Completely agree. If it's still going to be a song contest, it can't be left completely to the public, who often have shit taste, fall for chants and novelty and probably don't fully appreciate why one song is "better" than another.

But as Rita says, Sweden didn't showcase lyrical excellence. Rhyming "this is not the end" with "we will meet again" is in chapter 1 of writing a song.

The song was met with polite enthusiasm whenever I saw it performed (which was not the case for Euphoria - we all sang along to the winner's performance). Technically very competent, but the juries were very unimaginative to give it such a sweep of 12s.

Which is not to say Finland deserved those 12s - but I'd have liked to see more go to Estonia, Czechia, Israel etc. I was pleased to see Belgium and Australia pick up some 12s for what were just as competent (and far more interesting) selections.

No dealing with any grundies, Croatian or otherwise! He's a screen engineer (I'm sure that's not too outing? Like the endless mysterious "hobbies" that are always cycling).

FrostyFifi · 14/05/2023 14:35

Meant to say, work on the setup started right at the beginning of April (and the creative peeps and project managers will have spend months before that working hard) but I think they all did a great job, it was flawless and spectacular and I'm not just saying that because I'm biased.

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2023 14:38

Yes it was brilliantly done. I can't imagine the amount of work that went into it. Well done Liverpool.

I can also deny I’m fat. Doesn’t stop my arse sitting in size heifer drawers.

she so did

Lol.
The video footage only suggests one literal translation.

DH and I liked Finland, we are mid 50s. Our favourite was Belgium, and he looked so touched and grateful when he got a couple of the 12 points.

FrostyFifi · 14/05/2023 14:18

Can I please have a proud wife moment? DH worked on this, his name even popped up on the closing credits. He sent me a screenshot 😂

Absolutely. Well done to him and everyone who worked on the show. I really enjoyed it, particularly 'You'll never walk alone' which was the highlight for me.

Yes. I voted for Belgium too.

UglyModernWindows · 14/05/2023 14:55

I loved Finland! It had everything, trance, heavy metal, pop and very likeable artist.

I’m 50, mum of two teens and live in SE.

And I’m born & bread Finn Grin (naturalised Brit now).

DS1 (15) loved it too.

UglyModernWindows · 14/05/2023 14:58

My other favourites were Belgium, Slovenia, Australia and Germany. Love and Glitter didn’t deserve to be last!! And as much as it pains me to say it, I did like Sweden too.

I personally thougth there were many great songs this year! I usually only like one or two, not six or more.

Hongkongsuey · 14/05/2023 15:00

I loved Finland. Age 60. Definitely in the hilarious spirit of Eurovision. Will never get that human caterpillar out of my head…

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/05/2023 11:41

Yes, I think so. It's definitely a different experience when you listen to them.
Staging and performance has a lot to do with the success of a song on the night.

Yes and no.

The song has to be brilliant. And I think the artist has to perform it well and hit all the notes too. But I think that's always been the case.

Staging I think has been a big thing for a while. Heroes was a fab song but staging was a huge part of that too, and they actually cut back on that type of screen visuals for staging after that towards more prop type stuff again.

We've had props and dances for years. Think brotherhood of man and bucks fizz. You can't argue that staging wasn't important for them. Then you had verka and lordi. Again costumes and props.

However the thing with staging is it can throw off the singing. A breathy performance or missing notes cos you are too busy dancing or with the staging cos break you.

It's obviously got a lot more important in how you present but you have to get it right and do it well. And that's the same since year dot.

Two of my friends have worked this week with Eurovision related things. They are super proud and we're very impressed at the production yesterday (it's their field). Said it was one of the best things they ever done (and by god they've done some cool stuff).

I can honestly say it's one of the best productions / stage shows I've ever seen. And I've done a few.

So do be proud wife. He deserves it.

I am not looking forward to the come down this week. I have just dropped my friend back at the airport. And cried.

Was thinking about how Germany bombed. I think they suffered because there is normally just one act in the final which is heavy rock. This year you had Finland which covered that base to an extent AND Serbia also competing for that section of the vote.

So, those who liked Finland - please state your demographics please?

It wasn't a stand out year for sure. But M Mae and Loreen's song grows on you if you listen (rather than watch) to their songs. Sweden's song has entered in the global charts on Spotify and has been breaking streaming records so some people must like it.

Overall Finland came out best in our group. We had an 8 year old, 16 year old, 17 year old, 30 year old, 40 year old, two 45 year olds, a 48 year old and the other four 53 year olds.

So a big mix and not exactly young. Only one really disliked it.

Stressybetty · 14/05/2023 16:38

Sore head today! Am virtually intolerant to alcohol but unwisely risked it last night! Listening to Rylan and Scott's commentary from last night, much better than Mel's while tiling a floor

Tell your DH that he and everyone else did a stunning job. The UK song was nothing but the UK hosting was wonderful.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2023 16:51

Not even the Brits abroad voted for the UK

Because one can't vote for one's propre pays. They said it many times. Grin

You can if you are an ex-pat! They don't check your passport when you vote, it's just based on the geographical origin of the call/text message Grin

I'm sorry, having to wave a friend off will definitely make it harder. It's such a lovely distraction from, well, everything.

Tell your DH that he and everyone else did a stunning job. The UK song was nothing but the UK hosting was wonderful.

Thank you, I will. He's really into his job and gets genuinely thrilled if people get joy from the end result.

I thought the UK/Liverpool did a great job. I don't mind about the UK song not being great, loved the whole night, my joy would just have been complete had Finland won.

Apparently Italy's sparkly m&s gran vest was custom made for him by his friend Donatella Versace! Made with diamantes.

Natsku · 14/05/2023 17:07

Finland was robbed for sure, we better beat Sweden at ice hockey tomorrow to even things out.

I voted Austria, they should have got more votes, poor Poe

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2023 17:10

You can @90stalgia but it would be wrong. So so wrong. Grin
