Is anyone watching? I'm finding it increasingly boring and Sam Claflin is woefully miscast, he's far too old and looks nothing like a rock star.

Still haven’t watched it, but I thought when I read the book that it would be a big ask for an adaptation to pull off the songwriting at the level needed to be convincing. They should have got some of the actual 70s greats to contribute- ABBA, the BeeGees etc. And FM, obviously.

EachandEveryone · 18/03/2023 14:51

Im up to date now. Billy is just so wooden. Ive never seen him in anything before so i dont know what hes like generally.

Chikapu · 18/03/2023 15:09

Billy looks terminally embarrassed when he's on stage. The only decent song for me is Patti Smith's Dancing Barefoot.

I wonder if that's part of the problem- it opens with Patti Smith, then everything in it is basically a vague sound a like of songs you kind of know.

TheClash2023 · 18/03/2023 18:07

I've not read the book. I'm really enjoying it

itshappened · 18/03/2023 22:48

I struggled to get into the book but have just binge watched the series so far and I've really enjoyed it. I think Suki Waterhouse is a knock out... I've never seen her in anything before but she is stunning. I think they all have the style and looks of the era actually and the clothes are amazing. I didn't know Riley Keough before this, but actually I think she looks well cast in the context of what was considered sexy in the 70s, and especially the female singers of the day and how they were generally unconventionally beautiful but just had something about them that meant you couldn't take your eyes off them. Her voice is incredible. I do agree that the guy playing Billy isn't sexy though. Not his looks exactly, he just lacks the charisma somehow. Otherwise it's good fun and makes me want to dance and have a few drinks and go a bit wild. Instead I'll have an early night and might give the book another go!

Railwayroad · 24/03/2023 13:36

I have just finished it all! I loved it actually. I know it’s tosh but it was enjoyable. I cried at the end.

mac1974 · 24/03/2023 23:13

Just finished it tonight. I loved it. I preferred it to the book but maybe I'll re-read the book to see how I feel about it now.
What will I watch now on a Friday night?? 😭

Blossomtoes · 24/03/2023 23:18

Hated the end which if I recollect is different to the book. But overall it was fabulous and incredibly authentic. Having lived through the 70s it was like being transported back in time to my youth.

Twisting · 25/03/2023 00:44

I preferred the book ending. Although I thought camila was actually presented as quite hard.

Having them still photogenic in the 90s clearly makes for a sequel.

Anyone else notice Kim Gordon as producer? Daisy does grunge next?

Twisting · 25/03/2023 00:46

I preferred Billy and his alcoholism in the book, too. The series enjoyed a cliche far too much.

SerafinasGoose · 25/03/2023 09:58

I've just binge-read the book. Quite interesting, but I find that particular narrative style jarring - just a new interview-style take on the old epistolary form and after some time it becomes tedious to read.

Part of what appeals about the screen adaptation, superficial as it sounds, is the fantastic costumes and feeling of being transported back in time to a more colourful, vibrant era. In 'Daisy' I see kind of a combination of Janis, Pamela Courson, Grace Slick and Stevie Nicks - 'Karen' has definite shades of the wonderful late Christine McVie.

I'm interested to see how the ending differs, but screen adaptations are definitely not always inferior to their source texts. I can't get into the Billy character, but so far (4 episodes in) I prefer the series.

MrsPatterson2014 · 25/03/2023 11:34

I really enjoyed this, the music, outfits. Preferred it to the book. Really easy to watch, an episode just flashed by. Riley Keough was great as Daisy.

But that’s literally what they were trying to do!

I really liked the songs.

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 25/03/2023 13:17

Finished it now. I thought it was good, (not amazing, but pretty solid really) loved the costumes, the period detail, had no problem at all with the casting of Billy, and I liked how it was tied up at the end. Might now Wikipedia the book plot to see how the ending differs). I loved Warren towards the end, and Billy really WAS a twat to the bass player whose name I’ve already forgotten ha ha.

Great to see Grace Slick mentioned upthread, I remember thinking how cheesy Jefferson Starship were in the 80s, then being blown away when I discovered old footage of Jefferson Airplane.

Mirabai · 25/03/2023 13:18

The songs themselves weren’t actually bad. They’re just there to to give a feel of the era. They just needed more distinctive voices, good guitar with some blues riffs and solos, and a better drummer.

Mirabai · 25/03/2023 13:19

I’m critical of it because it was ok but it could have been really good.

From the trailers it looked like it would be better so I was disappointed.

Twisting · 25/03/2023 13:29

The teeth distracted me. No one had 70s teeth. Even American 70s teeth.

Forestdweller11 · 25/03/2023 13:43

Binged it loved it. Loved all the females. Not too keen on the men. Maybe it was the era though. Unless you are Starksy/Hutch/HuggyBear I'm not sure 70s fashion does a lot for me. Loved the costumes esp Daisy's

I sort of agree which is why I stuck with it.

I was a 70s kid and even now the coolest look possible is tight bell bottoms, t shirt, leather jacket, long hair. Kind of Robert Plant 1975 or David Bowie.

EachandEveryone · 26/03/2023 00:14

The audible book was very good I thought. I enjoyed the show but didnt love it. I never felt any chemistry between them. Didnt they have two children in the book? I also thought one of the band died but I could be imagining that.

Whywere · 26/03/2023 00:22

The whole premise is sexual tension and there is none.

Zero

so much promise and absolutely shit

Sam Claflin FFS can you honestly not find someone with more sex appeal . So fucking OLD trying to play early 20s??

Jellyheadbang · 26/03/2023 02:13

Lol at the poster who wrote 'NOT COOL'.. I concur.

Anyone who's a real music aficionado, especially rock from around that era is likely to have read many stories, seen films, documentaries, mockumentaries etc and The Six are definitely Not Cool.
They're like a Christian 'rock' band who fell a bit by the wayside on tour in the secular world but who never lost their Osmonds-like roots, eventually finding their way back to the flock.

Daisy Jones comes across as ordinary.
Theyre all so one dimensional, provincial and their music is shite.

They'd have been better off making the film using real songs and passing them off as the band's own.

they mention drugs a couple of times and there's a scene where someone's studying their hand intently for a bit.
it's like the writers were also Christians who have been well sheltered and never saw or heard any of the billions of nuts Rock n roll stories and just made up a load of wet stuff their characters might do if they were to go kerrraaazy ..

Some of the supporting band members look like bloody James Bolam and Rodney Bewes from the likely lads.

I was majorly disappointed as I live for this kind of nostalgia usually. If they took out the few mildly sexy bits this would be the type of tame and safe family drama I'd watch with my music loving kids.

Huh? There are constant scenes of coke being snorted.

You sound awfully angry about a TV show…

Yes I'm sure one of the band did die which is why I was waiting to see which one it was in the tv version, turned out none of them!
