3 photos attached. 1 shows front of skirt, 1 shows back with clasp done up, 1 shows clasp undone so you can see fastening. It's a lazy way of doing a skirt as just 1 seam up the back no zips or buttons and you just make a waist band double width you want plus seam allowance and a bit wider than waist so some overlap. I started making skirts like this as a student but they hang well in silk and mean no waste or pattern matching needed

Beautiful and brilliantly simple @2Rebecca

You should go on the show Grin

2Rebecca · 15/06/2023 23:14

No I'd be rubbish at doing things on time and the middle challenge

MoltenLasagne · 15/06/2023 23:18

That looks beautiful @2Rebecca ! Is it pleated? I now want to go buy some Liberty silk to try it out but would never have the occasion to wear it.

ArcaneWireless · 15/06/2023 23:24

In awe.

I can only sew on buttons and can just about do a wonky hem.

BestIsWest · 15/06/2023 23:37

Oh that takes me back @2Rebecca. When I was an older teenager in the early 80s I’d go to town on a Saturday and come back with a bit of fabric and DM would run me up a skirt just like that to wear out onSaturday night. She was a brilliant sewer. Later on I learned to do them myself but I haven’t made anything for years. I did cut out some fabric to make a tiered skirt earlier today based on a dress I bought.

2Rebecca · 16/06/2023 00:12

Yes it's pleated, on this skirt I did larger pleats but I have done more smaller ones. You just join the material up at the back, pleat the top and attach a waistband.

2Rebecca · 16/06/2023 00:13

I wear liberty silk to work now, it usually washes fairly well if hand washed. I made a crepe silk dress a couple of years ago and wore that today. Their sale stuff is usually better value

still annoyed by the editing, i presume that is editing
esme and patrick warning Matthew about Time
and lo! he runs out of time.
same last week - a warning to someone which turns out to come true.
and i dont like the bitching discussion they do.
i just like the clothes!

I was just in the middle of re-watching season 6 and it's just vanished from iPlayer. Only season 7,8 and 9 are now available ☹️

Thank you Rebecca. Thant's great!

I wonder, when things can be done so simply, everything in sewing life is so complicated . . .

And in more bad news, series 7 expires tonight.

Me too. ☹️
My Mum was brilliant but her eyesight failed.

Emotionalsupportviper · 16/06/2023 12:47

@2Rebecca - what proportion of material do you use? eg Twice waist measurement gathered ?

Oh no! I’ve only discovered Sewing Bee with this series and was so looking forward to working through the previous eight. I’d watched series one this week and was going to start two today.

Saw this and thought of this thread. I was disappointed with this last episode - such a waste and not in the spirit of recycling.

CabinetSauvignon yes the old style baby reins my DBs and I wore in the 50s & 60s were the first thing that came to mind when I saw Matthews crocheted thing. It looked so daft.

🤣 too accurate!!

Maireas · 17/06/2023 08:20

Oh god, yes
Matthew in baby reins made of crochet!

Maireas · 17/06/2023 08:21

I loved Mia's little suit. Very Chanel (ish)

woodhill · 17/06/2023 08:52

I would never cut up my crochet

Takes so much time

It did look good but, as I posted earlier, I think she crocheted the pieces she needed, sewed them into a blanket for the purposes of the challenge then just unpicked them. We know she can crochet and I don't think she cut any of the squares. In the close ups it looked like new yarn not second hand and previously washed. The blanket Asmaa used was definitely a second hand buy as were others that people used.

Maireas · 17/06/2023 09:30

I also liked Lizzie's red crochet jacket.

Yes. That was very creative and more in the spirit of the challenge in my opinion.

Brefugee · 17/06/2023 15:20

i thought Matthew had good ideas, i suspect he needs a partner who is good on technical skills because his execution wasn't brilliant.

I think Matthew's comment about the need for inclusive representation is borne out by many posters on this thread. His occasional wearing of clothes usually associated with women and feminity has not exactly been received with tolerant accceptance ....

The issue i had around Matthew was only when he left and babbling about inclusion. The rest of the time i was very happy he wafted in wearing what he wore, and didn't constantly bang on about being non-binary or whatever. If he hadn't babbled on (and i quite understand that it may have just been nerves) it would have been better. As in "look, folks, you can actually just wear what you like and all is good"

I did think he was the right one to go this week.

But again, aside of the zero waste trousers (i think you could tweak them in the construction without having any scraps, i also think you could adjust the measurements for a better fit. I liked the patch pockets, they add a bit of interest to the back.

Agree: makes no sense to repurpose tote bags. I make tote bags from scraps, not the other way round. And cutting up crochet? if anyone cuts up any of my crochet i will pull their lungs and heart through their nostrils with my hook.

I started a new thread as this one is nearly full 🙂
