The adaptation of Harlan Coben's novel is coming to Netflix on New Year's Day.

I've recently read the book so I'm looking forward to the series.

Pleased it's not just me that was underwhelmed by it.

There's always a bit of suspension of disbelief needed for the HC adaptations, but they've usually been very watchable, until this one.

Kat was totally unbelievable as a police officer, as she just seemed to charge about doing whatever she wanted with zero accountability. The dialogue was as clunky as hell and the characters were really flat.

Definitely the worst of the HC adaptations so far.

shewillbefinestopworrying · 04/01/2025 21:38

Absolute garbage. Dreadful acting, ridiculous storyline and don’t get me started on the ending..

countdowntonap · 04/01/2025 21:40

Let’s be honest. It was shit. The Colleen Hoover of TV

jay55 · 04/01/2025 23:30

Load of build up to utter bollocks.

MalteserGeezee · 04/01/2025 23:50

Total shite.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 04/01/2025 23:58

Entertaining shite though, what can you expect from these Harlen Coban adaptations? Just go with it and don't try to apply any logic or common sense.

The weakest of all the Harlan Coben adaptations so far IMO. The lead actress wasn’t bad but most of the rest were poor and my god her PI friend was beyond irritating! None of the characters were particularly likeable so it was hard to really care about them. Also, did we really need so many characters?

The two storylines were just meh and the script was very poor. Thankfully they didn’t drag it out across 6/8/10 episodes as Netflix often do, so at least it wasn’t as big a waste of my time as it could have been.

Her PI friend was in Eastenders and although very beautiful, was incredibly wooden!
She did get a bit better as she grew into the role though.

@witchycat2
I really liked it. But I am interested if the book is as diverse, I thought having so many people of colour in leading roles was great and I wonder if that is the case in the book. Also a trans person in it, playing a role that didn't specifically require a trans person, or were they trans in the novel?

I actually thought it was the best of the Harbin Corbins.

Italiangreyhound · 05/01/2025 03:06

My preference so far...

Missing You, Safe, and The Stranger - all very good

The Woods and Stay Close pretty crap
Fool Me Once very crap

Not seen Hold Tight yet, The Innocent, or Gone for Good yet.

smoothblanket · 05/01/2025 08:51

I quite enjoyed it while I was watching it, but overall I was disappointed and felt it was the worst of all of them. The last episode was disappointing. It was obvious from the start who had killed her dad, although not why. The book ending in the spoiler above would have been better.

Wow. Missing You is by far the worst of the HC adaptations. The best one by far is "Five". It's not on Netflix but on Sky.

In the novel Aqua is a man who cross dresses- the novel describes them as a 'transvestite'. The character is referred to as 'he'. So Netflix changed this and made the character a trans woman.

As for the diverse characters, I can't remember there being many descriptions on what the characters actually looked like, so I suppose it's up to interpretation.

The best HC adaptation (although I think it may have been written by him for tv rather than adapted from one of his books?) in my opinion was actually on Sky, before the Netflix ones. It was called The Five and was absolutely brilliant.

This!! "The Five" is definitely the best HC adaptation out there. It's the only one with a plausible script and brilliant acting throughout.

FiftynFooked · 05/01/2025 09:07

Implausible guff.

I really need to get round to these series'

Is there a best one to get started on?

The Five is my ultimate favourite!

The stranger, Safe and stay close great too.

IjustbelieveinMe · 05/01/2025 09:59

Thought this was an absolute bag of shite. Even worse than that Cate Blanchett shite on Apple

IjustbelieveinMe · 05/01/2025 10:08

Was more curious about the lead actresses co worker who was having the affair with the young lad and what her skincare regime was as her face and makeup looked fabulous.

The Five is the best no question. It's on Sky not Netflix though.

I also liked Gone for Good and Safe. The rest are entertaining but super implausible.

Absolutely HATED the latest Missing You. It's total garbage from beginning to end and can be skipped.

PickleBranst · 05/01/2025 11:30

This was really poor. A load of unbelievable bollocks in fact.

Thank you, very helpful.

FastFood · 05/01/2025 12:59

That was the worst ever for me. I always found these series quite bad but enjoyable, but not this one. Just painful.

DragonFly98 · 05/01/2025 13:22

There was an in joke about that .

witchycat2 · 05/01/2025 17:16

I'm watching The Five after recommendations on this thread. It's very good.

Loved The Five. It's the only one of HC's adaptations that makes any sense from beginning to end and the acting is great from everyone.
