Join DI Humphrey Goodman as we return to Shipton Abbott for a brand-new series on BBC

The team faces a host of baffling cases in the upcoming series, including

a body discovered in a river on the county border,

a perplexing chocolate box poisoning, a long-standing farming feud

and a spiking incident at sea.

Away from the police station, Martha and Humphrey must overcome unexpected hurdles as foster parents, while the reappearance of Martha’s old flame Archie presents an unexpected challenge.

I hope that the whodunnits don't become an afterthought to make more room for family/fostering stuff!

Agreed . We're watching for murder solving , not to see newly fostered child paint on the walls !

Bruisername · 14/04/2025 10:22

Yes I don’t really care about Martha or her mum or the foster kid or the restaurant or Archie etc etc

Davros · 14/04/2025 11:42

@Bruisername well said 👏

Lunde · 14/04/2025 11:45

Are we actually going to solve the mystery of who is Zoe's dad?

Bruisername · 14/04/2025 11:50

I thought they had - he died before she was born? I wasn’t interested enough to remember!

Bartg · 14/04/2025 11:50

I do find the Archie storyline really difficult to care about. I like Esther’s character a lot and I like her being strong and independent . Not sure why she needs Archie at this point

Obvnotthegolden · 14/04/2025 11:51

Anyone else not stand Humphrey? I love everything else, the setting, the other police people, the stories, but find Humphrey so annoying!

purpleme12 · 14/04/2025 12:08

Yes Zoe's dad died

BishyBarnyBee · 14/04/2025 12:22

I'm liking the fostering storyline but finding the Archie romance totally unconvincing. Also hating the mixed messages from Esther. Does she have an unresolved trauma or something? She's just very rude most of the time but then we're supposed to believe she likes him really - I hate all that game playing "she loves him really" stuff.

And I think if you're looking for convincing murders and original plotlines, the Paradise series are possibly not for you. We enjoy it for its formulaic cheesiness - and the complete lack of gratuitous violence against women. If you're going to quibble about a far-fetched murder plot, you're probably watching the wrong detective series!

Exactly!

Yes Zoe's dad died

Wasn't it on the way to the hospital so he never met her?

at this point, he seems to have fallen rather hard for her, perhaps to his own surprise, and she’s decided to enjoy it - after I assume a long period alone since Zoe’s dad died. I quite like the dynamic at the moment.

I’m liking Margo more this series, and Kelby is much improved by having got over his ridiculous crush on the Chief Super.

saveforthat · 14/04/2025 15:08

I think the writers have tried to recreate Doc Martin. Beautiful Devon/Cornwall scenery, socially awkward main character, PC who is a bit dim, quirky receptionist woman.

MeinKraft · 14/04/2025 15:35

The best episodes are the ones where there’s a ghostly/supernatural element. It’s something Beyond Paradise does really well, they should lean into it more.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/04/2025 21:02

Yes I prefer the mystery’s rather then murders

@BishyBarnyBee I agree with what you say apart from the fostering. I luvs a bit of cheese 🧀

Edited

She always backs off/changes the subject at any discussion of Zoe's dad

  • is he dead and it was a scandal/mystery?
  • Is he not dead and she's lying for some reason?
Lunde · 14/04/2025 23:43

Am I imagining it or did I spot Midsomer Murders Jones as one of the overcompetitive dads on the trailer for this week's episode?

He was on Saint Marie a few years ago

purpleme12 · 15/04/2025 00:08

I really don't think there's any conspiracy about Zoe's dad. I think he really is dead like they said

Bruisername · 15/04/2025 07:16

There was a whole episode where she told Zoe all about it. I don’t think there’s anything there

Yes, as someone said he died on his way to the hospital when Zoe was born. Perfectly understandable Esther wouldn’t want to discuss that while having a dalliance (as it was at that point) with Archie.

I found the PC in Doc Martin very funny; this one seems to be a stereo type and not funny though the actor was great in Derry Girls. Likewise Catherine Parkinson was great in Doc Martin. We still regularly watch and enjoy the repeats.

I agree DM is a far superior show but BP an OK easy watch.

There was something about a tattoo.

I think Zoe's dad died before knowing her but she doesn't know that.

Esther told her he used to sing to her.

The tattoo represented the song.

I think Esther then got the same tattoo rather than tell Zoe the truth.

She could surely easily find out though couldn't she?
