I loved that Jane Hill was wearing a sequin jacket to read the news from Liverpool. I think the BBC after party is going to be messy!

90stalgia · 14/05/2023 00:22

Mel didn't really know when to talk and when to keep quiet, I thought.

Agreed. Someone should tell Mel that it’s not radio. She doesn’t need to fill all the spaces between the songs.

90stalgia · 14/05/2023 00:26

Appalonia · 14/05/2023 00:26

Ha I thought pp meant the Hot Chocolate song, no wonder I couldn't hear it!😂

😂

thedogisstaring · 14/05/2023 00:27

I tried phone voting for Finland over 40 times and it was call failed every time, DH managed to get his Norway vote in though.

I also liked Moldova.

Mel talked to much but her polish butter churning made me literally laugh out loud! I might get shot on MN but I thought the milkmaids of Poland sing all those years ago was brilliant!

ZittiEBuoni · 14/05/2023 00:27

I loved Norway, Finland and (randomly, apparently) Portugal.

Thought the UK song was much stronger than several that scored higher.

Berlinlover · 14/05/2023 00:28

Belgium was my favourite tonight.

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/05/2023 00:28

I'm watching Sam Ryder Rocks - he's brilliant, but I can't stay awake until after 1am.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 14/05/2023 00:30

RitaCrudgington · 14/05/2023 00:24

The juries were never going to vote for Finland - it's exactly the sort of performance that goes down big with the viewing public but not with the "excellence in songwriting" juries.

Agree with this.

He's doing Stevie Wonder now! I'm going to watch the rest of it and have a bit more sofa dancing before bed 🥳

This is probably a dumb question, but who decided that there would be a 'Big Five' who automatically go through and how does it work? I'm sure I've seen it explained but I can't remember.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 14/05/2023 00:32

I liked the recorded UK song and the staging but something didn’t go right with her sound in the live performance and so it couldn’t get the points. Sweden were always the favourites and they will put on a good show next year.

Appalonia · 14/05/2023 00:32

Sam is singing Stevie Wonder now, you can tell he really loves music and performing!

Lysianthus · 14/05/2023 00:32

@90stalgia totally agree, she was talking over Graham and Hannah and I'd have thought there'd be a better script.
Anyway, thought Australia were fab.
And agree about the Sweden 50 ....

RedToothBrush · 14/05/2023 00:34

On the plus side.
Road trip from the Netherlands to Malmö is doable.

Plus Måns. Just Måns.
Did I say Måns?

Had a fab night here ... Kitchen is a bombsite. DH and his mate are smashed. (Conchita made a guest appearance during the evening...)

I thought I wasnt too bad, but I've just sat down to the room spinning slightly.

DS has just gone to bed wailing 'worst Eurovision ever'. Just like last year. Last year he cried at the Wolves not winning. This yes, it's Croatia that's broken the poor lads heart.

Liverpool was like nothing else. Such a wonderful atmosphere.

Lithuania stole my dress.
And now it's time for bed and crossing fingers for Malmö over Stockholm.

Me and my Dutch friend are up for going next year now... We shall see. If nothing else I think I will try and make it to the Netherlands...

Till next time. X

I think the big five pay a lot of money into the European Broadcasting Union.

Mindovermatter247 · 14/05/2023 00:18

Convenient Sweden won, so it will be hosted there next year on no other than the 50th anniversary of abba winning… little bit sus if you ask me 🧐

It was one of the most (if not the most) streamed songs of the competition in the last few weeks

frankgu · 14/05/2023 00:38

Just caught up. I thought the UK wasn't that bad but her voice didn't sound strong enough. Thought Loreen was the best by far. Didn't rate Israel or Italy.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 14/05/2023 00:40

Me too. Portugal and Norway were my top two, then Finland.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 14/05/2023 00:41

Blimey Sam Ryder is way better than I’d realised. Not a bad crack at Stevie Wonder songs. He’s a real Performer isn’t he?

thecatsthecats · 14/05/2023 00:42

RitaCrudgington · 14/05/2023 00:24

The juries were never going to vote for Finland - it's exactly the sort of performance that goes down big with the viewing public but not with the "excellence in songwriting" juries.

Our jury includes such musical heavyweights as Heidi from the Sugababes.

I think the juries fundamentally underscore performance and engagement as parts of the song.

I'm on a train back from Liverpool right now, and NOBODY is singing Loreen - that wasn't the case for Euphoria.

Is anyone else still obsessed by Kalush? My 6 year old absolutely loves their music. A few Ukrainian refugees have joined his school and he is very interested in their culture. We often listen to Kalush in the car

WeAreTheHeroes · 14/05/2023 00:43

@SocksAndTheCity - the EBU is the organisation that organises Eurovision. At some point the big five have said that going straight through to the grand final is proportionate to their financial contribution. If you're putting in more money you want to guarantee your home audience can support their own act.

I don't think I'll ever tire of Spaceman. I was in a large store in Manchester earlier today when it was played on their sound system. I swear everyone quietened down and was listening to it.

FlamingoCroquet · 14/05/2023 00:44

Agree that Mae's vocals weren't strong enough live, but there was some utter dross that scored higher than her. I was glad Loreen won, such a strong voice, and like a performer in her own right, not a contestant. I also liked the Czechia feminist anthem! Raised fists at the end and all! Hope they play that song in Iran and Afghanistan.
Oh and - Catherine Tate - she was pissed surely! Hilarious!

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2023 00:44

Hi thought you had all gone to bed. I'm watching Sam

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 14/05/2023 00:44

Found our song bit bland and didn't sound good. Least didn't get 0 though!

Mel was bad..least she won't be doing the votes and that next year!!

Seems a shame Loreen won as she already has..and it seems bit hmmmm with next year being Abba anniversary and all. Oh well..
