a particular example) I shouldn't be surprised.

Ellmau · 29/05/2025 21:47

I would have preferred to stay in John's so I thought he deserved the win.

There were definitely things I liked about Rita's, especially the lovely dining room wallpaper (gorgeous), but I hated the orange hall, the striped ceilings, the oars, and Rita's artwork (OK, that's a bit harsh, but it was just Not That Good - and done with a marker pen!). The curtains were bland.

A particularly cringy bit of rubbish from Alan in the middle.

Bruisername · 29/05/2025 21:53

I would prefer to stay in Rita’s. The living space was more relaxed and the master bed better. It was just the stairs to the second bed I didn’t like

I hate overfurnished holiday lets though and johns lounge felt overfurnished to me

and whilst his kitchen looked nicer it wouldn’t sway me on a holiday let

i do feel Michelle is the wrong judge for this show

Shadesofscarlett · 29/05/2025 22:15

i think both of them did disappointing final designs tbh. For the final, i think the standard was not great compared to what each produced previously. Didn't seem cohesive at all.

healthybychristmas · 29/05/2025 22:35

Rita drew a picture on the wall in five minutes and put a frame around it. She needed to lose just for that! There was no mention of that though. It's all very well her saying that she needs artwork for the walls but it's got to be good! I wouldn't be impressed by something someone had done in just a few minutes.

Soukmyfalafel · 29/05/2025 22:42

I do wonder sometimes if I am behind the times. Roisin did all the bold florals, bright warm colours and beaded frames last year and I've seen a lot of that about since. Some of the winners seemed to know what was going to become popular, so maybe there is something we don't know about John's style and the direction of things, although I'd be hard pushed to describe what his style is! Lots of wood work and textured surfaces I guess. Rita's style seemed to be more repuposing/industrial which was around a decade ago, if not longer. She'd be a good antique dealer.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 29/05/2025 23:03

I preferred Johns so glad he won. Didn’t like the colour of Rita’s bedroom, the oars or the fishing baskets. Plus I think she thought she was for the win.

John's collection for JL - like it a lot!

Bruisername · 29/05/2025 23:14

Not bad. I wouldn’t want it in my house because it’s not my style but I can see it in some of my friends houses. Will be interesting to see what he does next

i feel like this my go to his head!!

SwedishEdith · 29/05/2025 23:17

Pay walled. I think it got the essence of Port Meirion (so?) better than Rita.

Apologies, here is the archive link to avoid the paywall!

Maureenthemagicunicorn · 29/05/2025 23:50

I went into this episode thinking Rita would win and really liking her designs in previous weeks, but was surprised to find I preferred John's house. I thought it'd be a disaster based on the CGI preview but it looked much better in real life. The living room wouldn't be to everyone's taste but I thought it was really fun and coherent. I paused the picture to look at the details and all the accessories (curtain rails, convex mirror, standard lamp, small table, flower pot, bin, vintagey gallery wall) looked well-chosen and high quality. I loved the little bedroom. Agree that the brilliant white in the main bedroom would look cold in dull weather. I'd have chosen a slight off-white with a tiny hint of pink or yellow. Overall I'd really enjoy staying there.

Victoriawould24 · 30/05/2025 00:34

Agree with @Bruisername I think this will go to Johns head , that twinkle when he said it was life changing I’d be worried if I was his wife!
On paper he’s the sort of person I like and seems lovely but there’s something off about him I’m not sure what , maybe I just can’t forgive the hat 🥴.

Anyway I’m shocked to say I was really disappointed with Rita’s. That original utility black furniture and horrible pleather chairs were unforgivable in her bedroom and dominated a lot of space and I didn’t think there was anything wow about her design other than the orange for the wrong reasons.

I agree the houses were god awful before hand, less homely than the hostels from the first week and like some kind of facility run by social services- embarrassing for Portmerian.

Bryony didn’t seem to have much to say / do and why was it Craig showing the others around Rita’s.

I thought John did excel himself and showed he’d learnt which aways goes down well with these show’s judges- they love a journey.
I really loved his turquoise windows and yellow wallpaper if anyone can find it.

His JL collection seems a lot more limited than forgotten her names collection for La Redoute last year- just a few pieces but I like them so fair play.

.

Apple2Orange · 30/05/2025 05:59

They didn't get a good foundation to work with on tight budget/timescale for a final, it was more cheap student flat than a holiday home.

I was surprised that I preferred Johns cottage overall to Rita's given it looked hideous on the CGI plan. However it wasn't her best week the kitchen was still drab, hated the shiny orange hallway and her felt pen artwork looked crap so I can see why John won.

I was sure early on would be a Craig v Rita final, John had some interesting ideas but wasn't great at time management to execute them fully nor the finer style details.

Loved Michelle's silky cape dress, noticed one past contestant looked like an ex had chopped his suit jacket arms off 😂

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2025 07:22

John did very well last night and his cottage was better but I still feel very dissatisfied as he should have been booted out of the show weeks ago. Wonder what his range at JL will end up focussing on. Confused

PuppyMonkey · 30/05/2025 07:23

Oh missed the Telegraph link, will have a look.

Doingmybest12 · 30/05/2025 07:24

I expected to like Rita's from the brief but it just looked messy to me, not coherent. So many bits I didn't like about hers in the end. The kitchen looked too plain given the rest of the cottage. I was surprised I liked John's and thought his was definitely a better over all scheme. I wonder how convincing the stickers in the kitchen were in real life.
