I think Asmaa's experience in making underwear will also stand her in good stead - she understands boning which is always something that trips people up.

I wasn’t a massive fan of the transformation challenge bondage shirt, a bit surprised it came first.

It was fecking horrible, and totally unwearable - not even a bit of nipple tape!

I never usually watch Sewing Bee, but I used to work with Asmaa so thought I'd tune in. She is such a lovely person, and fantastic to work with

I can well believe it -she comes across as being very down-to-earth and diligent.

But absolutely the sort of thing that would appeal to Esme.

True, Captain.

Very true. 😄

No, it’s him, not you.

Agree - definitely him.

I quite like Mathew's look, more men should be adventurous in what they wear without claiming to be women.

Off piste, but I tiotally agree with you.

Smash the stereotypes, don't consolidate them. That would be to everyone's benefit.

I'm with you on this. I'm 68, in the 60s, 70s and 80s people were exploring their identity, experimenting and being their true selves at that moment - what happened?

What happened?

Instead of being gender non-conforming, which is wonderful, some individuals decided to erase the entire female sex.

That's what happened.

I've nothing against Matthew (irritating though he is on a personal level) but I don't like the ethos. But I will say no more because I don't want to take the thread any further off track.

Anyway - I'm still looking forward to the next episode. I'm also going to have a look at the Coronation uniforms programme. It was too late to watch it last night, but it looked amazing.

Talking of the pottery show, Ellie Taylor would make a good host on sewing bee, she did a great job stepping in for sister.michael when she broke her leg.

She did - I was almost sorry to see Sister Micheal back, and I love her.

She would have been dry humping him Grin

And we would all have been screaming at the telly "GET OFF MY PATRICK, YOU @&%£*"

😄

I read this thread before I watched the last episode and knew who was leaving, but to be honest, there were some poorer sewers than Gilly that should have gone. I guess the overall thing was she didn't listen to the experts re the fabric or meeting the brief.
I thought the bag challenge was great but wish they were given more time. As mentioned upthread, someone said they could be done in about 5hours if you knew the pattern. Is the fabric choosing etc included in this time? That was a bit unfair with this one with them having to find unfamiliar haberdashery items.
The windbreak challenge I am a bit meh about.
I did like the swimming costume challenge. I loved the colour and shape of Matthews one but the fitting and execution was awful!
I liked the one that won garment of the week. The sleeves were really fun.
I liked Tony not with the two glasses (loved his ginkgo leaf shirt) costume and such a shame the colour blocks slightly overlapped.
Asmaas was very retro and what a shame about the melting! I don't know why none of them didn't use a cotton cloth between the iron and the item? I guess time and pressure have a lot to answer for.
I loved the Battenberg inspired one too and that was sewn really well.
I'm trying to remember the others...

I also particularly liked Asmaa's, and the batten burg one worked a lot better on the model than I expected from the drawing (and was quite a challenge - that lady had a magnificent boobage! I would think that would be a challenge to fit).

Willmafrockfit · 05/06/2023 09:42

the coronation uniforms programme was excellent.
we looked out the man that was riding behind the carriage specifically

lollipoprainbow · 05/06/2023 17:20

I've thought along Ellie Taylor would be amazing for this. I find SP a bit cold and sarcastic.

Maireas · 05/06/2023 17:28

I think Sara Pascoe is lovely. I've not heard any sarcasm and think she's quite kind and a bit quirky.

Agreed. She always seems kind to me.

nomdegrrr1 · 05/06/2023 17:44

I think Gilly ignored the brief for the backpack and the swimsuit, and her finished results weren't good enough to make up for her ignoring what the judges asked.

The backpack looked flimsy and she was warned.

AceOfCups · 05/06/2023 19:02

I don't mind Sara Pascoe as a host but I hate her aggressively wacky outfits. Just wear something normal! Show off some good tailoring or a dress with interesting seam lines/construction details if you want to roll with the sewing theme.

I'm a bit disappointed that there is an obvious winner already. Asmaa seems great, but she is miles more skilled than the others. Unless she really cocks up one week, it's hard to imagine that any one else can come close to winning.

On the other hand, I'm glad there are less mediocre men this year. For the last few seasons it's felt like the producers have tried to fill up half the slots with men regardless of whether they can sew very well or not.

Maireas · 05/06/2023 19:05

I think Sara's outfits are fine. I'm not sure what "aggressively wacky" means, but I liked her dress last week, and the blouse the week before. They seemed quite mainstream to me.

atthebottomofthehill · 05/06/2023 20:09

I don't agree that there's an obvious winner. Asma is very skilled for sure but perhaps lacks a bit of imagination and I think other sewers could come to the fore. One does actually wonder how the less good sewers make in onto the programme - surely better people must audition? Don't know why everyone is getting their knickers in a twist about Matthew, he's fine.

atthebottomofthehill · 05/06/2023 20:10

Also I really like Sara pascoe and LOVED her neon blouse and high waisted culottes in week 1

FriendsDrinkBook · 05/06/2023 21:25

The stuff Sara wears is really popular within the sewing community right now. Big sleeves , wide leg trousers and patchwork are everywhere with instagram sewists.
