Got a day off today so I’m binging Baby Reindeer. Two episodes in and it’s great so far, I see that it’s previously been a stage show but I’ve never heard of it so looking forward to finding out what happens. It’s about a comedian being stalked by a woman in her 40s.

Late to this but it’s well done

I feel for the guy and it’s quite incredible that his comedy was quite bad but he’s created a successful tv show

Read an interview with a woman who worked with Gadd at the pub when FH would come in. She describes it as an incredibly misogynistic place to work and said the male staff bullied and taunted FH.

It sounds like the scene where Gadd reluctantly joins in with mocking FH is skimming over the amount of sexist harassment and mocking they all engaged in constantly, and not just with FH.

I think Gadd was a willing participant in all that.

Gadd is 100% right though, she doesn't recognise herself. She's completely deluded about her past behaviour.

...and about her own appearance! Although she did scrub up well on Piers Morgan!

She’s not above misogyny herself though is she? When she was directing verbal abuse at women he was dating.

That's a very good point.

I think the pub cane across as having a masculine toxicity the way RG portrayed it. In reality though, the whole story has a highly toxic / misogynistic theme.

Fucked up person writes a story about fucked up people pretty much sums it up for me. Nobody seems to come out of it looking like a well adjusted individual.

I think that's what I liked about it, though. In a way it's a sort of comedy of errors about how humans crave approval and belonging, and seek it in whatever way we can.

Yes, I found it strangely relatable (although I've not been through any of Richards experiences.)

taylorswift1989 · 21/05/2024 23:45

I'm not saying she's not a stalker/terrible person.

But I do think that RG is a misogynist and that he abused FH along with his mates at the pub. His narrative about being too kind for his own good, I don't believe.

Dollenganger333 · 22/05/2024 08:18

Was the narrative about him being kind? I didn’t pick that up - my impression was him saying he has a shedload of issues and unpleasant traits, himself.

I didn’t warm to him but she’s definitely a nasty piece of work with all of her racism and general bigotry. Apparently, it’s now becoming evident that she stalked Keir Starmer(!)

Yeah, I get this. He was all "I should have walked away there, but... I'm such a melt / too soft / too kind / too weak / too stupid"

He didn't actually say he was too kind as such, but it's definitely implied. I feel that it's a deliberate part of his narrative that he was 'nice' to the crazy woman and look what happened.

I'm not sure. Earlier on, he talks about how he must have been getting something out of it, and the suggestion is that she gives him the adulation he is hoping to achieve elsewhere. Also, she is the only one who instinctively understands his trauma.

Dollenganger333 · 22/05/2024 11:59

But he does also admit to trying to entrap her and he admits that he went against the police and contacted her.

I really enjoyed the series and must say I watched the interview with Fiona and subsequent videos on PM's YouTube channel
really interesting viewing. I don't really know what to make of it.

I think he actually wants people to confront his rapist - it is his actual account that "loved" this

Hotttchoc · 28/05/2024 23:26

@KitKatChunki I couldn't work out from your screenshot what it was showing at first

KitKatChunki · 28/05/2024 23:28

Sorry, wasn't very clear.

HowIrresponsible · 15/07/2024 22:16

Im late to the party, i watched it back in April.

One thing I didn't understand is why he didn't just delete his old comedy videos off his website.

Instead of him being embarrassed about it and telling Martha not to show people from the pub. Why didn't he just delete it?

I also loved the irony that Martha had invented a whole new persona to attract Donny. She was a fantasist who created a whole new identity for herself and Donny did the same with Terri. He pretended to be something he wasn't for the person he loved the same way Martha did him so they were very much alike.

CurrentHun · 31/07/2024 20:55

I thought it was clever how they started and ended with the same scene of the drink on the house in the Heart. Showing the two are alike in some way, or that we are all vulnerable or that we are all capable of fantasy lives that can be dangerous. It was a reallt thought provoking series.
