“2: There seemed to definitely something wrong with the sound quality of Mae’s song, she was drowned out by the music. But also I wasn’t sure about her vocals, sounded a bit flat once or twice.”

agree

WhotheHellisEdgar · 14/05/2023 13:15

I really like Austria and have changed my username in support 🇦🇹 😁
Really shocked it got such a low fan vote score 😔
Mae sounded off last night; there was no power in her voice, I thought maybe her mic was off, and I really don't think she gave as good as she could. I saw her on some interview on Friday and she said she was put on voice rest so maybe that's why??

The jury vote really screwed Finland out of that win. From the public votes - 18! countries gave Finland 12 points. Zero countries gave Sweden 12 points.
But 15 juries gave Sweden 12 points and only 2 juries gave Finland 12 points. So even though Finland got the most 12 points, they didn't win because the juries scored them so low. It really does feel rigged.

It’s not just about 12-pointers, though. Last year Sam Ryder clocked up 8 12-pointers 7 10-pointers and 8 8-pointers, scoring 283 overall. It all adds up.

But Sweden came second in the popular vote, it’s not like they were 6th or anything.

Exactly. I honestly would like to know what demographics liked Finland though. None of my friends (married females in their 40s/50s) did!
I think those who watch a lot of SM liked the bromance between the Finnish guy and another one (can't remember which one)...and campness (Finland) always a winner!
I'm glad there is a jury vote tbh. Used to be ONLY decided by a jury vote if anyone is old enough to remember ;)?!

PleaseJustText · 14/05/2023 13:31

I really didn't like the Swedish entry. My friends and I were texting each other during the jury vote and all wondering what on earth was going on.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/05/2023 13:31

Yes! I remember the days when it was juries only. Much more straightforward for Ireland
That's the guy from Slovenia with the Finnish guy.

RaraRachael · 14/05/2023 13:33

In all my many years of Eurovision watching that was the worst selection of songs I've ever heard. There wasn't one that I really liked.
The winning one was dreadful.

theTractorFactor · 14/05/2023 13:34

On a second watch of Mae Muller's song this morning, I like the Pop Art projections more but it's a really, really wordy song and if you don't speak English, her voice just isn't strong enough, or the staging explanatory enough, to stop your attention wandering until to the big chorus. And I couldn't make out half the lyrics; it sounded as if it was pitched slightly too low for her to sing comfortably - outside a studio, anyway. I can see how it would be hard for the casual viewer in Iceland or Macedonia to get behind it.

Loreen lost me at 'You're stuck on me like a tattoo'. That's not how tattoos work, Loreen. Unless your love is a bit temporary.

SwedishEdith · 14/05/2023 13:42

I saw a clip of Mae Muller singing At a rehearsal and it sounded weak then. I wonder whether she wasn't "trying hard enough" as a rehearsal but no, it wasn't a strong performance live. Interesting that a PP who was there said it was good.

I liked Portugal, Estonia and Moldova - can still hear that flute. Sweden's left me completely cold.

Heard Steve Rosenberg's piano rendition of I Wrote a Song and it's a really lovely melody.

I'm not a fan projections of the artist during Eurovision. Should be about the song not them. Reminded me of Blue's performance (who actually did well compared to recent UK placings, Ryder aside).

I didn't actually care as much this year. Liverpool hosting it brilliantly (went over twice) has been the win for me so someone else can have a go.

oops2 · 14/05/2023 13:48

So, those who liked Finland - please state your demographics please?

It wasn't a stand out year for sure. But M Mae and Loreen's song grows on you if you listen (rather than watch) to their songs. Sweden's song has entered in the global charts on Spotify and has been breaking streaming records so some people must like it.

oops2 · 14/05/2023 13:48

grow not grows

SheilaFentiman · 14/05/2023 13:50

I liked Finland, 40 something mum of two.

WhotheHellisEdgar · 14/05/2023 13:53

Finland was favoured in this house by DH (50) and DS 2 (16), once the cha-cha-cha gets into your head it's hard to get it out.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/05/2023 13:58

Finland grew on me. 49.
DD loved it. 19.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/05/2023 14:00

The French singer is denying giving the middle finger. It really looked like she was giving the middle finger.

EsmaCannonball · 14/05/2023 14:04

I'll be very disappointed if someone doesn't do a dance to Cha Cha Cha on Strictly this year. Industrial Gothic Hallowe'en Robots maybe?

I can also deny I’m fat. Doesn’t stop my arse sitting in size heifer drawers.

she so did

SocksAndTheCity · 14/05/2023 14:11

I liked Finland and I'm 50.

Although this morning all I've been singing is not 'cha cha ' but 'poe poe poe poe-poe poe' 😀

FrostyFifi · 14/05/2023 14:18

Can I please have a proud wife moment? DH worked on this, his name even popped up on the closing credits. He sent me a screenshot 😂

FrostyFifi · 14/05/2023 14:19

I liked Finland and I'm mid-forties.

I don't know what your DH did, but you should be proud! It was spectacular 🥳
In particular the staging & the change overs - those guys must have worked so hard over the past few weeks.

If he's Martin Oestrogen then we're all very jealous. If he had to deal with Croatia's grundies then ..... well, I'd make him wash his hands before he handles anything out of the fridge.
