A new series began tonight. Looks like more of the same: kitchen islands and eye-watering overspending ahead.

OP posts:

Just caught up with this this morning. Laura's had to win because of the appropriately sized kitchen, the other kitchen design was so poky, just awful.

Freshair1 · 09/08/2023 08:48

The wallpaper was the best thing about the design. Absolutely stunning. I need it.

LadyEloise1 · 09/08/2023 09:17

For once neither architect's design wowed me. There were bits of both that were great and bits that weren't so good imo.
I really disliked the lilacy purple hallway. Depressing colour.
I also thought they could have levelled the floor
@CrossPurposes.
It appeared to be very overlooked on one side, I couldn't figure it out.
Were there any blinds or curtains on all those windows ?

Why would you worry about being overlooked? The top floor would overlook if they were in the garden. And who would be upstairs purposefully watching?

I agree. I think I would have liked a mixture of both tbh.

@Freshair1 ".....Why would you worry about being overlooked.....?"

I just like privacy. As does dh.
I'd hate a home with no blinds/ curtains.
Light too would be a factor - it would wake us in summer too early.

Freshair1 · 09/08/2023 10:37

I'd understand privacy if they were overlooked by a row of houses but it was only the one. Now to locate that wallpaper!

PriamFarrl · 09/08/2023 10:43

We never bother closing the blinds at the back of our house as we aren’t overlooked, but I agree that window coverings never seem to feature in any designs.

I thought their bedroom looked rather scrappy but I don’t think it was finished. There weren’t any skirting boards.

Halsall · 09/08/2023 12:37

I just thought it was strange that they kept raving about the very average (and yes, overlooked) courtyard - which they hadn’t done anything to in terms of nice planting etc - when they had a much more attractive big lawned garden. I’d much rather have overlooked that.

strawthatbrokethecamelsback · 09/08/2023 14:19

If anyone tracks down that wallpaper let me know 🙏

Yes I didn’t understand that. The huge lawn just they all went on about the small courtyard. I’d assumed that the grass area wasn’t theirs to start with.

MrsJamin · 09/08/2023 16:18

Laura said on instagram that it was from Rebel Walls but they have a vast catalogue, so I'm not sure of the exact one.

Freshair1 · 09/08/2023 16:25

Close but no. In the kitchen the base of the pattern had green hills.

Freshair1 · 09/08/2023 16:29

Oh my god yes!!!

MrsJamin · 09/08/2023 16:32

A pretty penny! That's £ 39.60 per m2, not roll!

strawthatbrokethecamelsback · 09/08/2023 19:27

Slightly off topic but this might be my new favourite obsession

I absolutely love this

Did anyone else think the kids would still try and climb over the banister at the top of the stairs to the mezzanine? 😱

CoolShoeshine · 09/08/2023 21:31

@Halsall totally agree about the courtyard! I’d have thought a better use of the space would have been to steal some of it to extend the kitchen and make the kitchen squarer. It was very narrow for such a big budget. and when spending all that money why not get the courtyard re paved? That lawn was idyllic though, overlooking the ponies.
Also hated the worktop being in front of the bifolds - it didn’t look like a feature from the outside it looked like a mistake.
Plus the mezzanine not great, would have been nice to leave the entire area above the living/dining space open to the beams. And I hated the tiny staircase although appreciate it would be fun for the kids. The parents aren’t going to have much quiet relaxation time though with that open playroom above them.
TBH I wonder if they’d get their money back if they sold - it seems a lot of expense for not a massive gain. If I was paying a lot for a country house I’d expect two living rooms at least plus a larger kitchen.

MichaelAndEagle · 09/08/2023 21:33

They could easily have just got rid of the playroom. Its not essential, and would have made it much better.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 09/08/2023 21:39

I didn’t spot a tv?

I didn’t spot a tv?

No, me neither. Was wondering where they'd put it!

PriamFarrl · 09/08/2023 21:51

I noticed there wasn’t one too. They can’t pretend they don’t watch it because they are on a sodding tv program.

BiliousOhGod · 09/08/2023 22:03

I just caught up tonight. It looked quite unfinished. Maybe the TV was still in the caravan! No view of the new master bathroom, or any of the other bedrooms. Fair enough, you may not want your kid's rooms on TV, but there was a guest room created... I'm assuming that there was a loo under the new staircase, off the boot room? Unless it was a general storage cupboard. Where do the ironing board and hoover go? Laura is usually so practical, it's unusual for her to have not had a utility and loo, especially in a family home. 28m is a long way to the toilet if you're a little kid!
