A new series began tonight. Looks like more of the same: kitchen islands and eye-watering overspending ahead.

OP posts:

350K 😱

BruceAndNosh · 15/08/2023 20:58

Actually Lizzies living layout was better but I would have put it upstairs. I suspect Damiions would have been nightmare acoustically

thefemaleJoshLyman · 15/08/2023 21:01

I was disappointed this evening. I loved Damien's design but also felt that they didn't really do Lizzie's either.

Meredusoleil · 15/08/2023 21:04

I actually preferred the front of the house the way it originally was. Loved the clean straight lines and hated the black timber!

Also thought Damien's idea to flip the house upside down made more sense given the views and the staircase with double height window was seriously gorgeous.

Where were their stairs in the end? And did they get the utility room, downstairs shower room that was in Lizzie's plans?

Allchangename354 · 15/08/2023 21:15

Did I hear right that they lived there for three years before this make over. If the place wasn’t working due to disability move or do something! Maybe get a designer given the budget they had.

Depends why they wanted to see the pool. If it was safety then need to be close by to really make a difference.

MichaelAndEagle · 15/08/2023 21:53

I'm just catching up. Surely Damiens design is never going to be anywhere near the budget. I love the idea but its a total rebuild!!
Maybe they don't chose it, I haven't seen your posts yet!

MichaelAndEagle · 15/08/2023 22:03

OK they chose lizzie.

MichaelAndEagle · 15/08/2023 22:07

Ooh love the new exterior!!

I'm now the one talking to myself 😂

Yeah they didn't do the plan did they! A bit weird.
Maybe they just needed some inspiration.

I couldn’t really understand what they’d done with the downstairs, there’s no way the kitchen and that snooker room were the whole of the downstairs layout. It seemed weirdly broken up.

Having seen the view of the river from that front terrace I don’t understand why neither designer did something out the front.

I agree. It confused me too!

Hated the way the pool table stood right in the night window. Plus all the bold art work and wallpaper was very OTT imho. Must have been Lou's own work/taste?

Have noticed Damien seems a big fan of natural wood. As am I. Lived the herringbone parquet flooring be had in mind, including continuing it on the round staircase ❤️

themessygarden · 15/08/2023 23:27

I thought the rear of the house looked very impressive, didn't like what they did to the front exterior, although the planting was gorgeous.. However I think the interior still looked a bit disjointed, didn't appear to have any flow, couldn't figure out how much of Lizzie s' design they modified, but I think it was a lot, I hated the island wrapped around the pillar.. I loved Damians design, it had a much better connection to the exterior and the high beamed ceilings would have looked superb. I think that design would have really had the wow factor.

ThePoetsWife · 16/08/2023 05:51

Was disappointed they didn't go for Damien's design.

They ended up with a hugely expensive renovation without making the most of those stunning views.

That snooker table!!Confused

RumpleDumple · 16/08/2023 06:42

I preferred Damien's design but I understand why they went with Lizzy's. What I don't understand is why they pretty much did what they wanted. The end result was nothing g like Lizzie's design. They showed a bit of the kitchen and that window seat. Where was their living room? Utility room?

They mentioned they loved the cute steps in Lizzys deign then went for big concretey slab steps.

The end result was quite ugly and for soooo much money.

MrsJamin · 16/08/2023 07:49

I wasn't mad keen on this one. I think flipping it was the way to go but Damion seems to design with no awareness of budget or practical aspects like storage or functional spaces. Ideally they'd have flipped it but had some utility area - they'd have had to make sure the large spaces didn't make unnecessary echoes too. It was so ridiculous to have the double walkway. I'd be surprised if Damion ever designs normal spaces for normal families, they always seem too flashy.

PriamFarrl · 16/08/2023 08:36

My first thought was to turn it upside down, but then you’ve got a lot of work to do. Moving utilities and a complete change downstairs.

I like what they did but I agree that the living space seemed empty. A lot of space taken up by a snooker table.

Freshair1 · 16/08/2023 08:38

What does the children's deafness have to do with them not liking small rooms fgs.

Freshair1 · 16/08/2023 09:16

Thoughts: Lizzie choosing the exterior over anything internal shows what she thought of their work. Salty!
It looked amazing but we didn't see much of the functional spaces eg utility.
The couple basically ripped both designers off by incorporating elements, clever tho.
They're clearly loaded.
Would love more 'Mr Average has £20k to knock a kitchen through.'

They explained something along the lines of when they call each other the children have difficulty locating where Mum is calling from, they wanted sightlines. However, the children are old enough that they could resolve that by texting, surely?
It seems bonkers to design a house around that; I could understand designing around mobility problems (quite common) but not deafness (comparatively rare).

The budgets on YHMP are getting ridiculous.

Not comparatively rare, I think it's something like 1 in 7 have hearing loss of some degree. Having open spaces makes sense, I guess, less annoying than having to go from room to room to locate the voice.

senua · 16/08/2023 09:35

I think it's something like 1 in 7 have hearing loss of some degree.
That is skewed by the older generation. This is a family home and the statistics for children is more like one in a thousand.

ReviewingTheSituation · 16/08/2023 10:52

Just caught up now. The final house seemed to bear no resemblance whatsoever to Lizzie's design. A fundamentally different layout; front and back gardens different; double height windows which weren't there in the design, an upstairs living room not in the design... The window seat and the black cladding seem to be the only thing from the design!

The upside down design answered the brief perfectly and was SO MUCH better. I wonder why they didn't go for that.

EmmaChizzett · 16/08/2023 11:03

With the house as it is now, can they see the children in the pool from the kitchen? I thought that was one of the issues but the ground floor is still lower than the pool, isn't it?

I liked the upstairs living for the light, but Damion's design looked very expensive and grander than they needed.

RoadSignFool · 16/08/2023 11:25

Did you not notice the little comments between Lizzie and Ange about how it had been “a stressful build”? I reckon they fell out big time and had to put on a show for the reveal.

RoadSignFool · 16/08/2023 11:26

Lizzie and owners fell out I mean, not Lizzie and Angela!
