Agree with others that it was a shit ending.

I feel robbed. 😪

CICTGIGF · 25/12/2023 21:41

I thought it was disappointing too and I found the whole episode quite boring. Her leaving because the ghosts thought she needed space and they wouldn’t be interfering with the baby made no sense. The ghosts could have just stopped offering advice with the baby or lived in a seperate part of the huge house. And she would have just seen more ghosts wherever else she lived anyway. I think the writers must have forgotten they had her seeing ghosts away from the house too. I found the very end quite touching, but I agree she just wouldn’t have left them.

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 25/12/2023 21:42

Feel really bad criticising them because I love the cast/writers and the programme but agree with PPs...this was not the ending we all wanted.

I think Julian's investments/gambling paying off would have been a good one allowing them to buy the house off the posho neighbour with the drunk wife and the Labradors then living there whilst leasing Button House out as a hotel.

Alison could live in day-to-day peace but visit them over the garden hedge daily or go onto he hotel grounds whenever. Their kids could grow up playing with the ghosts but also have a normal home life. They'd be rich and happy but still have learned all the lessons about being helpful, patient and humble.

But it's not my story to finish!

TwoUpTwoDown · 25/12/2023 21:45

I thought it was a beautiful ending!

Mzrcd · 25/12/2023 21:45

I think unfortunately it was a boring end and that is so sad after everything else.

Cooroo · 25/12/2023 21:55

It had got less good as it went on. I loved Ghosts US which is similar but explores some clever ideas and is a great substitute.

Pebble21uk · 25/12/2023 22:03

Such a disappointing ending... I wish there hadn't been a special and I could have decided on my own ending!
Always wanted Mike to see the ghosts... and with Mia being able to see them, the whole family could have seen them for a time.
Worst was the MIL... far too much time given to a new supporting character. When it's the last ever ep you only want the characters you already know and love.
Pants!

I clearly need to do a rewatch! Was this all at the house/in the grounds though?

As well as the various other ghosts Alison sees in Ep2 outside of Button House as others have mentioned, there's been ghosts in later episodes too - the gamekeeper ghost at the garden boundary and a civil war ghost when out walking with her fraud 'sister'.

At least you'll enjoy watching again if you've forgotten them!

I don’t get why people think she would have seen ghosts everywhere else? Isn’t the link that it’s her ancestral home? Throughout the series she’s never seen other ghosts when out shopping etc (Or at least I don’t think it’s ever been mentioned)

Yes she has- the nurse pushing the baby through the village, the roundhead soldier in the park she and her 'sister' drive to for a walk, the ghosts in the houses she goes to look at.

The hitch-hiker ghost on the hen night.

Hedjwitch · 25/12/2023 22:18

Feel really cheated. A poor way to end. Alison would never have left them, especially after Julian's speech in the last series. It missed the mark.

PosyPrettyToes · 25/12/2023 22:20

I hated it. It made absolutely no sense because Allison sees ghosts everywhere, so all she’s moving away from is these particular ghosts - no guarantee at all that there wouldn’t be as interfering or worse ghosts anywhere else she went.

Rantypanties · 25/12/2023 22:22

It felt far too rushed for a final episode. It deserved an hour so that the MIL storyline wasn’t so overbearing and we could have a little longer with them saying their goodbyes. Shame!

ExpensiveDecorations · 25/12/2023 22:23

She'll see them but won't let them into her life in the same way. In any normal house there'll never be more than the odd one, not whole teams of them.

GrouchyKiwi · 25/12/2023 22:24

I'm so sad it's finished but I liked the very end (agree about not enough time being spent on the characters we love).

I'm pleased that they didn't let it drag on too long, though.

I hope the 6 idiots make a new programme. I love them all.

JaninaDuszejko · 25/12/2023 22:44

I wanted it to end with Mia being able to see the ghosts as a baby but then continuing to do that as she grows because her Mum could see them too and so when Alison gets old it's OK because her children can look after the house and ghosts forever.

RobinGet · 25/12/2023 22:45

“When you first arrived here, I thought you were a prostitute” 😆

I really enjoyed it, but yes, too much of the MIL. But I suppose they used the MIL as a catalyst for Alison and Mike leaving, rather than solely making the ghosts the ones that drove Alison mad.

Cathpot · 25/12/2023 23:04

Emotionally drained as binged watched the last 3 episodes of the final series with DDs and tipped over into the Christmas special without realising that it was the last one. Completely agree that moving makes no sense - if you can see ghosts you want them to be friendly predictable ghosts - I’m surprised Alison ever left the grounds to be honest given some of the other ghosts she saw in the early series. There were so many ways out without abandoning the house- Julian making millions on the stock market, some sort of treasure turning up in the strangely under- explored safe room, doing a deal with the golf club so they rebuilt the gatehouse to live in and ran the bar..We have decided the last one is how it ends in our heads and we can just ignore the last 15 mins of this one.

RainDropsStorm · 25/12/2023 23:17

Not long watched and agree the ending wasn't great. I feel robbed that after everything they all went through, they just packed up and left.

Floralnomad · 25/12/2023 23:32

I think the whole thing has been a bit flat since Mary left but tonight’s episode was really poor , very disappointing.

Dimdimdim · 25/12/2023 23:46

I agree with a previous poster, I thought Julian's investments would have paid off and allowed them to continue living there comfortably. I also think that Mike should've seen the ghosts on the monitor.

But there was also at least one ghost in the neighbours house. And they wouldn't have moved as they owned the village.

LuluBlakey1 · 25/12/2023 23:57

I thought the gamekeeper ghost on the neighbour's land was played by Martin Freeman until DH said he wasn't. Then I watched it again and had no idea why I thought he was Martin Freeman.

Alison is now condemned to a life living amongst unexpected ghosts when she could have been with those she knows and loves.

StillCreatingAName · 26/12/2023 00:04

I thought Mike’s mum was to be a ghost, or the vicar, but I’d also thought that was going to happen with Mike’s friend a couple of episodes back. I wanted Mike to finally meet them, so an accident like Alison, not death and it would have been fitting for him to leave Button House having finally met them. The sauna final scene was brilliant, classic Ghosts humour.

LunaNorth · 26/12/2023 01:24

The whole thing just lacked heart and energy. I wonder if the six idiots were sad that it was ending and that reluctance came through in the episode?
