Wow, @BlackAmericanoNoSugar, that looks great! What a lovely fabric.

I can barely thread a needle, but do enjoy watching experts at work. Asmaa has a head start as a surgeon, I imagine - neat sewing, organised, and calm under pressure!

viques · 24/05/2023 22:22

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar

its gorgeous, I love the fabric and your pattern matching is amazing. They said they are looking for next years intake, go for it, lots of time to practise and a ready made fan base to gee you on.

FriendsDrinkBook · 24/05/2023 22:53

It's lovely to see Vicki doing well , I've been following her on insta for a while. She makes beautiful dresses and shirts. Asmaa's dress was so beautiful , really classy. She's very stylish and I look forward to seeing whatever else she makes.

The right person went , but it must be horrid to be the first to go.

Swimwear next week! A lot can go wrong with that , I forsee some stretched underarms , as that strap binding can be hard to get right.

Great to see sewing bee back and thank you for the thread.

Clymene · 24/05/2023 22:57

Catherine was the right person to go and I thought her falling apart crying was really annoying. She's an adult and everyone else lost time finishing their stuff to help her.

Asmaa is a really, really good seamstress.

Think Gillie will go next and Maria soon.

MouseMinge · 24/05/2023 22:58

I was sad to see Catherine go because I took to her and hoped for some interesting stuff but she had a mare and it was right that she went. I wasn't keen on the garment of the week, I thought that Asmaa's was so much better. She's pretty amazing.

SoupDragon · 24/05/2023 23:00

I think it probably came down to the fact that Asmaa's gaped at the cut out and Tony's didn't.

FriendsDrinkBook · 24/05/2023 23:01

@SoupDragon I agree - Tony's execution was better.

SoupDragon · 24/05/2023 23:04

I think his dress would have been nicer in a plainer fabric.

longtompot · 24/05/2023 23:08

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar that is some spot on pattern matching. I'd be shouting that from the roof tops too! Looking up the pattern now.

Gillie annoyed me with her 'come hither' about her second make. Loved Asmaas dress, just a shame the fit wasn't as tight as it needed to be. I really loved the blue/purple linen dress of the three made from the same pattern, but it was far too low at the front. I hope punk shirt guy has more up his sleeve than what he has done so far, though could say the same about a few of them.
A lovely, friendly, supportive group so far. Looking forward to next weeks.

NutellaEllaElla · 25/05/2023 06:25

Can't believe I forgot to watch it last night. I was enjoying my quiet time too much! Will have to catch up today.

florentina1 · 25/05/2023 11:37

it seemed that quite a few of them were off with their measurements. Lots of gaping around the cut outs.

CwmYoy · 25/05/2023 12:00

So happy to see it back.

Asmaa is my favourite so far.

Hottoffeesauce · 25/05/2023 12:54

Just watched on catch up. Can't stand all the 'harness' stuff. I liked garment if the week. The 'right' person went home ☹️

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/05/2023 13:00

I think that a lot of contestants struggle with the time constraints. At home making a garment takes as long as it takes, ss they're not working to a deadline. I think Catherine had this issue.
I wonder if we'll have another doctor win . All that stitching up skin most give them a head start !

HappiDaze · 25/05/2023 14:37

They really should have a bit more time as none of them are professional

Rowanandremy · 25/05/2023 15:14

Just finished watching (dd had a terrible fever last night so couldn’t watch). They all seem like a really friendly lovely bunch.

I wasn’t a massive fan of the transformation challenge bondage shirt, a bit surprised it came first.

So far I’m really liking Vicki and Lizzie, Lizzie’s made to measure dress was lovely and I really liked the fabric she used.

I felt a bit sorry for Catherine because I did like the overall look of her made to measure dress but she vastly overestimated the time she had which I think is a common mistake for the first few weeks. It must be quite a big adjustment going from sewing at home at your leisure to the pressures of a time challenge.

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar your dress looks fabulous! The pattern matching is superb, I’d be shouting that achievement out from the rooftops.

SoupDragon · 25/05/2023 15:14

The time is part of the challenge though. Anyone who can sew can make a decent garment if they have enough time.

I agree and it's one reason I wouldn't apply. Also I think putting sleeves in upside down is a really weird mistake to make if you have ever put sleeves in before. Back to front is easy to do but to put the sleeve seam at the top is bizarre and the shapes wouldn't go together.

Rowanandremy · 25/05/2023 15:44

@Soupdragon I agree that the time is part of the challenge and yet every year it’s that which consistently throws people off. Personally I’d be practicing sewing to a similar time limit if I was accepted on the show but that’s just me and my general anxiety at the thought of having to sew quickly.

I couldn't work that out either. Getting them on the wrong side would be an easy mistake but upside down?

SoupDragon · 25/05/2023 16:12

I made a jacket recently. The instructions were crap and, as I worked through it, I thought "I could go on Sewing Bee!". Except it took me over a month to make 😂

FriendsDrinkBook · 25/05/2023 16:52

I'd be like Damien if I went on , I 'go rogue' and ignore the instructions more than I care to admit.

I think Gillie was doing that. She didn't really follow the brief. Her dress was nice but the cut outs were invisible.

I liked Gillie’s dress but as you said the cut outs were near invisible and far too small. She did say that her practice ones were far
larger and gaped so I think she became over cautious.

FriendsDrinkBook · 25/05/2023 18:22

Yes , Gillie really didn't embrace the challenge. A bit like when Christian chose stretch fabric for a bias cut dress. She was lucky that Catherine had a worse day.
