Olympic Opening ceremony watch along

Anyone else watching? It’s all kicking off at 6:30pm, apparently with the athletes parade first.

London 2012 OC was remarkable, I’m hoping the French can match that magic!

Paris is wonderful, this ceremony is not.

Yes, I like the flotilla as a way of transporting the athletes, but am missing the big stadium show. It feels a bit like the bus parade football teams have.

In the modern era? No. Classical music yes, it's arguably one of the best in the world for music.

To be honest at the time I wasn't overwhelmed by the 2012 opening ceremony. I thinks its quite British to be cynical. I was sort of missing that quasi communist Chinese synchronised mass marching and dancing formations. But I was genuinely hoping to be wowed by this show - by something different.

But I spent all day watching the Queens funeral - not a royalist at all - but the pomp and pageantry was extraordinary. Hard to beat really (not hinting King Charlie...)

I'm not sure the dance and performance routines tonight are that impactful - restricted by scale and overwhelmed by the architecture. A stadium concentrates the atmosphere and power of performance and replicates the excitement and atmosphere of the super Saturday track event finals.

When they can't even get a cat walk scene right. It just doesn't work.

They are getting the best view :) Paris from the Seine is a treat any day and now they can see all the show everywhere (unlike the rest of the spectators)
Normally athletes miss most of the stuff on the stadium!

This ceremony is growing on me. Not the best I’ve seen, certainly, but I am getting into the spirit now.

It must be terrible for live spectators though. Some boats passing in the pissing rain and performers you can’t really see.

This is underwhelming.

I thought the pace of it was totally off and the 'crowd' didn't work because it was so sparse. The effect was just all wrong.
