I don’t like celebrating someone leaving, it doesn’t seem in the spirit of the lovely show. I liked Matthew, but his dress was a mess - luckily for Fauve,

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2023 22:00

I felt sorry for Matthew. I thought Fauve's dress looked heavy , lumpen and itchy. But I would given my crochetophobia.

BestIsWest · 14/06/2023 22:16

I felt sorry for Matthew too. I thought his ideas were quite good at times, especially in the middle round.

PriamFarrl · 14/06/2023 22:17

I don’t think any of the crochet numbers were up to much in fairness. Even Mia’s was not lined up properly.
I thought Matthew would last longer than this.

Does anyone know what design the fabric Fauve is actually wearing is?
I love it!

Not sure @StrongandNorthern, but if you’re on Instagram, she’s on there as sew_fauve - you could ask her! It looks as though the pattern might be the Anthea Blouse by Anna Allen.

Ah thanks @Halsall. I'll do that!

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/06/2023 21:39

Tom Daley crochets too but the Harry Styles cardigan is knitted

I've just had a rant to husband about that. One thing knitters/crocheters hate is when people get it mixed up. No excuse for such a fundamental error Amber. I'm very disappointed in you.

Clymene · 14/06/2023 22:52

Matthew's made to measure was terrible but Fauve was lucky this week.

I'm not sure why his departure needed to be a tearful celebration of a white man being represented when they're in every series and there are a lot of gay men in the show but ho hum.

2Rebecca · 14/06/2023 23:17

I agree that cutting up decent bags to make something no one will wear is not recycling. The crochet challenge was unfair. Mia's blankets looked new. I suspect she crocheted it. Using your baby's blanket is also not using a faded tatty charity shop blanket. Those who couldn't crochet should have been able to buy new crocheted blankets or the production team sourced them. I hate the way the challenges encourage grabbiness too by seeming to only have a few spare of whatever material/ bag they have to fight over. They should have had them making a patchwork jacket out of scraps and more scrap usage. You don't need a no waste pattern if you use your scraps up

MouseMinge · 14/06/2023 23:22

I'd have given Garment of the Week to Lizzie because her jacket was so good and I liked how she'd mixed her patterns. Mia's was pretty good though and it was definitely between those two.

Fauve was lucky this week and she's going to have to really up her game or she'll be gone next week. In fact, I'll be surprised if she's not the next one to go.

This week's episode was pretty disappointing though so roll on next week.

MouseMinge · 14/06/2023 23:23

A patchwork jacket would have been a really good idea!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/06/2023 23:26

Now that several people have mentioned it, it does seem suspicious that Mia's granny squares were exactly the right size to form the jacket and skirt, no partial squares needed. I don't think she had to cut into it much or at all, just undo the seam between the squares as needed.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/06/2023 23:26

MouseMinge · 14/06/2023 23:23

They did a patchwork jacket last year as the pattern challenge one week.

longtompot · 14/06/2023 23:44

I was agog at the using of a crochet blanket made for someone's baby being cut up to make sleeves😮 I think Patrick and Esme thought the same as they said the sleeves could have been left off.
I said to my dd I bet someone on here mentions about how awful it would be to have a lovingly made blanket being chopped up, and she loved this If anyone that I crocheted a blanket for cuts theirs up will haunt them for the rest of their lives
Right one went. I think they were hoping for some more of their genius ideas to appear, but they just didn't.
We also thought Lizzies B top should have won the second challenge, and maybe even her final one the make of the week.
I do think it would be possible to make an item, like Mia did, with granny squares without making the blanket in the first place. It was such a gorgeous blanket and such a shame to turn it into something that won't be used. That said, if it was in a charity shop, then it potentially wasn't going to be used anyway. I loved the blanket that Lizzie used to make her dress.
But seeing all the blankets made me shiver as they gave off such squeaky, rough vibes. Same as chewing them shudders

2Rebecca · 15/06/2023 00:12

I don't see why they can't recycle their recycling challenges. I intend to make a Tamarack jacket out of my scraps some time

GulesMeansRed · 15/06/2023 00:16

Last year they had to make a dress out of an old duvet cover. That was a much better challenge.

