I hope Matthew goes next week. He's an annoying prick and his only redeeming quality is when he talks about his Nan.

SoupDragon · 02/06/2023 11:34

Honestly, if this is the way the threads are going to go until Matthew leaves, I'm done.

SoupDragon · 02/06/2023 11:34

Clymene · 02/06/2023 11:33

Because it's supposed to be designed to fit the model in front of them Confused

No it isn't. It is simply meant to fit the model in front of them. The design can be anything.

Clymene · 02/06/2023 11:34

SoupDragon · 02/06/2023 11:33

I mean, it was badly made/fitted but it was made and fitted for his model. The design was suitable for anyone who wanted to wear it though.

Vicki designed hers to cover her very pale skin. Her model was black. Does that also fail?

That's what I meant. It was a badly made and fitted garment.

Clymene · 02/06/2023 11:35

Don't worry, he'll be gone next week. He's shit Smile

My apologies if my posts have tarnished your enjoyment of the show. I won’t comment again.

Exactly - I thought that was pretty obvious, I can't believe people are getting in a stew about him mentioning some of his mates may want a skirt to obscure their dicks - what is the problem? Matthew tried to fit his model, but like lot's of them, didn't do a very good job of it. He seems a cute and creative guy to me, let's not have these threads descend into nastiness about the sewers. I like them all.

Piggywaspushed · 02/06/2023 11:51

This also happened on the pottery thread. Can't even remember why now.

I think there is almost certainly a market for trans swimwear . Any textile designer would be very savvy to tap into their market, if it aligned with their values. If they did, it would be entirely appropriate and sensible to use the language of the target group.

Ladybrrrd · 02/06/2023 11:52

Same! Doesn't matter who they are, someone shows a bit of queerness or allyship etc on TV and suddenly they're shit and there's a massive, nasty pile on. (I know Matthew didn't do a good job but beside the point). Suddenly people don't like them and sometimes they 'just don't know why.' Happened with Taskmaster, happened with Pottery, happened with Masterchef, happened with Bake Off.

It's predictable on here but very tiring. I'll see how things are next time.

I like Tony Two Bins

This has happened a few times on the Pottery Thread.

One someone made a rainbow design on something, there was a non-binary contestant that people were very sad and condescending about, and of course every time Rose comes on people are frothing at the mouth. Lots of nastiness towards her. (She has tweeted in support of trans rights a lot and people are really shocked and offended for some reason)

It's EVERY time a trans person, queer person, or ally appears on screen.

MorrisZapp · 02/06/2023 12:04

Gay people have been beloved mainstays of reality and competition shows since the genre began - not one person has seriously complained about it. Look at Gogglebox and any other popular show, they'd be positively weird without gay people on them.

But 'queer' is a very different animal. I'm not going to stop watching Sewing Bee because some guy made a crap costume and said 'female identifying people' but my eyes just about rolled out of my head. I'd so much rather it wasn't this way, but because this spills over into womens rights they've brought the conflict to me.

MorrisZapp · 02/06/2023 12:16

And in fact a transexual woman called Nadia won Big Brother, pre all the gender madness.

murasaki · 02/06/2023 12:19

Talking of the pottery show, Ellie Taylor would make a good host on sewing bee, she did a great job stepping in for sister.michael when she broke her leg.

Ladybrrrd · 02/06/2023 12:21

It's only a conflict because you're making it one. Millions of people use those terms, it's not because they're out to get you, it is just that language has evolved. The reaction would have been exactly the same whether he said female identifying people, or transwomen, or women with 'male' bits, or whatever. Whatever language they use, people who identify that way also go swimming, and he's well within his rights to think of them.

Anyway I'll leave it there. I hate that it's so predictable on here.

I agree, though I love Siobhan too. I saw her in 'Extraordinary' recently, which was brilliant.

Happy to be friends in sewing 🐝🐝

I'm thinking of some stylish presenters sadly no longer with us, imagine Magenta Devine or Paula Yates on a show like this? They'd be gossipy and brilliant.

Eh, please don’t link Matthew to the lovely Gay community. Gender bollocks and homosexuality are two entirely separate things that shouldn’t be linked.

His sewing skills aren’t great and he’s obviously only there for the ick factor. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm with you on this. I'm 68, in the 60s, 70s and 80s people were exploring their identity, experimenting and being their true selves at that moment - what happened?

Honestly, the TRs movement happened.

I don't care what people wear and I certainly don't think people should dress according to their sex. However when I see this sort of thing now I can't help but see an agenda and it's ruined everything. I don't blame GC people for the situation we are now in.

Now back to the lovely sewing. I will happily keep watching.

I think Paula Yates would have been condescending, bitchy and vile to the lady sewers and flirted embarrassingly with the blokes. Magenta Devine would have been fun though.

Maireas · 02/06/2023 12:41

Can you imagine what Paula Yates' behaviour would have been like with Patrick?!

Wow I left this thread on page 8 and have had one heck of a catch up!
I rarely get to watch the show on the day it airs, unfortunately, so playing catch up at the minute.

I really liked Vicki’s bag and her choice of fabric and I thought the same with Asmaa’s - currently they are my two favourites. It was such a shame that Asmaa’s costume was burnt because it was a stunning design and complex looking, I was really disappointed for her.

Gillie annoyed me in the bag challenge by disregarding Patrick’s advice and then to top it off she didn’t get the lining done or get close to finishing. I think she had a very bad week and deciding to do a basic swimsuit wasn’t the greatest idea, especially when she knew it didn’t really fit the brief and the binding wasn’t complex enough or done exceptionally well. Her fit was far better than some of the others though. I think it was the right choice from the judges but I do feel a bit sorry for her, I’m sure her sewing is far better when there’s very little time pressure and it’s not challenges that she wouldn’t usually choose to attempt.

Matthew, well he seems to be a controversial topic on here which I’m not going to get into. From a sewing perspective I liked his fabric choice for the bag, it was a shame the stripes didn’t match up because if they had it would have looked quite striking. For the swimsuit I really liked his design and the colour choices, going purely on the colours and not the statement behind them, but the judges were completely fair about his execution. Those darts at the front were terrible to look at and because of their prominent placement they couldn’t be hidden. I think he has some good designs but the overall finish could do with some refinement, like last weeks challenge where he had a half sleeve and a harness - not a bad idea but I think in the time he had he could have at least secured the raw edges.

I’m not sure from just two episodes who is now the weakest sewer and I’m not great at remembering who is who and what their names are 😂 I’m looking forward to next week and really credit the show for reigniting my love of sewing - if only I could get round to actually making something 😂
