New Channel 5 drama Love Rat, starring Sally Lindsay and Neil Morrissey, blends escapism and thriller as a holiday romance turns into a hunt for justice.

Emma, reeling from her divorce and estrangement from her daughter, seeks a new start in Cyprus, where she meets Niko, the charismatic hotel owner.

Their whirlwind romance, filled with luxury and passion, leads Emma to consider a future with Niko, far from her UK life.

She invests in this dream by lending Niko money for a villa, only to have him disappear with everything she gave.

Faced with betrayal, Emma embarks on a determined search to find Niko and reclaim her stolen funds, delving into Cyprus’s shadowy corners of deceit.

This journey uncovers startling truths about Niko and forces Emma to confront the realities of trust and betrayal.

Thanks Blondes. I thought I'd replied to this earlier, it must just be sitting on another device unposted. I'll watch, I like Sally, although she's not got a huge range as an actress, not that she's had the chance to display on TV anyway. I can't ever imagine her being mean or evil for example. She seems to get a lot of work, primarily I suppose through her Madame Blanc series, writing, producing and acting in it. I can well see her as a woman of a certain age, taken in by a charming villain. Romance fraud is growing at a very alarming rate and these boards are full of people who are targeted and deceived.

I'm not keen on Neil Morrissey so will have to see how he shapes up in this. I like it when the series plays out over consecutive nights.

Tried looking on line for details of the writers, but haven't been able to find anything as yet.

Love Rat was ordered for Channel 5 by Sebastian Cardwell, deputy chief content officer, UK at Paramount. Executive producers for Clapperboard are Mike Benson and Andy Morgan, with producer Jonathan Phillips. Polly Buckle (A Discovery of Witches) is lead writer, and Katherine Churcher (Grantchester, Killing Eve) joins as director.
Sally Lindsay said: “Love Rat is a brilliantly entertaining story, full of twists and surprises; it really turns the topic on its head which is what drew me to the project. Emma is an interesting and layered character that everyone will be rooting for as she takes control of her situation and her destiny.”

Found that on televisual by looking for Clapperboard Studios.

Polly Buckle, the lead writer, has a few writing credits coming up.

This sounds quite good but unsure about Neil Morrissey . I couldn't take him seriously in Finders Keepers because I always think of him as the character in Men Behaving Badly ! Will give this one a try though .

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2024 16:44

I hope the beard has gone or dyed hair

He looked old in finders keepers

Signing in !
I'm always in awe when I hear of a woman taking herself off for a solo holiday , but surely she's got everything wrong so far !

RenoDakota · 11/03/2024 21:51

Utterly unbelievable but addictive shite.

RosaMoline · 11/03/2024 21:59

Just watched this, and all I can think is: ‘what a fucking idiot!’

celiajg · 11/03/2024 22:01

I was cringing with embarrassment for her for falling for it. But now want to know what happens next!

TheChosenTwo · 11/03/2024 22:24

Going to wait until these are all available to watch but typically C5 programmes are utterly shite and I don’t normally finish them!

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 11/03/2024 23:28

Oh god - utter rubbish but I also really enjoyed it. Is it on tomorrow night? I generally can't stand channel 5 stuff but at least there are a couple of known faces (mainly Emma).

When you consider that you hear about vulnerable (normally older or middle aged) women being scammed on the internet and handing over thousands to someone they have never met - it's not totally inconceivable as a storyline.

He was a real human being, said all the right things, handsome and (supposedly) solvent. I mean I still think she was completely ridiculous but worse things can and do happen in real life. Nuts!

Teentrauma · 12/03/2024 07:18

Utterly ridiculous, as if anyone would be THAT stupid. Also implausible she would agree to move in with him so easily after just a 2 week holiday. Nevertheless, I will be watching again tonight!

RosaMoline · 12/03/2024 07:57

@Teentrauma
It does seem to stretch incredulity, but I do believe the scenario is not unrealistic.

TheFifthTellytubby · 12/03/2024 08:46

Still not sure how he set it all up as she was the one who did the chasing at the start. The woman at the bar is clearly in on the scam, but was she briefed to tell any lone woman who asked, that the handsome stranger was the hotel owner? Especially if she just happened to be reading a copy of the same book? Maybe he had an accomplice on the plane on the way out, to spot potential marks? Too many coincidences ...

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 12/03/2024 08:50

@TheFifthTellytubby

Yes I thought the same about Wuthering Heights.

I do think she did the chasing, but maybe he has an expert eye in spotting someone who was vulnerable, on there own and a bit lonely. Who knows?! Maybe he would have done a bit more chasing if she hadn't? I suppose we have to suspend our disbelief on this one and just enjoy (if that's the right word) the series!

RosaMoline · 12/03/2024 09:15

I think the most unrealistic aspect is that both would be reading ‘Wuthering Heights’ !
I’d have her down for more of a chic lit type of lady.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/03/2024 09:36

Well what I said before I watched it

She was silly to give her money to a stranger

Whether a rich handsome one

She made the first move /snog on the beach and was obv a rebound shag

OP posts:
RosaMoline · 12/03/2024 09:47

I’m guessing it’s going to be VERY predictable.
Here’s what I think will happen:
after she’s arrested, a kindly detective takes pity on her, and is touched by her terrible situation, and promises to help.
Her ‘one phone call’ (from jail) is to Neil Morrissey, who immediately gets on a plane to Cyprus and (somehow) bails her out.
The kindly Cypriot detective, Emma and Neil (Pete) do some digging and find a string of women that have been conned by ‘’Niko in an identical scam (Niko is not his real name, obvs)
’Niko’ is married to the hotel worker, who’s part of the scam. Along with the fake estate agent (ok that’s blindingly obvious at this point!)
With the aid of the other scammed women, the kindly detective & Neil/Pete, her €225,000 is miraculously returned to her. ‘Niko’ is brought to justice and she attends court.
Neil/Pete & Emma return to England & they decide to make another go of things.
The End.
