Just binged watched the whole 4 episodes . What a lovely flawed family, I really think they are completely made for each other. It was also amazing watching all the highs and lows of his football career, but god we should be ashamed of what the England supporters put him through when he slipped up in the world cup against Argentina, what he went through was horrific .

I’ve just finished the first episode. I remember I was 10 when they played the match against Argentina, I remember the media going nuts about him getting sent off… I’m football mad, and to me it was nuts that they blamed him solely. It was a team. it’s weird to see Victoria so open aswell because I always thought she came across so shy and quiet over that period. I was a huge spice girls fan, like obsessed. so when they got together.. it was mad.. I’ve always thought they were down to earth any way. Can’t wait to watch the rest 🥺

Crimsonripple · 04/10/2023 21:01

The abuse was absolutely horrendous and completely unacceptable. British press at that time were vultures. He made a silly mistake but never deserved that level of abuse. Rio Ferdinand was right in what he said regarding well-being. I've just started episode 3 so looking forward to the rest (Coming from an Arsenal fan).

I think it's certainly shown how in love he and Victoria are/were.

JaneKatSuttonGoals · 04/10/2023 21:15

Can't wait for the kids to goto bed so that I can watch this.

EconomyClassRockstar · 05/10/2023 02:14

I have always been on Team Beckham. I don’t even know why! I just like them and always have. It was interesting they both finally referred to the Loos affair and, without admitting it, they admitted it.

And it was BRILLIANT that Victoria finally got to challenge why she’s always painted as the bad guy.

Wtfnowseptember · 05/10/2023 03:44

What was said about Loos?

themessygarden · 05/10/2023 06:23

I was surprised how likeable I found him, and he was gorgeous in his blonde ponytail era. They didn't really address the Loos affair at all though, just that it was an awful time for them, which could be seen as awful because of the tabloid rumours rather than admitting he had an affair, although there were no denials.

It was horrendous how he was villfied after England lost the world cup (at least, I think it was the world cup) and you can only admire him for how he coped with it, another person would not have survived it. Glen Hoddle treated him abominably, DB was only 23 at the time, he should have been out there supporting and protecting him instead of fanning the flames.

What I do find strange and a bit disturbing, considering how he was treated during his career by the press and fans and having kidnapping threats on their children, is why they exposed their kids in the way they have done and still do.

I found VB came across as insufferable and boring, which was the opposite to how I had perceived her.

Their Cotswolds home ilooks stunning.

LennyBalls · 05/10/2023 06:49

Have seen Glenn Hoddle in a new light. What a nasty horrible man. David Beckham was practically a kid when all that happened and Hoddle threw him to the wolves.

qwerty123454 · 05/10/2023 07:07

Hoddle = scum

The man who said disabled people are being punished for their wrongs in a former life

Inkanta · 05/10/2023 07:16

Enjoyed this - watched all 4 episodes in one sitting. I like the Beckhams - nice family. Like their openness and humour.

Good to see Hoddle and the likes exposed.

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 05/10/2023 07:22

One of the things that’s always struck me was how she insisted on putting the children on the car before talking to anyone. Considering how much children are shoved in front of the camera these days. I never saw hers. I have always like them. Not always agreed with certain things. And it must be hard living their life on the public eye. But I have always liked them. They have been together for so long now. They must be happy together.

TeamSleep · 05/10/2023 07:50

I really enjoyed this. I agree with pp, I felt they kind of admitted the Loos affair happened by not denying it. Usually I’d say a leopard doesn’t change its spots and it’s madness to take back a husband who’s been unfaithful, but seeing how happy and together they are made me think maybe it’s not as black and white as that. It would have been crazy to throw away everything they’ve got for an attention seeking predatory woman and a huge mistake.

David is unbelievably good looking now, I think more so than he was when he was younger. That really struck me. I really like Victoria, who is also beautiful. I think she’s a very strong woman who loves him very much and he has a lot of respect and admiration for her. Which is why they’ve been able to weather all the many storms together. Lovely family.

I cried at the part when he played his last ever game, I can’t imagine how hard that must have been for him after so many years but lovely seeing him playing with his son at the end. Beautiful documentary.

TeamSleep · 05/10/2023 07:52

Oh and I couldn’t help but laugh at the part where the footballer he kicked in that huge World Cup drama in 1998 said it didn’t even hurt and he was hamming it up and that he didn’t think David should have got a red card. Bit late for that!!

Crumpetdisappointment · 05/10/2023 07:57

I might have to rejoin netflix, this looks fascinating.

Fulshaw · 05/10/2023 08:00

Nice couple who, like so many, have had a shit time at the hands of the press in the past.

MamaToABeautifulBoy · 05/10/2023 08:16

Going to watch this later. I don’t have a positive opinion on either of V or D. I find V odd and vacuous and D arrogant.

Did anyone feel the same but have their mind changed by the documentary? Entirely open to be completely wrong about both of them!

themessygarden · 05/10/2023 08:50

I changed my opinion on both of them.🙂

You have to hand it to them, the odds were stacked against them but they got through it.

Inkanta · 05/10/2023 08:55

The documentary started off with funny banter - between him and Victoria. "Tell the truth" - I am telling the truth - kind of thing. They dont take themselves too seriously. I warmed to them straight away.

EmmaPaella · 05/10/2023 09:03

I have only watched episode 1 so far but they seem a lovely couple who don’t take themselves too seriously despite how it may seem on camera. I didn’t think Victoria came across as vacuous/boring at all.

ShirleyPhallus · 05/10/2023 09:20

I watched it and really enjoyed it. The press in the 90s was nuts

ShirleyPhallus · 05/10/2023 09:20

And Gary Neville is very funny

Fulshaw · 05/10/2023 09:47

It’s an insight into the various obstacles they’ve overcome. It’s so, so easy to look at people like them and think they’re rich, successful, have no problems, they shouldn’t have anything to complain about. But this documentary shows they’re human beings, subject to the same hurts, doubts and worries as the rest of us.

BadBadDecisions · 05/10/2023 09:59

I'm watching episode 1 now.

I've never thought VB seemed vacuous at all; I think a lot of that stereotyping came about because she's very fashion conscious, unapologetically loaded ( I mean, what were they supposed to do with the millions) and pretty much kept her mouth shut because she knows she could never do right for doing wrong.

She seems pretty smart to me; pretty introverted, has built and maintained her family and businesses for decades while looking awesome. What's vacuous about that? That's a bullshit misogynist take.

TeamSleep · 05/10/2023 10:05

I read VBs autobiography when it first came out and have liked her ever since. From people who’ve met her and know her I’ve never heard a bad word said. I admired David as a footballer but I’m not into football at all and I didn’t have much of an opinion about him before watching this. After watching this I think they’re both great and I have a lot of admiration for them and what they’ve been through and stuck together through it. I get the feeling it’s a very normal, very fun family to be a part of.

Really?

If I had to name a celeb family who have always pushed their kids in front of the cameras it's the Beckhams! I think those kids' lives would have been much easier with a bit of anonymity.

Exactly! No one pimped out their family more than the Beckhams. David says in the documentary they weren't showing Brooklyn (just after he was born) as it would be up to him when he was older. Then in the next breath sells their wedding including Brooklyn to Hello.

He also says that the affair stuff 'was their private life'. That's the thing with the media, once you sell yourself and get into bed with them, it becomes quite difficult to pick and choose what the media list.
