I'm delighted. I've been telling people all week that Loreen would win and I think she's a worthy winner. Our entry got exactly what it deserved.

I liked the recorded UK song and the staging but something didn’t go right with her sound in the live performance and so it couldn’t get the points. Sweden were always the favourites and they will put on a good show next year.

Agree, the sound balance seemed off and she was too quiet

I agree. The production/staging of the live song was awful. Perhaps because Mae isn't experienced enough to do it well. The recorded video version much better. It wasn't the second worst song of the night though.

IwantToRetire · 14/05/2023 00:45

I got this from local Liverpool paper doing live reporting, and I think 2 countries are missing, but this is the audience vote based on that:

Finland 376
Sweden 243
Norway 216
Israel 185
Italy 174
Croatia 112
Poland 81
Moldova 76
Belgium: 55
Armenia: 53
France 50
Lithuania: 46
Slovenia 45
Czechia: 35
Switzerland 31
Estonia 22
Australia: 21
Austria: 16
Serbia 16
Germany 15
UK 9
Spain : 5

Maybe Sweden did get the vote because of Abba's 50th next year, but based on reporting earlier in the week, the Swedish singer whose name I've already forgotten is considered "very professional" and her light display " very sophisticated". So music insiders were voting for one of their own.

ie if the jury vote is very different to the audience / consumer vote.

I think maybe the juries dont get the eurovision vibe!

I thought cha, cha, cha would win, as did the audience in the auditorium (I think) by their chanting.

(Disclaimer - have no idea why I sat up to watch it - but once you start its hard to stop. Shame the UK entrant wasn't able to project her voice live as her recorded voice implied she could.)

frankgu · 14/05/2023 00:49

Agree that Mae's vocals weren't strong enough live, but there was some utter dross that scored higher than her

agree her song is very catchy, I can't remember some of the others. Spain hurt my ears!

FangedFrisbee · 14/05/2023 00:50

The Croatian song remind of a slower version of Victoria Woods 'it's Friday night I'm going out im right excited'

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2023 00:50

Spain must be the worst song ever in Eurovision history.

frankgu · 14/05/2023 00:51

😆

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2023 00:51

Justin Hawkings woo hoo

SheilaFentiman · 14/05/2023 00:56

Thanks @IwantToRetire so the top 5 was the same, I think, jury and public? Just a different order.

Kernackered · 14/05/2023 00:59

FlamingoCroquet · 14/05/2023 00:44

Agree that Mae's vocals weren't strong enough live, but there was some utter dross that scored higher than her. I was glad Loreen won, such a strong voice, and like a performer in her own right, not a contestant. I also liked the Czechia feminist anthem! Raised fists at the end and all! Hope they play that song in Iran and Afghanistan.
Oh and - Catherine Tate - she was pissed surely! Hilarious!

They were my favourite. Strong message, strong look. Do you know what that gesture means though? I've seen it before, isn't it something like a signal that I am not safe / being abused? Wish they did better.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2023 01:02

We love the Czechia entry. Shame the the insta-faced one from Israel did so well. Complete opposite. Porny nonsense.

ZittiEBuoni · 14/05/2023 01:02

I liked Spain! I like when a country is true to its culture rather than blanding out trying to appeal to all tastes.

Also agree about Czechia. I thought it was a strong message and beautifully sung and performed.

IwantToRetire · 14/05/2023 01:03

@SheilaFentiman - your right! I was so caught up in thinking it was a fix, that in fact they are quite the same. Time to go to bed.

Yeah I disliked her so much, I think she got through to 2nd on her looks and political nonsense rather than the music as to the life of me I can't remember her song.

Stuckinthemiddle1990 · 14/05/2023 01:05

Very very late to the party...was on a hen do. Why the love for Finland?! I thought it was crap!!

0nloop · 14/05/2023 01:06

Seriously the acts of Austria and the uk and Sweden are the only memorable songs for me - everything else I forgot after a minute.

SocksAndTheCity · 14/05/2023 01:07

Thanks @WeAreTheHeroes ; I suspected it was a way for countries to buy their way in, and it seems I was right.

I enjoyed the Spanish song too @ZittiEBuoni and for the same reason - I do like flamenco though and I enjoyed the traditional singing blended into it.

Bedtime now before I get too.this next TOTP thing (or whatever it is) 😴

OK, things you need to be a great Eurovision song IMO:

Crazy costume
In your own language
Camp or insane in some way
Big stage set or performance
Confidence
From a relatively neutral or popular country
Last and least, a good song

Check, check, check.

I called FInland. I think Belgium were robbed based on similar criteria.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2023 01:10

The Spanish song didn't build, it didn't have a hook and it didn't drop. Bland.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 14/05/2023 01:14

Ginmuffin · 14/05/2023 00:43

Is anyone else still obsessed by Kalush? My 6 year old absolutely loves their music. A few Ukrainian refugees have joined his school and he is very interested in their culture. We often listen to Kalush in the car

That's lovely. I don't know their other songs but will look them up.

Agreed completely.

Still thought it was crap though!

Loreen was a given. Nowhere near as good as Euphoria though.

Was listening to Fairytale by Alexandar Rybak earlier. Now that was an absolute winner 🏆

So bad UK did so bad after last year. If anyone hasn't seen Sam Ryder on Scott Mills with the curry...please watch now!

ZittiEBuoni · 14/05/2023 01:18

I do think Sam Ryder is a cut above this year's offering...he's clearly an excellent musician.

Same. The first time I heard it, I knew it'd be unbeatable. It's so nice when the winner is the one you were cheering on.

Sweden was my #1 but I also loved Norway, Serbia, Czechia and Moldova.

Cha Cha Cha is bafflingly overrated and the fans seem quite loco-loco. There, I said it.

InWalksBarberalla · 14/05/2023 01:24

I don't understand why Austria and Australia did so badly in the public votes. They were top 2 for me!
