I get Samba and Salsa confused. Which is the one with that really ugly move where the man is behind the woman and they rotate whilst swinging one arm in a circle over their heads?

Just googled to see John Barnes and I can't find it!

Choux · 29/10/2024 12:09

I found it here

strictlydb.com/dance/salsa-11/

I think you are thinking of the samba with the move which is called round the world? I really like that move!

Choux · 29/10/2024 12:13

Actually I think it's known as a samba roll. It's just me who calls it around the world!

musicalfrog · 29/10/2024 14:07

MarkWithaC · 29/10/2024 11:49

I used to love that. And then Len (gone but never forgotten) was always called on to explain what the judges would be looking for.
To go full-on Lord Reith for a minute, it does seem to have drifted away from the spirit of 'Inform, educate, entertain.'

Meh. Progress sucks.

Oh that's fantastic! I don't know much about dance but I love the economy of movement in that, and how they're so in tune with each other and just grooving along.

Yes, it's a samba roll. There's something about it I can't get on with, I always think it looks really awkward and humpy.

I've now realised what I also don't like about the samba, the amount of bounce and syncopation. The cha cha counting gives me the skeeves too.

FagsMagsandBags · 29/10/2024 14:54

I love samba rolls and feel cheated if someone does a samba without them.

Thanks for the Barnes video I really enjoyed that. Not all footballers are rubbish dancers!

Amusing to see how tight and almost on top of each other the judges seating was back in the day.

CaveMum · 29/10/2024 15:01

As with all of these figures, a Samba Roll danced well is a thing of beauty; one danced badly looks like some sort of wresting move gone wrong!

It's like when people say they don't like the rumba as a dance - I put it to those people that they've never seen a proper rumba actually danced the way it should be.

Lentilweaver · 29/10/2024 15:10

Yes. The pros are not what they were.

Segue: Just bought a cheap ticket for the Robin Windsor tribute. Pasha, Anya Garnis, Deborah Meaden and Vincent Simone dancing. Anton hosting. Perhaps a bit of mish mash but as it was only £15....

xsquared · 29/10/2024 15:16

Yep, see Danny Mac. Chock full of samba content, smooth samba rolls and transitions from one move to the next.

musicalfrog · 29/10/2024 14:07

Meh. Progress sucks.

I don't think that IS progress.

musicalfrog · 29/10/2024 15:43

Oh I agree. I should have put 'progress' sucks. It's not progress at all.

musicalfrog · 29/10/2024 17:49

Thanks for linking to the videos @CaveMum all I can say is maybe they should reduce the number of couples and increase the wages. Quality over quantity, just my opinion.

Sunbird24 · 29/10/2024 18:45

Anyone watching ITT? I’m loving Joanne’s dress, really want to know where it’s from!

Runningupthecurtains · 29/10/2024 19:09

@Sunbird24

I thought it could be Nancy Mac. Sadly they went out of business just when I finally had an occasional that would have justified me buying something from them.

You might get lucky on Vinted/eBay.

xsquared · 29/10/2024 19:12

Samba to Faith was used by Katya amd Adam a few years ago. It was abysmal from what I remember. With it being the dance of death, I fear Jamie might be in danger but we'll see.

Couples Choice usually score high, so I think both JB and Tasha will do well. It will be interesting to see what sort of dance Tasha does for her CC.

Not overly keen on Sarah, but I am looking forward to her and Vito's cha×3 to Like a prayer.

Montell is always graceful in ballroom, so she do well. However, I will always love you has a time signature of 4/4 so I don't know how a Waltz would work. The band will have to produce an appropriate arrangement to dance to!

Hopefully Shayne and Nancy will give a strong performance to Help!

It doesn't look like Wynne will be dressing as Shirley Bassey, given he's doing the rumba. I should think that's a relief as they're not making him do a comedic routine, but rumba is always a meh dance too, unless there's chemistry.

I'll have to look up the others.

FagsMagsandBags · 29/10/2024 20:01

I really don't want to see Wynne doing a rumba. Maybe I'm being agest, although I'm older than him, but given handgate I think the last thing they need is a rumba.

virgocatlover · 29/10/2024 20:09

I think Wynne will be going this week. DO prediction Wynne v Shayne or Wynne v Sam.

xsquared · 29/10/2024 20:09

Yes, I'm afraid that is rather ageist. Did you mind seeing Angela Rippon or Debbie McGee do the rumba?

TennisWithDeborah · 29/10/2024 20:14

I’m looking forward to Sarah’s most, from that list.

FagsMagsandBags · 29/10/2024 20:52

xsquared · 29/10/2024 20:09

Debbie no, Angela a little but they were very good dancers and if I'm remembering correctly she was better than I feared she would be (Angela). There are very few celebrity men who can pull off a good rumba and I don't think Wynne is going to be one of them. It's the celebrity men who give me the dancing ick with the rumba, the women not as much although I'm glad we never saw Anne Widdecombe do it.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 29/10/2024 20:57

On the video thread there's always at some point the rumba with Shirley and a man of the fuller figure. If Wynne could channel him, I'd chuck him a vote.

I don't really understand icons week if I'm being honest.
If they were dressing up as their icon, all I can think of is Olly Murs' Startstruck and the wigs of doom. That was an ubercringe Stars In Your Eyes knock-off, from Mad eyes Meatloaf to Adam Lambert thinking What did I sign up to? to Olly saying "Stay Cheeky" each week.

If they were choosing classic dances to emulate (which I think ITV has done in the past) I'd be wincing at MJ, sighing at Dirty Dancing and yawning at Singing in the sodding rain.

So we've ended up with Bruno Mars, Whitney, Taytay, Madge, Pink? (The Cleaner reference there Wink), KISS, George, Freddie, The Beatles and Shirl, three of which have been used before.

I'd rather they'd done what a pp mentioned - and has been done in the States - where they reproduced 10 iconic routines taken from the last 21 series.
You might have deemed certain ones (Jay's jive, Danny's samba, Ed's salsa) to be untouchable but I'm sure they could have picked ten decent ones to emulate/pay homage to and got the original slebs to come along and mentor/advise/cheerlead.

Pashazade · 29/10/2024 21:11

I was thinking Wynne needs to channel that chap Shirley danced with on the video, it's such a great dance. I think he could pull it off.

CaveMum · 29/10/2024 21:23

I have to admit that when I first heard about Icons Week I assumed (what with the 20th anniversary and all) that each couple would have to choose and replicate a routine from a previous iconic dance on the show - think Jill & Darren’s Jive, Mark & Karen’s Salsa (or their AT which is one of my all time faves), Zoe & Ian’s Samba, Rachel & Vincent’s Foxtrot, etc.

Of course I was very relieved that we weren’t going to see old faves butchered!
