The adaptation of Harlan Coben's novel is coming to Netflix on New Year's Day.

I've recently read the book so I'm looking forward to the series.

@TimeForATerf in the novel Aqua is viewed as a man by the other characters and referred to as 'he'. In the Netflix version they refer to the character as 'she'

But he’s still a man in stereotypical women’s clothing yes? So a cross dressing man.

MissBattleaxe · 06/01/2025 21:59

I usually love a Harlen Coben adaptation but this just left me with a big cartoon question mark over my head

Elle771 · 07/01/2025 14:52

Not my favourite adaptation so was glad it was only 5 eps! Annoying how she welcomes her ex back with absolutely no decent explanation for why he left!!!!

Just starting The Five on Now TV now following ppl recommendations

KateReddy · 07/01/2025 18:09

Can’t wait to be well enough to get back to work after watching that.
The Acqua character storyline was about 5 steps too far from any sense of reality for me.

What a load of rubbish ! Think I only stuck with it as the episodes were so short. With the exception of the main actress and Steve Pemberton the acting was terrible especially Aqua, Josh and Stagger. Josh and Stagger were like planks of wood.

Josh is June’s husband in The Handmaids Tale. He was so much better in that than he is now.

IjustbelieveinMe · 07/01/2025 19:14

Erm I don't think it is the handmaid Junes husband lol

Meredusoleil · 07/01/2025 19:19

The Josh actor just reminded me of a young Lionel Richie!

Not according to IMDB

O-T Fagbenle (June's husband in the Handmaid's Tale) is in The Five. Not Missing You

Yes of course I got them mixed up.

BuntyBeaufort · 07/01/2025 21:05

What a load of utter tosh!
Predictable, hackneyed, poorly written and acted by almost everyone.
I only stuck with it as I had an Everest-sized mountain of ironing to plough through, and the teeth-gritting and eye-rolling distracted from the tedium.
The icing on the cake was a non-active British police officer whipping out a gun, shooting someone and just walking away.

1AngelicFruitCake · 07/01/2025 21:22

I enjoyed it! 😀 I'm grateful for something new to watch so my standards are low!
Hated the trans character being called Aqua, it grated on me everytime they said it.
The detective and Aqua and Josh all being friends just didn't ring true, couldn't see Josh and Aqua as housemates.
Steve Pemberton is so scary!

AnnunciataM · 07/01/2025 23:25

Aqua was a ridiculous character and the actor was terrible - all that pouting and posing as if that's how most women actually are 🙄 Also, Aqua assaulted poor Brendan and stole his phone yet faced no repercussions at all and was treated like some sort of delicate flower by everyone else. Surely you'd at least face charges for that?

And the PI friend was equally annoying. I couldn't figure out why Kat would be friends with either of them in the first place!

Steve Pemberton was the best thing about it, though his henchmen weren't very bright. One of them looked like he'd just lost a Daniel Radcliffe lookalike contest. And eaten the winner!

ifeelsobad · 07/01/2025 23:31

It was horrendous I watched it in 1.25 speed and forwarded most of it. Horrendous acting all round. A total embarrassment.

JMAngel1 · 08/01/2025 15:15

Only just started this but why oh why is Richard Armitage always in these? I’ve no clue yet but he’s bound to turn out to be a baddie. He’s too typecast. Are there no other actors? Ditto Mark Warren.

Porcelainpig · 08/01/2025 16:04

Watched ep 1. Not sure about this. I think Harlan Corben (?) TV series are a bit mediocre, but watchable when there isnt much else. I liked Fool Me Once, but thought The Stranger was a bit shit. I really don't like that the people in these series live in massive mansions when they are regular people. I struggle to take it seriously as it just feels off. The dialogue and acting is always a bit hmmmm too, but it feels almost intentional.

I'm guessing in this one it is trying to make you think Josh killed the Dad, but it's actually one of her mates instead.

AnnunciataM · 08/01/2025 17:06

They are all entertaining enough but pretty forgettable. The most ridiculous was the one where a woman got murdered because she found out a coach had made off with the proceeds of the local kids football club. Clearly something lost in translation!

Porcelainpig · 08/01/2025 17:41

I don't get why so many good actors and well known celebs queue up to be in these. I thought Fool Me Once was OK, but The Stranger was utterly bonkers. Quite a lot of people slate these adaptions, so I'm surprised they keep coming.

I'm not sure whether to carry on with this one. I like the main character, she's great in Slow Horses, but I doubt this series will be anywhere bear as good. Is it worth it?

No, in all honesty it's shite. If you haven't already invested any time in watching it, give it a miss.

tennissquare · 08/01/2025 18:05

@Porcelainpig , Fool me once was the 6th most watched show on Netflix ever (98 million views) when it had been available for 90 days (April 2023),

The actors must be paid ££££ to take a part.

This was definitely my least favourite, Safe and The Stranger top my list.

witchycat2 · 08/01/2025 18:08

It's currently number 1 globally on Netflix so that will be why they keep making them!

They certainly have a big budget in terms of the homes they use for filming and the actors. I guess the books were really successful so money must be thrown at it? I just find the dialogue a bit unnatural, so maybe that's the issue.

I think I keep watching them hoping they will get it right , the five was excellent and the woods is too but the ones that are getting relocated to the UK don't really work . I've read a few of the ones that are adapted and the location change ruins the story . I enjoyed the stranger but I couldn't take stay close too seriously.

Can anyone explain why Lisa Faulkners brother was interviewed by Kat and said he had spoken to her the day before, all was fine and Brendon was just being a brat?
