Favourite routine ever

AnneShirleysNewDress · 29/10/2024 21:34

I love Mark and Karen's AT - one of my favourite dances and definitely my favourite AT. Gorgeous!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 29/10/2024 21:43

It was an amazing AT.

Rachel and Vincent's rumba was very good, and Cherie and James's.

Oh I miss Robin 😔

Yes. The pros are not what they were.

Segue: Just bought a cheap ticket for the Robin Windsor tribute. Pasha, Anya Garnis, Deborah Meaden and Vincent Simone dancing. Anton hosting. Perhaps a bit of mish mash but as it was only £15....

Supposed to quote this

I would love to see real ballroom and Latin dancing championships on the TV. Surely it wouldn’t cost too much to show them and they would get a good following I’m sure.

Me too!

I think they used to show some dance competitions on Eurosport.

There are a lot of YouTube channels these days that show competitions.

I have to admit that when I first heard about Icons Week I assumed (what with the 20th anniversary and all) that each couple would have to choose and replicate a routine from a previous iconic dance on the show - think Jill & Darren’s Jive, Mark & Karen’s Salsa (or their AT which is one of my all time faves), Zoe & Ian’s Samba, Rachel & Vincent’s Foxtrot, etc.

Of course I was very relieved that we weren’t going to see old faves butchered!

I think someone in recent years had to do a jive to Elton John. I don't remember who, or if it was any good.

ArcaneWireless · 30/10/2024 19:04

Chris and Karen to Saturday night’s all right for fighting

And Seannnnnnn and Katya to I’m still standing if I recall …

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 30/10/2024 23:22

And Janette and Jake QS to I'm still standing...
It's been used at least four times now

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 31/10/2024 19:53

Not to mention Jill Halfpenny's legendary jive. One of my all time favourite dances.

InconsideratelyThoughtful · 01/11/2024 11:54

I don't watch much Strictly as I can't bear the audience clapping but I would be prepared to watch a dance, any dance, by Pete and Jowita to Filthy/Gorgeous by the Scissor Sisters. Preferably the record as opposed to the Strictly stranglers Singers.

the80sweregreat · 01/11/2024 12:10

I suppose that it's cheaper having the singers rather than paying royalties for the music they use , but I'd rather they could dance to the originals sometimes as I'm sure many of the routines would be improved. Maybe other reasons , but it would be nice to see the dance to the actual song to compare them.
Do the writers still get some money for using the song though? I can imagine it's complicated

Pashazade · 01/11/2024 12:16

Problem is the songs often need to be cut to provide enough change of pace or interest within the allotted time and the straight up originals won't always allow for that.

the80sweregreat · 01/11/2024 12:19

Yes; I suppose the full length version of many original songs wouldn't work.

rainbowruthie · 01/11/2024 13:38

FagsMagsandBags · 29/10/2024 20:01

I really don't want to see Wynne doing a rumba. Maybe I'm being agest, although I'm older than him, but given handgate I think the last thing they need is a rumba.

Agreed
Feel a bit queasy just thinking about it

And sometimes they change the time signature, add little accents etc, to make them fit with the dance better.

I actually like the singers and band, for the most part. The range of what they do is extraordinary; considering that (I presume) none of them are specialist singers in e.g. jazz/big band/pop/hip hop/musical theatre etc, they do a fabulous job. And I just like the fact that a mainstream, prime-time show in this century features live performances like that (not to mention that they play the theme tune!); it's very special, IMO.

TheShellBeach · 01/11/2024 14:17

What bothers my musical brain is when they are dancing supposedly in 3/4 time, but the music is going in 2/4 or 4/4 time.

Just nooooooooo!

CaveMum · 01/11/2024 15:47

@FagsMagsandBags and @rainbowruthie pop over to the video thread to see Shirley dance with Michael Chapman - proof that larger gentlemen can look good dancing. Obviously having ability helps 😜

musicalfrog · 01/11/2024 16:11

So many rude comments about poor Wynne.. Would ppl be saying this about larger women I wonder?

My comment was not in any way at all connected to his size

musicalfrog · 01/11/2024 18:39

No, @rainbowruthie, YOUR comment was about his age. Equally rude.

rainbowruthie · 01/11/2024 18:40

Oh dear it really wasn't, but hey if that's what you think that's fine
