My mum used to make me clothing from anything we had , I had curtain trousers as a child and knitted jumpers. I loved them so much until I was a teen and insisted on branded things from shops.

Halsall · 10/06/2023 10:49

‘Sewist’ has been around on blogs and Instagram for ages. Must be at least a decade. I used to follow a lot of sewing blogs and they all called themselves that.

NashvilleQueen · 10/06/2023 11:13

I'll happily take Patrick off your hands in any suit, however ill fitting, and at any stage of facial hair.

ArcaneWireless · 10/06/2023 11:53

Seconded.

He could wear one of my kaftans if he liked.

Maireas · 10/06/2023 12:00

Ah. I'm not criticising Patrick. Or his physique.
Just his (lack of) style.
I think, @ArcaneWireless that you'd look great in any of those kaftan things that were the final challenge!

ArcaneWireless · 10/06/2023 12:04

I so would my friend!

They are a bit of me!!!! 🥰

I know what you are saying re Patrick by the way. He is a sharp suit away from mangodliness.

Esma has it nailed. She is also the bobbins.

Maireas · 10/06/2023 12:07

mangodliness indeed!
Esme is most definitely high grade bobbins.

Brefugee · 10/06/2023 12:38

oh god every time i have connipations about how my body has changed and how i can't clothe myself i think of her in a bright red shapeless dress, comfy shoes and a fabulous statement necklace and give myself a great big shake.

Agree that aside of sometimes not brilliantly fitted clothes, Patrick is an Adonis and not to be turned down. Plus he looks fab in a kilt. <swoon>

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/06/2023 12:52

Patrick could wear anything (outfit made from a windbreaker?) and be OK with me. You can't hide the twinkly eyes. He often posts photos from his bike rides on Instagram but none of him in lycra.

SleepingisanArt · 10/06/2023 12:56

I love both Patrick and Esme - her autobiography is brilliant! I loved her necklace this week (I confess I don't always) and would happily own one. Do you think they get Patrick to 'dress down' so that his sharp suits don't intimidate the sewers?

FriendsDrinkBook · 10/06/2023 13:54

I think that's just the way Patrick dresses. When he did celeb masterchef he wore some pretty random casual outfits. I recall a yellow jumper featuring heavily.

Brefugee · 10/06/2023 13:55

it's not the outfits, it is the fit of the suits. He is supposed to be famous for owning or working in a fancy-schmancy company famed for tailoring. The least i expect is that he looks sharp

Maireas · 10/06/2023 13:58

That's the point, @Brefugee - they're ill fitting.

You two have no standards!

True!

Both comments.

Or . . . noting? 😏😘

*nothing!

Bugger you, autocarrot.

EDIT BUTTON!! NOW!!!!!

Davros · 10/06/2023 19:27

A friend of mine who runs some tailors organisation in Savile Row told me that Patrick is not a tailor. He obviously knows lots about clothes, tailoring and sewing though

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/06/2023 20:34

Yes, I believe he had a career in finance or similar first of all, and then bought into a Savile Row tailor as a second career.

I think he did an engineering degree originally.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/06/2023 20:39

He has had quite a varied career. From Wiki:

Grant completed a degree in material sciences at the University of Leeds in 1994.[18] He chose an engineering degree because of "a fascination with how things are made".[19] His course included a year spent at the University of Orleans.[20]
Following graduation, Grant relocated to the United States where he worked as a ski instructor,[11] as a counsellor at a summer camp in Santa Cruz, California, as a nanny, a landscape gardener, and a model agent.[21] He returned to Britain in 1995 to take up a career in marketing, first at cable-makers BICC and Corning, before moving to optical components manufacturer Bookham Technology in 2000.[22] From 2004, Grant studied for a MBA degree, funded by Bookham, at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, where he was a member of New College.[23] His thesis, completed in October 2005, focused on the regeneration of luxury fashion brands such as Burberry, and was titled "Is Burberry's formula for brand revitalisation replicable?".[3]

I was about to say that I was reading about someone else who started off with a fascination with how things worked/were made and then I realised it was a character in a novel and not actual real life.

I love Patrick. I'll have to look more closely at his suits because I find him so attractive that I haven't noticed things like clothes. I'm such a middle-aged cliche.

atthebottomofthehill · 10/06/2023 21:17

I once met Patrick in his savile row tailor's shop when I went in to get something for my husband. At the time I remember fancying him on sight and he had this warm energy, and then a few years later remembered him when he popped up on tv. Which is highly unusual because I rarely remember things/people. Some people just have charisma, and he does!

Halsall · 10/06/2023 21:26

Patrick is extremely easy on the eye but I have to say that his suits recently haven’t been very pleasing. The trousers seem a tad too short and the jackets too big.

If anyone hasn’t seen the very interesting programme he made about the uniforms for the Coronation, he appears in some rather….interesting casual-wear in that. Not to mention his full-length belted black raincoat + helmet for cycling. It’s still available on iplayer….just saying 🤭

Nachtvlinder · 10/06/2023 21:43

Unfortunately, I'm not able to watch this as I don't have a TV license, but I remember it fondly when I had one years ago. Is there a chance of watching this on a streaming site or alternative? Also, The Pottery Throwdown was a fave of mine too, but missed all the subsequent series' after S2.
