I thought Claudia was by far the best presenter. She seemed to be able to communicate with the contestants in a much more natural way. SP’s banter just sounds forced

I think the right people have gone so far but there are several strong sewers there all with a good chance and who will keep it interesting throughout the rest of the series

I think Matthew could well be next, he doesn’t seem to have much of a clue about pattern and garment construction.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/06/2023 15:48

I like Sara more than Claudia.

SoupDragon · 01/06/2023 19:51

I guess they'll never get a presenter everyone likes!

HeadNorth · 01/06/2023 21:25

I really enjoyed that episode. All the sewers are lovely and I enjoy their diversity. Gillie clearly had to go, it was a terrible week for her, but she seems a lovely person.

pastabest · 01/06/2023 21:28

I think Joe was the best fit with Esme and Patrick. He just seemed to pull the whole thing together in a way Sara hasn't quite achieved, although I actually prefer her as a person.

Maireas · 02/06/2023 07:38

Sara is a good presenter, she's just nice and friendly with the contestants and has a gentle charm.
I'm not keen on Claudia's persona.

Maireas · 02/06/2023 07:43

I'm going to agree with pp and say that Matthew is creative, but doesn't necessarily have the technical skills. He has good ideas and is prepared to take risks. Hid swimsuit looked far worse than Gillie's for that reason.
I think that he, Maria and Lizzie are now the weakest for those reasons.

HeadNorth · 02/06/2023 08:22

Esme did say though that she rated creativity highly, so that may well keep Matthew in. I think he looks cute and I am depressed by the people slagging of his style. I used to wear mens suits and docs in the 80s and get tutted at, I honestly thought we had moved on from that.

Hear hear. I sometimes think things are going backwards and we are almost where we were when Section 28 ruled. That's a digression from a lovely Sewing Bee thread though.

If they judge him entirely on sewing ability he will probably go next.

Piggywaspushed · 02/06/2023 08:44

I like everyone. All the presenters, all the contestants. The casting is very canny on all these shows. Matthew's swimsuit was shit but I like a bit of out there creativity.

Maireas · 02/06/2023 08:52

I like to see people taking a chance and trying different things. Vicky came last with the wind breaker transformation, but she had a quirky idea and gave it a go. The obvious thing was a waterproof cape.
I think Maria is probably good but not quite found the groove.

FriendsDrinkBook · 02/06/2023 08:59

I don't have an issue with Matthew's swimsuit design , what bothered me was his refusal to say the word woman/women. The word is being erased right infront of us. Also , we do not identify as a sex , our biology defines our sex. Yes , wear what you like , but show women the respect they deserve and call us what we are. We are not 'female identifying people'. I hate that I'm saying this on a sewing/tv forum but it's been its been bothering me since watching the last episode.

I won’t be watching it anymore. And I’m pretty sure no one will know or care. But I refuse to be part of this kind of nonsense even by stealth.

I can't believe a someone dressing in a non gender conforming way upsets you so much - you would have hated me in the 80s Grin

I'm with you on this. I'm 68, in the 60s, 70s and 80s people were exploring their identity, experimenting and being their true selves at that moment - what happened?

IglesiasPiggl · 02/06/2023 11:05

I am so glad the Sewing Bee is back.

It doesn’t upset me. I couldn’t care less what people wear. And I most certainly wouldn’t have hated you. Why would I? But I have a funny feeling you’d have gotten a kick out of others perhaps hating you. Truth be told I doubt I’d have looked twice at you but then I was up to my elbows in nappies from 1978 to the early 80’s.

I think you’ve missed that what I refuse to be part of even by stealth is the condoning of someone refusing to say women/woman. It’s as if we’re being obliterated.

And I’m 65 by the way.

This is a deeper political issue and i'd say that this thread probably isn't the right place for it so if we could accept that people have different opinions and move on, it'd be nice to keep this thread a sewing bee place to be.

I don't think anybody's objecting to Matthew dressing in a gender nonconforming way. What the previous poster said (very clearly) was that he described his swimsuit as a design for 'female identifying people'. It's a made to measure challenge and he was making a swimsuit to fit his allocated model who is clearly a woman. Why not say so? He could have mentioned in passing that the design could be adapted to fit other body shapes/types. Transwomen aren't the only ones who want a bit of extra fabric around the crotch area for modesty.

Because his design was for anyone who wants to wear a female swimsuit.

Same as Younger Tony's was for his "friends" who wanted to hide the top of their legs and show off their bust - it was designed for them, not his model.

sorry, that should be the early 90’s with a few years off midway.

Clymene · 02/06/2023 11:30

Well then it fails the made to measure challenge then.

How?

SoupDragon · 02/06/2023 11:33

I mean, it was badly made/fitted but it was made and fitted for his model. The design was suitable for anyone who wanted to wear it though.

Vicki designed hers to cover her very pale skin. Her model was black. Does that also fail?

Clymene · 02/06/2023 11:33

Because it's supposed to be designed to fit the model in front of them Confused
