Is anyone watching? New series with Nicole Kidman?

OP posts:
Riverhillhouse · 09/09/2024 23:08

Seen all the episodes now- ending was a bit of a damp squib. It was enjoyable in an escapist sort of way but I find myself once again disagreeing with Lucy Mangan’s review in the Guardian where she gave it 4 stars. I don’t think I’d recommend it to anyone.

ThenYouCrossMe · 09/09/2024 23:24

It wasn't great. I was bored a lot and nearly gave up a few times. I wouldn't recommend it.

I liked it but don't get the ending - don't want to say too much but I don't know what the motive would have been?! I must have missed something! Love Nicole Kidman, she is brilliant

Trying to be vague.. but maybe Merritts news will mean the family coming apart and the murderer won't have the fortune and lifestyle they are enjoying currently?

EachandEveryone · 10/09/2024 01:11

I didn’t get the ending either. So was it the father that was rich all along and that’s were the trust funds had come from?

Olivie12 · 10/09/2024 06:24

I really liked it, binged it all in one day.

newnamethanks · 10/09/2024 07:53

Imo, Lucy Mangan reviews frequently over-estimate the appeal of the material she's seen but perhaps that's just me.

Riverhillhouse · 10/09/2024 08:10

YES @newnamethanks! I really liked her as a columnist but I don’t really rate her as a reviewer as she gives gushing reviews to so many mediocre TV shows.

spolier

The boys were due to inherit from a Trust fund once the youngest boy turned 18. The youngest was due to turn 18 in a couple of weeks so they would all get the inheritance then. However if Merritt gave birth that child would become the youngest and everyone would have to wait another 18 years.

PuppyMonkey · 10/09/2024 08:33

If the youngest was due to turn 18 in just a few weeks, surely that would have been months before any potential new baby would have been born. Wouldn’t the trust fund have had to pay out?

Anyway, enjoyed this show, a load of bollocks but very engaging. Grin

Wineandcupcakes · 10/09/2024 08:35

I really enjoyed it. I find it odd when people say they can’t watch it due to her surgery, yes she’s had some work but she’s not bloody Frankenstein.

Well no as she was already pregnant.

PuppyMonkey · 10/09/2024 08:44

Yes I picked up that she was pregnant thanks. Grin

I just wondered about the legalities about the youngest turning 18 months before the baby was due - would that not trump any new baby who may or may not arrive safely into the world.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/09/2024 08:47

I really enjoyed this, good acting all round

I think you’re over thinking, it’s not real 😂 however yours arguing the baby isn’t a baby until it’s born. The show clearly took the opposite view, plus she looked ready to pop.

Maybe, but that would have changed the plot ever so slightly , there wouldn’t have been a murder, and it would have been all about the wedding and poor Amelia would have been trapped in that disfunctional family before you could say prenup.Though we would have got to see the wedding outfits ( what body parts would Merrits dress have displayed, would Tag have shaved for the occasion, what would Greer have worn, how much chest would Shooter show?)

Two things I can’t understand!

Why did Amelia’s mother wear such a terrible wig, I mean I know why she wore it, but why did she choose it?

Why did .Amelia try her wedding dress on in the middle of the night before her wedding?

Other plot holes are available but these really annoyed me.

But the DIL’s pregnancy wasn’t the issue (she was pregnant by one of the sons who would be inheriting) - the issue was the other pregnancy which had just been announced and was still very early days (certainly not showing in that stringy dress!) It was this new pregnancy that would disrupt the inheritance line.

But as was mentioned before, it’s all fiction and the story had many plot holes!!

AllFours · 10/09/2024 09:04

Sorry, my post was responding to @PuppyMonkey who seemed confused by the two different pregnancies, the second of which had major repercussions for the family. (Still full of plot holes!)

AllFours · 10/09/2024 09:06

Or maybe I was replying to @Wineandcupcakes - I’m confused now (sort of like that plot!) 😆

newnamethanks · 10/09/2024 09:06

The poor wig is a signifier of Amelia's family 'poverty' and demonstrates Amelia is not One of Us.

rewilded · 10/09/2024 09:16

I only managed half an episode. It feels like just another 'Nicole Kidman' vanity project.

The recent one with Zac Effron made me promise myself never to watch anything with NK again.

Wineandcupcakes · 10/09/2024 09:39

I’ve not seen the Zac effron effort, but I like Nicole’s work generally, she’s done some good movies and series’s. Yes she’s done some dodgy stuff, who hasn’t, but overall she tends to pick some good scripts.

PuppyMonkey · 10/09/2024 09:49

I was in no way confused by any of the pregnancies. Grin

Yes, that's a major plot hole. Also Tag (strange name) could have denied the baby was his and they'd have to go through DNA tests. So we're talking a year or so. They couldn't put the trust fund on hold because a woman is pregnant with a baby who may or may not be Tag's and may not even be carried to term.

Overall, I enjoyed it but thought the ending was a bit of a damp squib. Someone said they may be setting it up for a series two but I'm not sure what would be left? The story seemed completed.
