Been a 2year wait

Season 2 will follow Dr James Ford, played by Those About to Die (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/those-about-to-die-review/)'s Tom Hughes.

He finds himself under investigation after getting himself "caught between an anxious new mother’s postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a psychotic patient" in a North Yorkshire hospital, according to the show's synopsis.

The synopsis also ask
s: "Is Dr Ford a doctor with a God complex, or a victim himself?"

This season of the ITV drama will welcome a near-completely new cast, (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/malpractice-season-2-itv-cast-confirmed-newsupdate/) including Selin Hizli (Am I Being Unreasonable?) and Zoë Telford (Red Eye).

Other new additions to the ensemble are Hannah McClean (Blue Lights) and Seraphina Beh (Top Boy) amongst a whole host of new faces.

However, some fan favourites are set to return, with Norma Callahan (Helen Behan) and George Adjei (Jordan Kouamé) confirmed to reprise their roles as part of the Medical Investigation Unit for another season.

The announcement came from ITV, who said of the new series ahead of its release: "As George and Norma uncover a hospital seemingly at war with itself, to what lengths will James go to preserve his position?

"Can the MIU uncover the truth of what happened despite fierce opposition from all sides?"

Just watched the first episode - think this is going to be good! The first series was excellent.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 06:47

I remember the first series got really far fetched towards the end so I am hoping this one restrains itself. There are already signs!

It was an excellent (and very troubling) starting episode though. As in the first series it is hard to see how the main guy has done anything wrong - or avoidable anyone, apart form clearly not being where he should have been overnight.

My guess is he is having an affair with his consultant... (McMillan?)

The investigating team don't seem to be probing Hernandez or McMillan's actions much and I'm not sure why he didn't highlight how they behaved.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 06:53

One thing I am not clear on... who/what role is Hernadez? The Guardian review asserts she is Rosie's GP but she can't be. She was in a hospital setting and psychs don't go straight to a GP appointment. Why was Rosie being seen in the first place? It seemed like a routine appointment , at first focusing on post partum pain. That bit didn't make sense.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 06:57

In fact, Lucy Mangan can be a really inattentive viewer - or I am - the house that he went in at the end wasn't the same house he was in overnight was it? That didn't look like his sister's house. He was receiving texts form whoever he stayed with overnight. And wherever he was overnight even DH noticed wasn't somewhere he often was as he didn't know how long the journey was and needed satnav.

I think it was her 6/8w check up

I thought that, but unless much has changed since I had a baby 30+ years ago, why would that be in the hospital Obstetrics department? I saw my GP at that point after both my births, even though the first one was an emergency c-section.

Nitpicking aside, though, I really enjoyed this. Will be watching tonight! (Can't binge as staying with elderly mum who doesn't have a smart TV. I'm not known for my patience but will have to contain myself.)

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 07:31

Yes, my check up was with a HCP as far as I remember, possibly GP but definitley not in a hospital. Unless I am misremembering.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 07:32

He'll be made to release his phone at some point, I bet. Those texts will be unearthed.

Clawdy · 05/05/2025 08:19

Enjoying it so far. Remember the doctor as Prince Albert!

Yes that was all fantasy stuff. No on call pysche would be summoned to a routine post natal appointment, the patient wasn't even admitting to any mental health issues! I assume because it was a hospital appointment that the Dr was an obstetrician.

butterpuffed · 05/05/2025 08:55

So James lied , saying he was only 30 minutes away from the hospital when he was woken up in the night and the investigators now know . I guess he's having an affair , expect we'll find out more.

So tempted to binge as I thought it was weekly but it's on tonight and tomorrow , wooo 😀

PrincessScarlett · 05/05/2025 09:24

I remember one of my post birth check ups being with a midwife based at my local hospital. This was 15 years ago. Initial visit was HV in home but then I had one at hospital as that is where my midwife team was based.

I think all Dr Ford is guilty of is not being within 30 minutes of hospital when on call. Dr Hernandez on the other hand didn't explain the importance of the medication properly after Dr Ford told her to. There was also that woman hanging around her property at the end saying she wouldn't get away with it this time implying she's made mistakes before with patients.

daffodilandtulip · 05/05/2025 09:26

I have a past life in working in mental health services and I thought it was brilliant. Obv some odd bits, but the chaos and the unpredictably and the blame culture - spot on.

Thanks @butterpuffed I thought it was weekly too! I was going to say I'd have missed it but I've seen the whole series is on catch up anyway.

I think it was supposed to be a routine appointment but the husband kept saying that there was something else wrong. Rosie didn't want to admit to anything but the husband was quite pushy.

Yes, she is definitely an obstetrician. That was said later in the programme so quite why Lucy Mangan thought she was a GP is beyond me.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 05/05/2025 10:51

Why are all the main characters so unlikeable? Dr Hernandez is just cold and nasty. Dr. Ford is really naive, too.

It's not often that I find dramas hard to watch due to how unlikeable some of the characters are.

PrincessScarlett · 05/05/2025 10:58

I can't help being suspicious of Dr Hernandez as she was the weird friend in Am I Being Unreasonable.

purpleme12 · 05/05/2025 11:03

I can't match all the names people are mentioning up to the characters!

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 11:09

Dr Ford (James) is the main guy.

His 'boss' is, I think , McMillan and is called Kate.

Rosie is the woman who took her own life

I think the junior doctor is called Gabriella. The one who was panicking and called him back.

Dr Hernandez is the obstetrician who seems not to like Dr Ford very much - but I don't think there is history. She was just very angry about the turn of events and deflecting maybe.

The investigators are George and Norma, of all names! Last series I was annoyed and the concealment of that actor's Irish accent since it served no purpose otehr than perhaps to stop audiences speculating a connection with Niamh Algar's character.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 11:13

Oh, and Mr Mansoor kept being mentioned who is obviously the senior consultant of either obs or psych. RT tells me that's played by Ace Bhatti so I am looking forward to that and am assuming sly old fox.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 11:15

Not Gabrielle : Bernadette!

If Ace is playing him, you know he'll be a baddie!

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2025 11:19

Yup!

Also, the woman at the end was in Hollyoaks years and years ago and it's really bugging me who she was.

BingoBling · 05/05/2025 11:20

Watching this. Enjoyable yet stressful to watch.

All Dr Fords colleagues seem to dislike him!

placemats · 05/05/2025 11:23

It's certainly a harrowing watch. However it's good. When this is finished, I'll watch the first series.
