I don't understand why Austria and Australia did so badly in the public votes. They were top 2 for me!

Same, catchy songs and good stage performance

I agree about the performances but disagree about the songs.

JediIsMyMaster · 14/05/2023 01:34

I was listening to a few of the songs on Spotify, and Loreen’s song was much better in the recorded version. I think they said the juries judge on a different performance to the live show, so she may have performed better in that one - today may just have been an off her face day

RedToothBrush · 14/05/2023 01:35

Catherine Tate was on something. We speculated about whether it was alcohol or something else. But it wasn't a good look. It's fucking embarrassing. Is it really that hard to moderate if you are doing that for Eurovision?

Mae Muller just isn't a good enough artist for Eurovision. She cant sing. We need to tighten up on this issue

night all p

BadNomad · 14/05/2023 02:49

Catherine Tate was doing a bit. She was taking the piss of old Eurovision and how it used to take countries so long to announce their scores and the need for it to be in French too. I'm surprised so many people didn't see it that way and thought she was drunk.

Deathraystare · 14/05/2023 07:22

I liked Finland and Norway i liked Australia too. The checha girls . Hated Israel. France sounded nice but not enough to win. Ours was not good enough and the decision to wear black was wrong.

EsmaCannonball · 14/05/2023 07:25

The first question the UK should ask itself when choosing next year's act is 'Could this person bring down Wembley Stadium?' They need stage presence and confidence and a very, very strong voice.

They should just ask themselves 'is this boring shite?'

Catherine tate was embarrassing whether she was doing a skit or not. If it was a skit it wasn't funny and hardly any one got it. Even the off the wall announcers from other countries were polished and well spoken. We were hosting the event and she turned up an absolute state.

Willmafrockfit · 14/05/2023 07:40

i thought perhaps we didnt want to win so we would have to host it again.

I think it's likely that in both the jury and the public vote, there's an element of 'they've had their turn' where the host country is concerned. It's nearly 30 years since a host country has won it.

frankgu · 14/05/2023 07:49

I thought Catherine Tate was taking the piss, Graham & Hannah seemed to get that too. Didn't think she was on something or drunk!

BadNomad · 14/05/2023 07:52

The UK never really recovered after Afghanistan. Europe has never been the same towards us. Sam won people over last year because he seems like a nice guy and his PR was great. But Europe still hates the UK.

frankgu · 14/05/2023 07:52

Why the love for Finland?! I thought it was crap!!

It was but its also classic Eurovision.
I quite liked Noway but thought the overall the show was a bit weak.

BadNomad · 14/05/2023 07:53

France is so salty. I love it. Did you see her give the finger when they heard the public votes? 😂

OublietteBravo · 14/05/2023 07:59

We much preferred last year - seeing the U.K. consistently getting jury points was amazing! This year normal service was resumed (deservedly given our performance).

Let’s hope they send someone who can sing live next year. We need to be more Italy. I’d actually like to see something like a six-person make voice choir singing in Welsh.

PuppyMonkey · 14/05/2023 08:01

Finland were super entertaining, would have loved them to win. Sweden were great and not surprised she won but I found her a bit smug and above it all and boring.

Nobody can blame UK’s bad score on “Europe hates us” anymore, not since Sam Ryder came second last year. We just need a good song and a good performer, then people vote.

I thought Mae’s song was ok, thought it might do well because it was upbeat etc, but that’s the first time I’ve heard her do it live and she just didn’t have the voice or the stage presence.

Sam should have entered again for the UK with that song he did in the interval.

frankgu · 14/05/2023 08:04

Did you see her give the finger when they heard the public votes?

Nope, she looked annoyed though 😆

OublietteBravo · 14/05/2023 08:05

Really interesting to see the results of the semis. Latvia only just missed out in SF1 (with Serbia the 10th qualifier).

Willmafrockfit · 14/05/2023 08:11

we didnt have the winning tune,
it sounded eurovisiony but it had the wrong vibe

Willmafrockfit · 14/05/2023 08:11

i can see still Sam Ryder's last year's almost winner, it was brilliant.

Willmafrockfit · 14/05/2023 08:11

still sing !

Have you seen the translation of the Finnish song? I only realised because we had the subtitles on last night.

It is the perfect party song:

This exhausting week and the many long days are behind
There’s only bar and piña colada on my mind
There is some time for a few, the night is still youngish
This icy shell is something I have to demolish

Holding on the drinks with both hands tied on them like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha, no
There’s no tomorrow when I grab a pint tightly like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha, no
Wanna mess my head up and to free my mind of fear like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha, no
And I stay on this seat until I have to climb off it like a

A couple piña coladas I have devoured
Yet the expression I have on my face is sour, yeah yeah ye ye yeh
There is some time for a few, the night is still youngish
This icy shell is something I have to demolish
The floor is calling me when I’m no longer so frozen
Like a cha cha cha I am approachin’

Holding on the drinks with both hands tied on them like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha, no
There’s no tomorrow when I grab a pint tightly like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha, no
Wanna mess my head up and to free my mind of fear like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha, no
And I stay on this seat until I have to climb off it like a whoa

I head towards the dance floor
Like a cha cha cha
And this world ain’t making me scared no more
Like a cha cha cha
When Champagne all over myself I pour

Cha cha cha
One eye keeps turning crossed too far
And talking is so hard when this different side of me does its part
Cha cha cha
I don’t usually go and drop my guard, not me
But now I am that guy, now I am that guy
I head towards dance floor
Like a cha cha cha
And this world ain’t making me scared no more
Like a cha cha cha
When Champagne all over myself I pour

Like a cha cha cha
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha aa-aah
Like a cha cha cha
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha

I think the problem was more that Mae had the wrong notes...

I actually don’t think it’s surprising if a lot of European countries have a bit of a negative feeling about the UK. If you do something as disruptive to your neighbours as pulling out of the EU, it’s not going to make people feel great about you. As proved last year, people will vote for good songs and good performances but people not feeling v positive about your country will have an impact. I thought the UK this year was classic middle-of-the-table stuff and didn’t deserve to be so low - but in a sea of mediocre crap, people will probably feel more positively about mediocre crap from places they like.
