I haven’t read any posts on here but my take is….

It was shit and very not worth the wait. What a complete anti climax

LunaNorth · 25/12/2023 21:10

She just wouldn’t have left them. Never.

LunaNorth · 25/12/2023 21:12

It’s like getting rid of your dog when you have a baby. You just don’t.

cuthbertthecat · 25/12/2023 20:53

@LuluBlakey1 yes Grin. I never get tired of it because I am a 14 year old boy.

I thought it was a good ending. I couldn't think of a way that they could afford the house, have a family and keep up the ghost upkeep. Having them sucked off would have left her without her family and Mike/Alison couldn't die.

I loved Mike warning them about the exorcism, the Captain trying the baby talk and the plague pit/sauna.

I had all kinds of ideas for the ending:

  1. The baby died and the ghosts looked after it
  2. Alison and the baby died in a car crash in the way back from the hospital, Mike survived but a head injury meant he could see them all. He got insurance money and could afford Button House and stay with them all.
  3. They all died at the end and stayed at Button House with the ghosts. I thought Mike would be good friends with Robin and Pat.
  4. Someone bought the house but asked Mike and Alison to stay on as 'house and estate management', and rebuilt the gatehouse for them.
  5. They discovered an amazing 'Neanderthal' something in an archeological dig and opened the estate as a cultural attraction. Allowed them to stay in the house, partly converted to cafe/museum- potential for further ghosts.
Missymarple · 25/12/2023 21:14

It was such a fantastic series, and I think a tribute to how well written it was that I feel so sad about how it ended. I would have loved for Mike to have become able to see the ghosts. Or a fast forward into the future to see Mia interacting with them or something. Anything that didn't involve them being left behind by the one living person in all those years that could actually see and hear them.

Am off to watch Bridesmaids to cheer myself up

HappyCamperTent · 25/12/2023 21:18

What upset me the most is the lack of interaction between everyone

That's what was missing! Too much other stuff going on. Ghosts shouldve been the main focus..

MotherOfCatBoy · 25/12/2023 21:20

Nope. Couldn’t see how they’d make that decision when they made the opposite one before. I get the reasons but it didn’t ring true. The return every year thing was sweet but it felt like it was thrown in and we didn’t get to see it - that could be a whole episode. And agree Alison would have seen ghosts like the two airmen wherever she went.
Not buying it.

shockeditellyou · 25/12/2023 21:22

I thought it was a weak ending too! I had thought the MiL was going to kick the bucket and pop up as a ghost!

I don’t like it when randomness (the MIL) get big parts in major episodes. Feels like a cop out.

crumpet · 25/12/2023 21:26

I don’t get why people think she would have seen ghosts everywhere else? Isn’t the link that it’s her ancestral home? Throughout the series she’s never seen other ghosts when out shopping etc (Or at least I don’t think it’s ever been mentioned)

MistletoeandMoccasins · 25/12/2023 21:27

The baby died and the ghosts looked after it too dark

Alison and the baby died in a car crash in the way back from the hospital too dark Mike survived but a head injury meant he could see them all. He got insurance money and could afford Button House and stay with them all.

They all died at the end and stayed at Button House with the ghosts. I thought Mike would be good friends with Robin and Pat. Yes, the aging thing then headstones then all the ghosts shouting "Mike!" as he entered the room

Someone bought the house but asked Mike and Alison to stay on as 'house and estate management', and rebuilt the gatehouse for them. okay

They discovered an amazing 'Neanderthal' something in an archaeological dig and opened the estate as a cultural attraction. Allowed them to stay in the house, partly converted to cafe/museum- potential for further ghosts. okay

Others on here had said Nativity scene/sure they could have worked out a tableau with new born in it somewhere
Others thought Julian's investments could pay off - this would have enabled them to stay
Near death in birth - enough for Alison to be among the ghosts for a short while before they returned her to the land of the living - would have needed an immaculate script
But annoying MIL for 2/3 of it then Alison leaving - nope, nope, nope

The only redeeming feature is a spin-off movie set in a hotel with the ghosts, but even then it doesn't do it for me personally.

MotherOfCatBoy · 25/12/2023 21:28

She has - in Series 1 they thought about leaving and Alison saw ghosts in lots of other places. They found a new build where nothing had “happened” but decided it was too dull so stayed in Button House.

Choice4567 · 25/12/2023 21:28

That was awful. I feel so sad I watched it, I’m not re-watching. To me the last episode will be the last one of series 5

there was barely any ghosts in the episodes. Alison wouldn’t leave when she found out what Julian had done. But she’d leave just because they suggested it? Don’t buy it

flat. Not funny. Didn’t make sense. Very disappointed

foxlover47 · 25/12/2023 21:28

Had a cry , didn't know it would get to me quite like that !
How could you leave them :(

CousinGreg55 · 25/12/2023 21:29

It didn't feel like a normal episode, I get that it's realistic for a new mum to be tired and grumpy but it's not particularly funny. There was far too much of the MIL and not enough of the ghosts.

Newgirls · 25/12/2023 21:30

It was so good. It made sense to me as Alison now needs to look after her new family - baby and any more kids that come. She can’t be looking after the ghosts so they let her go. Very lovely. I bet she popped back all the time. Also the hotel would have been more entertaining for them - lots of new people to watch etc

(yes I know it’s not real 😂)

No she does see ghosts everywhere - Ww2 pilots, nannies and babies, dead hitchhiker, doctor at hospital ...

I clearly need to do a rewatch! Was this all at the house/in the grounds though?

Yes she had seen lots of ghosts when outside the house. Lots when they were house hunting, a hitchhiker, in the hospital, on a walk

Literally she has, in episode 2 of the first series. That's how she worked out it wasn't in her head because the ghosts she saw at the house were always the same.

MotherOfCatBoy · 25/12/2023 21:34

And this is the reason it doesn’t make sense to me that they would leave. Imagine being able to see ghosts everywhere - too much! Having done that in S1 they seem to have ignored that logic totally and it doesn’t make sense.

ExpensiveDecorations · 25/12/2023 21:37

We loved it, the MIL experience showed Alison and Mike that they needed to be on their own now, the birth of Mia changed everything and the Ghosts realised it too and were brave enough to let them go. Like that old saying if you love someone let them go, if they were yours they'll return. And showing Alison and Mike coming back to visit was just lovely. The ghosts can keep themselves entertained with the hotel guests, their TVs etc and they have Julian's finger if they need a tiny nudge into reality. So glad none of Alison, Mike and Mia died.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/12/2023 21:38

@crumpet she sees them. In s1

In houses they look at to escape the ghosts

Ww2 pilot in trees by a flat

Doctors in hospitals

Bloke in field

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 25/12/2023 21:38

I would have liked it if, when the ghosts were playing with Mia, she could see them 😊

Atethehalloweenchocs · 25/12/2023 21:38

The pacing and focus was not good, but I loved them going back regularly for years to visit, and the plague ghosts in the spa. And didnt the ghosts say they would like it to be a hotel at some point?