ArcaneWireless · 15/06/2023 02:56

My favourite mTm this week were Lauren and Tony the Post.

They struck me as something I would really want to wear out of all of them. (If I wasn’t short and fat)

Not sad to see the threat of harnesses go but I was a wee bit sad to see Matthew go.

Or I was until the speech.

FriendsDrinkBook · 15/06/2023 04:19

I normally really enjoy this theme on the sewing bee but I feel they missed the mark somewhat , I did like the pattern challenge though. Using deadstock fabric is something we can all easily do

I think the right person went , he just didn't have the skill of the others. His speech made me uncomfortable. Why do children need to see his 'otherness'?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/06/2023 05:41

Re free cloth tote bags, I probably have half a dozen and only carry one about with me. Making a garment out of the rest would be a better fate for the others than languishing in the cupboard waiting for the current bag to die and need replacing. (It would be rather an odd mix of fabrics, though )

bluedomino · 15/06/2023 06:08

Sick to death of the bloody harnesses. One trick pony. So glad to see the back of the harness man, it didn't make him half as interesting and quirky as he thought, it just got boring fast.
I would like to see a professional making up the garment alongside the graphics showing how it is constructed.
Cutting up crochet was sinful. The episode where they used charity shop sweaters was far better.

HeadNorth · 15/06/2023 06:54

I think Matthew's comment about the need for inclusive representation is borne out by many posters on this thread. His occasional wearing of clothes usually associated with women and feminity has not exactly been received with tolerant accceptance ....

NashvilleQueen · 15/06/2023 06:56

I liked Matthew as a person but he's just not that accomplished a sewer.

I'm not sure though that he's as 'other' as he thinks, especially not these days. Sticking on jeans + heels or a mini skirt and sliders isn't that alternative lifestyle I'm afraid.

Love Lizzie and Aasma (who did the week in high heels which is very unusual compared to the usual slippers!) Mia's made to measure was really well thought out and executed. She's very good I think. Actually I don't mind any of the remaining contestants. I'm sure we will see some grow in skill and confidence over the next few weeks.

Sausagenbacon · 15/06/2023 07:04

Very glad to see Matthew go, especially after his speech. You're not special mate, you're just annoying.
And, tbf , his designs were hideous except for, ironically, the last one. I thought the idea of supporting the skirt with a stiff petticoat was very good.
I thought the no waste trousers were horrible. Why put so much effort into something that would only look good on a very tall, skinny person?

Emotionalsupportviper · 15/06/2023 07:13

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2023 21:03

Oh noooo!

Crochet blankets. I have a weird phobia of crochet. It's the texture. And the holes.

Shudder.

I like those little Amaguchi animals (I think that's tight) that some people make, but otherwise, I am in full agreement with you.

However I didn't like some of the directions yesterday (I hardly dare admit this but I had had such a tiring day I fell asleep which was why I didn't join you all)

The winner was (despite being crochet) very pretty and very, very 60s - I said to Mr Viper "I could see Twiggy i that", but i thought it had an air of Mary Quant rather than Chanel.

Glad Matthew went. I started off liking him, then got a bit fed up of the bondage (that harness he wore yesterday was beyond ridiculous), the being on the verge of tears, and the constant wokery. I am all for people living their best lives in joy and acceptance of their true self etc but I don't want them telling me about it every five minutes any more than I'd expect them to keep yammering on about being gay, or straight, or a Jehovah's witness or a vegan or anything else. Just BE.

He wasn't a particularly good sewer when it came to the execution of the garment either, but he did have some fantastic and creative ideas, so I was sorry to lose that aspect of him. He must have been a nice lad though as they all seemed genuinely sorry to lose him

Asmaa (my favourite) let herself down with the flowers on the front. Lizzies was great and I LOVED Lauren's. It is something I would actually wear.
