I'm in tears. Maybe I'm just emotional but can't believe how much the show means to me

And the ending... tidy!

Yes I watched them all. The Welsh contingent are Smithy's best mates in laws. He's been with his gf long enough to plan a wedding and he lives in Essex so it's a hell of a reach imo.

Stacey is his best mate’s wife, Nessa is the mother of his child, and Bryn is his friend. Pam is the only one that might be a reach really.

whynotwhatknot · 26/12/2024 23:02

it was always a love hate will they wont they-then they did

nothing more to be said as a storyline

Justhere65 · 26/12/2024 23:05

I’m Welsh and love Barry … I laughed and sobbed all the way through. Perfect ending.

The people Smithys son lived with for nearly 16 years. Gwen babysat Neil for every conceivable occasion in series three. They organised and catered his sons Christening. Smithy was there every second Friday to see his son at Uncle Bryns.

Randoms... 🤣🤣🤣

Lockeddownagain · 26/12/2024 23:23

Whe it was on I always fancied the guy playing dirtbox.
When he came on the screen last night I was reminded of that feeling he was still totaly handsome 🤣

Ah, a world without financial constraint or mobile phones. You can walk out of a fifty grand wedding without apologising to anyone and soon be whooping in a bus with randoms from Wales who have absolutely no connection to you. My eyes rolled out of my head. Couple of funny gags, mind.

Ahh you’re clearly so much cooler than all of us 👏🏻

I was reminded how many the Smithy crew were with him in "The History Boys".

But that’s life. Kids generally have little influence over how things pan out. It’s why being an adult is better.

Riiight Hmm

Budgie for me. I've always found Russell Tovey really attractive.

The kids weren’t in it because they’re not needed. There are already plenty of characters to keep involved and it’s too late for the audience to invest in new ones. You’d need to find three child actors with good comic timing and a storyline for them worth taking up time. More people would complain about them popping up and it spoiling the feel of the show than would want them. I’ve seen no other comment on any social media about their absence, as opposed to 5000 people asking where Deano was.

I’d have liked at the most one scene with them in with Pam being her very best grandmother self but it would have been about Pam.

MrsToothyBitch · 27/12/2024 08:30

We really enjoyed it here. Not the strongest entry in the G&S series but I preferred it to the last special- which I also enjoyed.

I was very convinced by the Sonia & Smithy long engagement. They only got engaged late 2019 so they probably couldn't do much planning even for 2020 and half of 2021. She's also quite picky and it wouldn't be cheap- she'd have been happy to hang on a year and get what she wanted. I can imagine if venues were still getting through their rebookings and people who got engaged in 2021 and 2022 and scrabbled hard for dates summer 2022 into 2023, Sonia would book 2024 to get her preferred weekend at her preferred venue. It also won't have been cheap and Smithy had to earn it all!

yorktown · 27/12/2024 09:22

SabreIsMyFave · 26/12/2024 22:37

I agree with you @Parkrunmum10 But to be fair, I thought what @yorktown said originally. Why was he with her so long?! But yeah as you say, 5 years isn't that long really, when you take into account COVID. The 2 years of Covid seemed like a blur in many ways, like we were all frozen in time.

On reflection I've decided I am ok with it.
In my head, the Gavin and Stacey families get together every weekend and see each other as much as we "see" them but in reality of course they don't (I am aware they don't exist, I really am!).
And if Sonia always had those pesky sore throats, then she really never joined them for gatherings anyway.
And I can imagine Mick/Gavin/Pam saying "are you sure about this?" lightly to Smithy, him saying "yes" and then them not mentioning it again for a year or two.

And I've have been disappointed if there wasn't a big wedding objection/coach chase across the country in any case!

MyOtherProfile · 27/12/2024 10:19

Some people are engaged for years. It happens on here. You see people starting a post with how they've been with their fiancé for 8 years and have two kids etc.

I also think they were engaged all that time without having a wedding because they both knew they didn't really fit together.

And Pam and Mick have openly declared theu love him like a son so that's not a reach either

beguilingeyes · 27/12/2024 13:50

I thought it was perfect. Exceeded my expectaions. We saw Rob Brydon live a couple of weeks ago and He and Ruth Jones sang Islands In The Stream, It was heaven.
My only quibble is that I would have liked another Bryn and Nessa duet, but generally I loved it, and cried quite a bit.

MyOtherProfile · 27/12/2024 13:50

I agree about the duet @beguilingeyes

beguilingeyes · 27/12/2024 13:52

yorktown · 26/12/2024 14:34

I was disappointed that Smithy spent 5 years engaged to awful Sonia and no one said a word (not even Pam). That would have worked better if this episode was a year after the last one rather than five.
I was very happy with the cross country coach trip to the port. I was worried RJ and JC might not give the viewers what they wanted, I am so glad they did.

I felt a bit sorry for Bryn, who's been living with Nessa and Neil the baby for 16 years, now being alone.
The beauty of all of this is that they all feel like real people and I feel privileged to have known them all this time.

But then it wouyld have been in the middle of the Pandemic. remeber that?

TamiTaylorIsMyParentingGuru · 27/12/2024 14:02

Just watched the making of the finale documentary on iplayer - hadn’t seen it advertised anywhere but it appeared on my playlist. It was lovely. Next week there’s a final look back episode too.

Not just that Sonia said Smithy had paid for it all so the wedding would have cost a fair bit
Smithy works for himself i think so whilst he might not be badly off it would have taken a while to pay for everything it looks like a fairly lavish affair.

Yes same here though he is far too young for me!

BurntBroccoli · 27/12/2024 15:40

Cmq · 26/12/2024 22:15

I’d give it 2.5/5. It could have been half as long and still got the message across. The stag, hen and KFC all a bit flat. It was obvious what was going to happen but I don’t think that really matters. I just felt it had no edge? I guess when it came out on bbc3 those people have grown up it just felt a bit watered down for bbc1 Christmas Day.

It could have been longer for me! Didn't want it to end!

BurntBroccoli · 27/12/2024 16:00

JMAngel1 · 26/12/2024 15:58

But why oh why wasn’t it Christmas?
Given that it aired on Xmas Day why was everyone in dodgy fake tan, t shirts and summer dresses????
Really ruined it for me that it wasn’t set at Xmas time.

I didn't really notice what time of year it was set. Didn't matter at all to me.

Lots of people got married in the last 5 years though. I don't hold with the pandemic excuse. I still think they both knew it wasn't right so didn't rush.
