Thanks for the new thread, checking in!

Chrysanthemum5 · 14/05/2025 21:11

It will feel like a long wait since it's over a week until the next episode

I think both shops were huge improvements but the drab curtains were an obvious mistake and the wooden hands were awful. For the paper shop I felt it just seemed really dark and the stencil on the table and floor would not stand the test of time

Thanks!

ChompandaGrazia · 14/05/2025 21:31

Checking in for next week.

FagsMagsandBags · 14/05/2025 21:47

Ready for next week which I now realise will be a longer wait. I think it'll be worth it and I have high hopes of Rita going all out and nailing it.

FagsMagsandBags · 14/05/2025 21:47

And yes, thank you @Chrysanthemum5

Soukmyfalafel · 14/05/2025 22:31

What is it next week? My perimenopausal brain can't remember the task.

Bruisername · 14/05/2025 22:36

Edinburgh fringe

i didn’t think it looked great tbh

Chrysanthemum5 · 14/05/2025 22:39

So must have been filmed last August then if it's the Fringe

I'd quite like to follow Bryony on Insta, since she was robbed - anyone found her?

NeedWineNow · 15/05/2025 08:31

Morning, checking in for next week!

Mulledjuice · 15/05/2025 13:47

Briony's twickenham box looks miles better in her insta pics than on TV.

Have just watched this episode. My thoughts:

  • how in Om’s name is John still in it? He was better this week but still didn’t finish his plans in the time allocated
  • The paper shop was colourful and some parts were good but it was also very busy and felt a bit bitty. Maybe that was just the way they reviewed it
  • I thought criticising the girls for having plain curtains was harsh. It was much more subtle but did a better job of displaying the merchandise and skills of the owners
  • Whilst less is more in the window the paper shop had a huge bay window and just three small plates of origami. The idea was great but that window felt underused compared to the girls
  • I wasn’t keen on the “rough blue paint”. The colour was fine but there were so many colours and differing styles in the shop I was looking at the decor rather than the merchandise
  • I would have said the girls met the brief better in terms of a good merchandising design

I wonder how different it would be if I’d actually walked into the shops.

I predicted Rita/Craig for the final and I still think it will be them. John is overdue to go.

I suspect with the prize being “stuff designer” Craig is being lined up as favourite on account of his years of designing tat Giftware. I don’t see Rita designing twee animal dust catchers with great enthusiasm.

TheShiningHostess · 15/05/2025 19:09

Surely whatever Rita painted the chrome rails with was just going to flake off as soon as any hangers were moved along it? It would look shit after about half an hour.

AndWhoShallISayIsCalling · 15/05/2025 19:29

Wrong thread!

LadyAddle · 15/05/2025 23:36

Can anyone remember the name of a programme a bit like Interior Design Masters, but it was pure design? They had to create an artefact of some sort, had access to 3D copiers, etc. I think there was just one series but it was interesting.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 16/05/2025 07:00

I wish they had a proper budget and slightly less time pressure. Which I know would make the programme more expensive.

The producers on these shows seem to think it increases the tension seeing last minute scrambling around (sewing bee is a prime example) but you don’t want these programmes for the adrenaline filled excitement. I want to see good design executed well.

I thought that, too. Seemed like a waste of time in proportion to what it did for the overall effect. Does any shopper really pay attention to the rails?

Rita and Bryony could have spent that time thinking up other, more noticeable, design elements.

Bruisername · 16/05/2025 13:17

I can’t get past the curtain - it was cheap and had the packet folds in. If it had been velvet or a striking design. There wasn’t any oomph in the room

its a shame though as I would have preferred John to go

FagsMagsandBags · 16/05/2025 14:57

I was thinking about the shops today and wondered if they were still going strong. They are.The Paper Place have changed the window since the show and they have some stuff about the show on their Insta page. Their window display is bigger and looks lovely. Photos from inside show that it looks like they've kept the design but gone back a little on it which was not a bad idea because I really liked what they did with it but it was too busy for me

Niche has still has the two more vintage mannequins in the window looking good and appear from the photos I've seen to have kept the interior they were given and worked their own smaller details. The shop looks great.

I would say that in the period since the shops were done Niche was more successful. The BRAND and what Mary and Michelle were asking them to upgrade was just not right for the shop. Also in an interview the woman owner said that they didn't want as were The Paper Place. Niche said: when we met the two girl designers we knew we were in good hands. The vibes were good and all I said was no to tropical wallpaper and no flying parrots.

Now, I wouldn't say that no tropical wallpaper and flying parrots says stay neutral but they were so pleased with the end result that I think Rita and Byrony were going with what she wanted and also each adding a bit of themselves, huge billard ball table legs - I got a bit obsessed with those. Loved 'em.

In the end I'd say it would have been almost impossible to choose who did the best job between both teams and I'd happily have said, okay I get The Paper Place even though I think it's even slightly more obvious than Niche. But can we acknowledge that Bryony did nothing wrong, Keep everyone on the sofa and send John home for fucking up timing. Again. Thanks! I know once The Paper Place won he was safe but he was the least deserving of it and it I feel sorry for him because it's irked a lot of people and it's not his fault that the show fucked up.

NeedWineNow · 16/05/2025 15:43

Interesting to read everyone’s thoughts. I think most of us agree that Briony was robbed and John scraped through on Craig’s coattails.

DH and I think a fairer way of deciding who was to go would have been for the judges to consider each part of the shop in isolation, ie Rita’s front of shop, Briony the rear and changing rooms and the same with the paper shop. Taking into account the judges comments that would have meant John and Briony on the sofa, and hopefully Briony saved.

Also interesting to see Niche commenting on one of Briony’s IG posts. They say they and their customers love the design, and that the curtains look great and really showcase the clothes, so what do any of us know!

Bruisername · 16/05/2025 15:55

I think briony did better than Rita tbh

JamMakingWannaBe · 16/05/2025 20:14

Both owners loved the makeover Rye News
