The thought of cutting through crocheting or knitting makes me cringe. If I had nightmares I'd have nightmares about the floating, opened stitches. I see I'm not wasting this thread. Still a page to use.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 18/06/2023 12:32

Steeking had a huge moment about five years ago, I remember lots of people trying it in my yarnie groups. There are some absolutely gorgeous fair isle/colourwork cardigans that are worked in the round and then steeked to make the front opening.

Halsall · 18/06/2023 12:36

I know steeking is something that allows you to wield the scissors confidently but I’d still have major palpitations before trying it - and indeed, I never actually have.

I also liked Lizzie's red crochet jacket.

Yes - it was lovely and very stylish!

Emotionalsupportviper · 18/06/2023 12:42

The issue i had around Matthew was only when he left and babbling about inclusion. The rest of the time i was very happy he wafted in wearing what he wore, and didn't constantly bang on about being non-binary or whatever. If he hadn't babbled on (and i quite understand that it may have just been nerves) it would have been better. As in "look, folks, you can actually just wear what you like and all is good"

This.

HeadNorth · 18/06/2023 21:56

I liked Matthew and his crochet harness- he was creative and took risks. I thought Fauve should have gone and I suspect she will next week. At the moment Lizzie is the stand out contender for me - her crochet jacket was ace.

2Rebecca · 18/06/2023 22:49

@Emotionalsupportviper usually the full width of the Liberty Silk which is about 140cm. I usually bought 1m of their satin or crepe silk which did enough for a calf length skirt plus waistband. They have just started a sale and have some silk for £33 a metre which is good for a silk skirt. I love turquoise and am tempted by their £39 a metre Wild worlde silk satin for a skirt. Their silk is always good quality. Often if you can visit the shop when a sale is on you have more choice. I like their healing floral Tana Lawn cotton at £16.50 in the sale as well.

2Rebecca · 18/06/2023 23:22

I liked some of Matthew's ideas but thought the baby harness was ridiculous and don't think he did himself any favours by turning himself in to a caricature. as a (mainly) heterosexual woman my sexuality isn't the most interesting thing about me, why should your sexuality suddenly become fascinating if you're not heterosexual. If I wear trousers I'm not suddenly fascinating. Wear what you want, it's just clothes.

HeadNorth · 19/06/2023 06:38

Gosh, Matthew didn't half succeed in winding up a large section of Mumsnet, so that has been fun - I'll miss that Grin

Thank you @2Rebecca

Much appreciated. A bit out of my price range, but I'll look for similar weight material.

Not so much winding up. He was a chap in nail varnish and cute slippers. It was much more of a statement about accepting diversity until he made his speech. Which I'm guessing was a spontaneous and emotional outpouring of his reasons.
Which is also fine.

ArcaneWireless · 19/06/2023 11:38

Quite Brefugee

He was fine just being who he is. And was accepted for that. How wouldn’t he be?

But by pointing out differences/otherness to me just say that he doesn’t see himself as anything other than other.

And though he might be a wee bit of a quirky dresser with the harness creations - he is just the same as the rest of us. He’s not ‘other’ to me and I would imagine to a lot of folk on this thread.

By highlighting small differences in how we are or how we present ourselves, it just says to me that we don’t see ourselves as just the same as everyone. How not? Either that or we want to highlight how special we are compared to everyone else.

Everyone is the bloody same.

We all get born, live and die. We are all the same.

Wearing nail varnish and big earrings isn’t special. You could as well be Bet Lynch or me in the 80s. Or my mate who used to do the same but also in in his kilt worn over jeans, a blouse and a wwII flying jacket. This isn’t new.

He wasn’t speeching about otherness and difference in the 80s and beyond. He was his own self and rocked it. Which is all we ever need to do.

Brefugee · 19/06/2023 12:17

I do love to see a chap not afraid to be different, tho, don't get me wrong. And I do think his gushy speech was spontaneous and garbled because not rehearsed. It quite endeared him to me, even though I think it would have been better as "kthksbai"

ArcaneWireless · 19/06/2023 13:35

Sorry flower. I know. I’m off a nightshift, napping on and off and and yabbling. I too think his speech was spontaneous.

I suppose I’m saying is that it is a shame he feels different and had to say so. Just be your glorious self sunshine 👍🏼

Brefugee · 19/06/2023 16:17

Also I hope he keeps sewing / designing. Because I did think he was full of ideas.

Maireas · 19/06/2023 16:31

He's definitely a very creative person, as Patrick said.

Storynanny1 · 20/06/2023 11:38

I was disappointed to see those lovely crochet blankets cut up. I hope the person who made that white baby blanket - it’s the “ call the midwife” blanket- wasn’t watching. I’ve made that several times and know how much work goes into it. What a waste of time that challenge was.
Ive watched it from the first series, it’s getting like the other reality shows, all show and not so much substance.
Still will watch it though!

knittingaddict · 20/06/2023 22:30

Does anyone watch the Woolpatch youtube videos about the Sewing Bee? Well worth a watch. They do an episode every week that discusses that weeks makes, lows and triumphs.

The man who crochets had words about them cutting up crochet. 😂

MoltenLasagne · 20/06/2023 22:51

I must admit, I don't really get the zero waste trousers as a concept. If you have two patterns for trousers that both require 2m of material, why is the one that creates scraps worse?

I'd rather shape the pattern slightly, creates a teeny tiny bit of wastage and have trousers that don't look like a belted potato sack. Mind you, I did like the way they had to draw out the pattern on the fabric. Very similar to traditional suit drafting done by tailors.

Sausagenbacon · 21/06/2023 08:39

'Belted potato sack'. So true.

Sausagenbacon · 21/06/2023 08:44

Re Matthew. I was glad to see him go, partly because he wasn't a good sewer, also because I can't think of one of his designs that were attractive, apart from his crochet one, ironically. The idea of supporting the skirt with a net underskirt was great.
But what got to me was the whole 'quirky' thing. Imo Tony W is one of the best designers and sewers but, because he's not a drama llama, like Matthew, is overlooked in the programme.

I think Tony W is being under exposed in the edit so far and I have him pegged as a finalist.

Sausagenbacon · 21/06/2023 09:36

Me too.
Thanks to whoever recommended The Woolpatch on youtube, I'm really enjoying it.
