Eurovision was being streamed to the US for the first time

I really REALLY hope they don't let the USA join though. They'll take over and change it.

No need to be snarky! As someone who hasn't watched for decades, and didn't follow any of the lead up, why would I know that.

But again, what a turn around.

I wonder what US music fans made of it. Not like much (that I am aware of) that seems popular in North America.

It has always seemed a bit quirky, but very european.

Wasn't it first started to try and stop pop charts etc., being swamped by US imports?

Also

Thanks for the replies re singer of You Never Walk Alone - as you say quite a tear jerky because of so many associations - but also a reminder of how much Liverpool has contributed to music in the UK - and the world!

Next year Globalvision?

awaynboilyurheid · 14/05/2023 20:12

We call it I wrote a boring song in this house so not surprised she did badly
we liked all liked Sweden, but I also liked Belgium. Thought Graham and Hannah were superb, Mel isn’t as funny as she thinks she is and agree too much chattering going on, however the production was fantastic.
I didn’t like the singers doing Liverpool songs and Sonia was poor, but the exception to this was the song, you’ll never walk alone, thinking of poor Ukraine it couldn’t have been more apt. 🇺🇦

DH has watched it with Americans who watched online before now. They are somewhat bewildered by it. But love it. However they tend to be a certain type of American anyway who have a lot of European online friends.

I am not sure the culturally the Americans would cope with entering and getting null points as they are so used to winning everything.

The idea of America joining seems much stranger than Australia - maybe because Australia are a Commonwealth country.

I can't really imagine the USA competing with a gloriously bonkers song; I could see them entering a highly polished Country & Western number, though, with an OTT Dolly Parton type vocalist, and I could see that being a vote winner.

IwantToRetire · 14/05/2023 20:29

Yes please - Dolly Parton taking part in Eurovision!

Dolly is the right tone. KLF and Tammy Wynette kind of thing. But I don't think they can be trusted with nice things. It's such an odd and special thing.

thecatsthecats · 14/05/2023 20:31

Loreen performance really did nail all those elements. It looked like a perfect music video except on stage and sung live. It was the height of professionalism. None of the other acts had that.

I think that's sometimes hard for the public to wrap their heads aroun d.

Ironically, I think this puts a finger on the reason why a lot of people found the song bland. Whether you were in the arena (I was in the semi), or watching on TV, it felt like watching a video.

Which is obviously technically hard to pull off, but also quite anaemic in terms of making a connection.

As I said before, I have been to countless Eurovision shows - at home, abroad, in public. I've never seen a winner's song be performed and NOBODY sing along before. I've also never seen an audience reaction like the one to Cha Cha Cha. Not even for Kalush, when I saw them win in Italy.

🎤They're justified, and they're aaaancient and they drive an ice cream van🎤😃

I agree.

I'm yet to speak to any Eurovision fans who has said they love Tattoo. Think it's good but they don't love it. It's also not exactly easy to sing along too apart from wailing 'oooahoooo'.

Cha cha cha will probably go the way of Verka and be one of those songs that came second and became an absolute classic to be hauled out every year. (Points to anyone who can remember the winner in the year Verka came second...)

Anyway the good thing about Tattoo winning is I should get plenty of MÃ¥ns and that's no bad thing in my book.

Agreed. Plus, I'm pregnant, so definitely will be at home next year, so it doesn't matter to me which hideously expensive Scandinavian country hosts it.

I have more overthought gripes with Tattoo the more I think about it though!

It's lyrically shallow.

It's emotionally shallow. (All I care I about is loooooove - grow up, you sulky teenager, there's a war on)

And once I realised that Loreen styled herself after the hermit in the Life of Brian, I couldn't unsee it. She even moves like him. She doesn't look like someone desperate to be reunited with her lover, she looks like she's been sat in a cave eating the dirt from under her nails.

My friends were saying she was dressed as a zombie from The Mummy, and her costume got slashed by those nails. They were not kind about her.

I have to say I am surprised at how old she is though. I thought she was older than me.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/05/2023 21:13

I just couldn't understand how she could go to the loo with those nails.

Mae Muller's weren't much better.

I couldn't get over the close up of them which is part of her staging and think how unattractive they were.

LOL. I am totally hearing this in Tammy Wynette's voice. Grin

DannyZukosSmile · 14/05/2023 22:45

Also.

The more I hear (and play) the Finnish entry, the more I love it, and wish it had won. 🎶 Cha Cha Cha Cha Cha Cha! 🎶 👯

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2023 22:54

On the BBC News after Eurovision last night they spoke to an American woman and I found her preaching to Europeans about how the 2012 Swedish changed Eurovision forever really annoying.

Cattenberg · 15/05/2023 00:29

Yeah, I don’t think America are the right fit for Eurovision. They would take it in a new direction and it wouldn’t be Eurovision any more.

Ducatifan · 15/05/2023 08:41

I’ve been away all weekend so didn’t see anything. What happened to the UK to come so low or, back to where we usually are? I didn’t love our song but it was better than most. How did we come second bottom? We were top 5 earlier in the week according to the polls.

MeinKraft · 15/05/2023 09:07

@Ducatifan the song was crap, the performance was crap. The singer didn't even have much support at home - GB news has been reporting on tweets she's made saying she hates Britain and apparently she's planning on moving to Germany Confused

oops2 · 15/05/2023 10:01

I didn't think our entry was that bad. Quite a catchy tune when you hear it on the radio but Molly's performance wasn't perhaps optimal. Saying that, I did struggle to hear lyrics clearly from many of the performers on the night.

Some not very nice comments about appearance/looks here saying Molly and Loreen were 'unattractive'. Quite harsh and either way untrue. I, for one (and I'm older), would have killed to have a figure like Loreen at 39!!

Liked the Finnish refrain, cha cha cha, but not so much the rest of the song. Norway was good, Belgium and France too but Sweden is the song is a real hit when you listen to it on the radio, and one I will choose to repeat on Spotify.

This shows what a huge industry Eurovision has become, with so much more pressure on youngsters who want to launch their careers.
