Robson Green and Jason Watkins go toe-to-toe in The Game trailer
A retired detective believes he's found a twisted stalker – but is he just deluding himself?

It was called catch you later and changed to the game

Set to debut on 5, the psychological drama will air its first episode on Monday 12 May at 9pm, with the remaining episodes set to follow that same week (via Radio Times (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/jason-watkins-robson-green-game-air-date-newsupdate/)).

Jason Watkins and Robson Green star in the suspenseful trailer for upcoming 5 drama The Game (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/jason-watkins-robson-green-game-air-date-newsupdate/), which finds a former
detective locked in psychological warfare with a man he believes to be a notorious stalker.

Huw Miller (Watkins) retired from the police force with one major career regret: failing to catch the so-called Ripton Stalker, who would torment his victims before ultimately murdering them.

When an enigmatic stranger named Patrick Harbottle (Green) moves in next door, Huw starts to think that the criminal who eluded him for so many years might now be operating right under his nose.

The synopsis reads: "As Huw attempts to settle into retirement, the case is never far from his mind – and when new neighbour Patrick Harbottle (Green) moves in and utters the chilling phrase 'catch you later' – the sign-off the stalker used to taunt Huw during the investigation –

Huw is determined he’s finally got his man.
"What follows is a high stakes game of psychological chess between the two neighbours as Huw’s world begins to crumble around him.

"Unable to bear the guilt of the stalker taking another victim under his nose, Huw risks everything to unearth the truth.

But has he set his sights on the right man, or is his obsession pushing him ever closer to the brink?"

My issue with it is that neither Huw nor Patrick are very likeable. I suppose we’re meant to be rooting for Huw but what he did to Ruth was cruel.

Clawdy · 14/05/2025 09:25

Yes, he certainly should not have done that, and she was so pleased to see him at the start. He put her in terrible danger too, by the looks of it.

martinisforeveryone · 14/05/2025 09:26

Using Ruth like that was not only cruel but totally unethical. I know he's no longer on the job, but his own morality should have guided him. It's probably meant to show us how much over the edge he's tipped.

I like Jason as an actor and also Sunetra ever since she was Nish in the original Brookside.

Robson I'm not so keen on, as yes, I read the gossip about his love life and he also comes across as quite a don't you know who I am luvvy type, although he does a series of short break holiday escapes in the north, always with a celebrity friend, and he's not so bad on that.

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2025 09:37

The houses are an odd shape and design! Kind of interlinked.
Surely he is aware of the key under the gnome , but he knows that Huw can access it so not that bothered about it as he knows his on to him and wants to catch him out.
I also get ‘ don’t you know who I am ? ‘ vibes from RG , I read once that he fell out with his co star in ‘ soldier soldier ‘ , but what you read isn’t always reliable I guess!

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2025 09:45

I was surprised that he accepted a drink from him. I know he was drunk , but he should have thought about it. Put himself in danger too.
Im beginning to think that he wasn’t that great policeman when he was one tbh .. although not catching this guy probably did screw him up a lot tbf.

'Robson I'm not so keen on, as yes, I read the gossip about his love life and he also comes across as quite a don't you know who I am luvvy type'

I hate his accent irl, yes his original geordie will become watered down over the years but he's like Denise Welsh and Sarah Lancashire, their regional Northern accents seem to be replaced by impressions of the Queen Mother all clipped as if they're reading the news from the 1950s.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/05/2025 10:00

So do we take it that Patrick is the killer as he’s drugged him

or that he’s so drunk and the whiskey finished him off and isn’t drugged

we still have 2 to go

I’m loving this

I did wonder if maybe the stalker was a friend of Patrick’s and he said I’ve met the policeman/telling him stuff so Patrick is not guilty

but just seen ending of last nights so …….

surely if him ruth would have recognised him ?

Patrick wore a mask and probably disguised his voice and it was 3 years ago, so maybe that’s why Ruth just didn’t realize it was him (He also may have blindfolded her too , but that is a pure guess. ) She didn’t seem scared of him at all, but it’s so hard to tell if you would have a ‘sixth sense ‘ of being that close to your old attacker if you didn’t or couldn’t see his face.
Huw was wrong to do this to her though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/05/2025 12:11

He was totally wrong to do it to her

No wonder everybody is wary of Huw , he's just as creepy and he was a lousy copper if this is how he was at work .

I'm not sure if Robson is the stalker, it seems a bit obvious .

The ballerina in the doll's house was tiny , miniature, how could it have been the one by the bedside table , or have I got it wrong .

I'm enjoying this , but a lot of overacting [Ruth crying so loud in the pub made me laugh] .

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2025 14:08

Who was he baby sitting for , the neighbour ?

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/05/2025 14:24

It does seem too obvious it’s him but there was another cheesy drama a while back and seeing a man in the car park of a shop and knowing he was someone

and it was

so maybe Patrick is

thi we have 2hrs more so more plots

Edited

Isn't the point that the dolls house room is a replica of Ruth's room? After all, it's quite unusual to have a ballerina statuette on a bedside table, and the pose was an exact copy.

Nominative · 14/05/2025 16:17

I'm quite enjoying this, but it does irritate me when Huw keeps dashing off doing utterly stupid things like going into Patrick's house and taking poor Ruth to visit him. I'm also dubious that it really justifies four episodes, I suspect they could tell the story more effectively in three or even two.

Thanks , I must've had my 'What's Going on' hat on 😅
