It's logical :) I liked reading the twitter thread, @SwedishEdith interesting and he is right about the dominance of winning songs in minor keys.

Well everything does sound better in a minor key

Reading about how the juries decide has really made me think differently about them, would not want to get rid of them now.

Those who liked Cha Cha Cha, has it made you interested in listening to any other Finnish music? Because there is some great stuff here, my personal favourite being Tankeros Love which is a brilliant example of 'rallienglanti'

Looks like he's done another song by song analysis for this year @FuzzyCaoraDhubh, so I will have to read later.

And just spotted this about the Australian lead singer 😃

😁loved that band.

Great. I'll look it up later.

Voyager are touring Europe later this year, with at least one date in the UK.

I love Kimmo Pohjonen, especially Kluster. I also have an album of Finnish Folk that I bought one night after a few too many ciders and coming home to find Late Junction on (often responsible for impulse musical purchases) - Suistamon Sahko was the one that made me do it this one! Incidentally, on the subject of musical snobbery, Georgia Mann on R3 yesterday (who was at the final) wasn't impressed with Sweden and her oversized sunbed either and thought Finland were robbed. So ner!

Everything sounds better in a minor key.
I've always thought so, but Katrina And The Waves' song 'Shine a Light' is such a good happy tune all the same.

I listened to a bit of Kimmo Pohjonen, StarryGazeyEyes and I really liked the album with the Kronos Quartet ('Uniko'). Thanks for sharing:)* *

Kylie's new tune sounds very Eurovision Padang Padam

JaneJeffer · 18/05/2023 17:53

Padam Padam that should say

I've spoken to a few friends since the weekend and have realised something that makes a lot of sense of the staging.

Last year in Italy they had TERRIBLE staging issues. You couldn't move for production crews whinging about the shit show.

Ours was much better, and much slicker - but I think a lot of acts got burned last year when it came to staging and lighting, because of the last minute changes required. Hence less ambitious use of a very strong set up.

One thing was slightly more practical about the Italy set up - the lowered stage front meant that it didn't intrude if they didn't use it. But the long tongue of the stage wasn't always fully utilised by acts, but was sort of in the way as a result.

I thought that Serbia actually made the best use of the available staging - especially in the arena. I was worried for Belgium and pleased they did well, because I thought the videography didn't do the whole act justice.

So who wasn't ambitious enough this year then?

Cos I'm struggling to work out who this really applies to.

Austria's performance is possibly the one that springs to my mind - the way it was recieved in the arena was wildly different to the tv. But they could really have made a lot more of the dance WITHOUT the need for staging at all. Croatia are the really good example of how you can do a lot with little. Yes they DID use the big screens but really they were still mainly down to those costumes over everything.

And tbh I think Austria's biggest two problems were their position in the running order and the clip that was used for the recap - which really didn't capture the song well.

Nor can you argue that the UK, Germany or France didn't go all out for staging. Yet they bombed particularly hard. Moldova really made good use of the stage - again that pretty much bombed.

Ukraine which did well had the best staging of the night. Finland definitely went for the staging too. And Australia put a flipping car on stage.

As for the stage itself - I don't think the design of the shape of stage compared to Italy really was an issue to anyone but those on the arena floor. For everyone else, the fact it was another screen just added to the effect.

JaneJeffer · 18/05/2023 20:53

I think the U.K. could have incorporated some of the imagery from the music video like the dolls house for instance.

Appalonia · 18/05/2023 23:30

Still think Belgium should have won, just love this song! 😁😁😁

That and Cha Cha Cha are the only ones I've downloaded. Proper gay club anthem. Heaven dance floor would have been filled circa 1990.

Looked up Kimmo Pohjoinen, saw he was an accordionist - that was not the accordion music I was expecting! Different, and quite interesting.

StarryGazeyEyes · 19/05/2023 11:16

He definitely isn't your average folky accordionist! I find his music mesmerising - the album he did with Kronos Quartet mentioned by Fuzzy a few posts back is really excellent.

I love it. It's right up my street.

I do love folky accordion music but I liked his version too.

Help please!

Someone posted a link to a video of the scene changes which I want to send to a friend (another I haven't watched eurovision for years - its so different) as I was telling her about the effort that went into the staging for each song.

I have tried searching through, and dont think I imagined it, but just cant see it.

If it was you or you have the link can you re-post?

Loreen (Sweden) No2
Käärijä (Finland) No6

And....
Eurovisionwinner 'Tattoo' by Loreen obviously took up residency at the top after its Melodifestivalen win in March. But today, the Swedish singles chart has a new number 1. Eurovision runner-up 'Cha Cha Cha' by Käärijä!

WeAreTheHeroes · 20/05/2023 05:22

Outside the Top 10, "Who the Hell is Edgar" is in the top 50.
