My 12 year old knows all sorts of random 60/70/80 stuff from sound tracks, adverts, from 'singing assembly' at primary school and the aforementioned Horrible Histories - I often show him the original song they have parodied so he can 'get' some of the gags that lie within the styling. When I laugh at how brilliant the Adam Ant, Morrissey, Take That etc impression are he wants to see what I mean.

I don't think Vito is putting on an act at all. That wasn't why he annoys me. He may genuinely be a nice guy but still annoying.

I have to say I don't care if the pros are nice or not, as long as not abusive. Katya is my favourite pro and I suspect she is not very "nice."

I agree with this.

LaMarschallin · 18/11/2024 21:02

Oh God.
That made me watch it again.
I really fancied Greg in Sense and Sensibility too Blush

Re knowing music from before you were born sort of thing. I was a teenager in the 80s and knew chart music from the fifties and sixties. I wasn't overly keen on stuff from the fifties but there were a few songs that I liked. I loved a lot from the sixties partly because my daddy liked them but by the time I was a teenager I was discovering stuff for myself, like The Velvet Underground. Never let it be said that I wasn't pretentious!

I was lucky to get a good jazz education from my dad's LPs as well but unfortunately a lot of them were passed on when he died and as I was only ten then it was a good few years before I bought back stuff that he'd had originally.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/11/2024 23:40

I was an 80s child raised on 50s, 60s, 70s music too. Plus an older brother playing contempoary music.

I keep wondering whether its me hitting middle age and by default thinking current mainstream pop music is bland shite, but I think it is actually overly managed and formulaic. I've heard that it's produced for what will mix and match on spotify playlists.

I got fed up of Radio 2's playlist with too much bland contemporary music and too little breadth of older pop. My children are now being raised with Greatest Hits.

It's odd when your 11yo randomly sings John Denver Country Roads though 😂
He also loves Jolene!

I love eager over excited puppies but I don’t find it attractive behaviour in grown men!

But he's Italian as well??

I love him too. I don't think it is an act at all but he genuinely is a nice guy who acts like a big bouncy puppy.

I think so too! He was the same last year with Ellie.

Just caught up with the threads. Haven't finished watching Saturday's show, as we were away for the weekend.

I have no favourite this year, which is unusual for me, and I'm starting to feel not bothered about watching because of that. I think Chris will win, and will be pleased for him, as what he is doing is amazing. But some of his dances have not been great. Rose wowed me a lot more with what she was able to do despite being deaf, as she became a fabulous dancer. Her tango and CC are two of my favourite Strictly dances.

I'm glad no-one has got a 40 yet. None of the dances so far have deserved one.

I'm looking forward to seeing the pro AT dance from Sunday.

I don't think dancing was as challenging for Rose as it is for Chris. Rose could at least see what was going on with the dance. Chris doesn't have a clue.

FagsMagsandBags · 19/11/2024 04:12

He'll never get to see what he's done and how wonderful it's been at times which I don't think about too much because if I do it will make me feel a little sad.

I feel that too. Also, I was watching Dianne in a pro dance recently and thought how he never gets to actually see her dance, something everyone else takes for granted.

I’m an 80s child with an older sister by ten years, so I knew Bowie, Blondie, the Sex Pistols, Ian Dury etc. And my parents’ music too, like the Beatles, the Stones, Simon & Garfunkel and (oddly) Paco Peña.
I also discovered the Velvet Underground when I was getting into music as a teen, and Jimi Hendrix, the Doors etc. It’s nothing unusual or new to know about music from before your own era, and with music so easily available now it’s even easier.

edited to get rid of ‘Jim Hendrix’ Grin

Lentilweaver · 19/11/2024 09:40

DS turned up in a Guns and Roses tee and asked me if I knew who they were. Cheeky sod!

xsquared · 19/11/2024 19:21

This week's songs and dances. The list seems so short now!

✨Montell and Johannes Quickstep to Get Happy by Ella Fitzgerald
✨Sarah and Vito Rumba to Chains by Tina Arena
✨Tasha and Aljaz American Smooth to Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi
✨Chris and Dianne Paso Doble to El Gato Montes by Manuel Panella
✨Jamie and Michelle Foxtrot to Stand By Me by Ben E. King
✨JB and Lauren Charleston to Yes Sir! That’s My Baby by Firehouse Five Plus Two
✨Pete and Jowita Tango to Easy Lover by Philip Bailey, Phil Collins

musicalfrog · 19/11/2024 19:28

The songs actually sound appropriate!

With the exception of the last one maybe.

Looking forward to a Vito rumba and I love that song!

xsquared · 19/11/2024 19:32

Music choices aren't too bad this week.

Chris has got proper paso music, and I hope we see him amd Dianne in the proper outfits as well.

JB's charleston music was used by Tilly and Nikita only 3 years ago, but it's been a while since we've had a charleston on the show, so let's hope he and Lauren perform a staggering routine.

I hope Jamie and Michelle's dance, dedicated to his friends and family, means that he won't be doing a couples choice.

Sarah and Vito doing rumba means that hopefully she will be dancing on the floor rather than in the air.

Still wish that Pete had a proper ballroom number.
Please dress him appropriately this week.

Tasha will Tasha and be flawless as always.

dapsnotplimsolls · 19/11/2024 19:39

Those choices look good. Not sure I'm looking forward to Sarah's rumba facial expressions.

I mean ballroom music to go with the dance. Easy lover doesn't really sound like something you can tango to, but we will see.

I agree that it's pointless comparing Rose and Chris. Giovanni could show her everything she needed to do, whereas Dianne will have to verbally explain everything to Chris and constantly physically move his body into the right shapes and places until he's learned it off by heart. I did think FFS when Craig made a negative comment about him being a fraction in front of the line of backing dancers... he can't see them to know he's in front of them!!!

The point about him not ever being able to see himself doing these dances - I'd never actually thought about that and it makes me really emotional now I have!

MabelMora · 19/11/2024 23:49

Listening to the radio today and Step On by The Happy Mondays came on - I was having a little jig thinking it would be pretty good music for a samba. Better than a Right Said Fred cha cha cha anyway!

He doesn't even know what a Passo Doble, Cha cha etc should look like. He can't watch a video of himself to see what his mistakes are or how a move should look.
What he is achieving every week is astonishing. I tip my hat to Diane she has done an phenomenal job.

This is not the normal Blackpool calibre of dancing and routines and showmanship that we're used to .

Remember Caroline & Pasha's Charleston at Blackpool?
Jill & Darren's Jive??
Ashley & Pasha's routine??
Danny Mac and Oti's American Smooth was amazeballs when it was on the sprung floor.

Where are today's equivalent of these??

Exactly. And yet Anton and others are wittering on about it being the highest of standards at Blackpool this year.

They undermine their own product when they keep saying stuff like this that’s patently untrue!

Much as I love Vito, I didn’t think his routine with Sarah was a patch on previous Fosse-inspired numbers. Her movements seemed inelegant and hurried to me and talented though she is, she didn’t have the dance mastery or isolation techniques for those tiny nuances of movement to come across well.

BeaLola · 20/11/2024 08:58

I wish Craig had actually said -Diane you need to bin those extra dancers - they were late to the line
