Is anyone watching? I'm finding it increasingly boring and Sam Claflin is woefully miscast, he's far too old and looks nothing like a rock star.

Why did people hate the book? I loved it! Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of my favourite authors.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 07/03/2023 13:41

I don't remember Daisy in the book getting a job in a cafe?

Delatron · 07/03/2023 16:01

Watched the first episode last night and came on to say the same thing - he looks too old to be Billy in the younger scenes but looks so much better in the older scenes with the beard.

I also think the casting of Daisy is off too…but I love her outfits. So will keep watching.

I thought Camilla was French in the book not Spanish. Small detail and I could be misremembering.

I don't think she did either. I thought her parents were loaded.

hopeishere · 07/03/2023 16:09

The ages are all over the show. The main guy looks too old in the bit where he's meant to be young!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 07/03/2023 16:15

I didn't like the book much either - I really disliked the Daisy character. TV show looks good from a few clips I've seen, I love that whole era too.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 07/03/2023 16:19

mewkins thank you.

Maybe Daisy is supposed to be more 'normal' and relatable in the TV series, but part of what made her character interesting and ethereal in the book was that she didn't have money worries and could do what she liked, without considering others.

LoobyDop · 07/03/2023 16:47

Yes Daisy wasn’t supposed to be likeable, just so talented that she got away with it. Camilla was the nice one.

Agreed, Looby. I have only watched the first two episodes so far and I hope these two characters aren't changed too much.

I think the way they're dropping the episodes (3 a week) is extremely odd.

Why did people hate the book?

I found the format really irritating and the characters smug, although admittedly I didn't get very far into it. I'm also finding the talking heads bit annoying (especially Sam Claflin) in the tv series though. I think I would have preferred just a linear drama.

Is it definitely 3 episodes a week? Seems a bit odd as there's (I think) ten episodes altogether. I know a lot of streaming services release two or three episodes in the first week to draw people in then continue with just one a week.

Vanillalime · 08/03/2023 21:29

I’m watching but finding it a bit formulaic. It is easy watching but kind of filler TV. Sam Claflin is gorgeous in the later scenes with the straight hair & those cheekbones 🥰

I love watching anything to do with LA & the music scene so I’ll be sticking with it.

mac1974 · 08/03/2023 22:30

I enjoyed the book but I'm much preferring the tv show. I think it's brilliant.

LarryandLeon · 09/03/2023 11:50

I’m enjoying the TV show more than the book! Daisy is a lot less annoying in the series (so far). I feel like the casting is pretty good overall though I agree Sam Claflin looks old for the part. Was there a younger actor playing him at the start when the band were forming? I’m not sure it works to use the same actors for the talking heads part when it’s meant to be 20 years later.

LarryandLeon · 09/03/2023 11:55

Just seen it is another actor playing younger Billy- he was just right imo but I guess not a big name like Sam Clafin. I really like the actor playing Camilla too & she feels very familiar to me but I haven’t seen anything else she’s been in based on my IMDb search!

It’s bloody annoying. I’m a huge binger and hate waiting!

LarryandLeon · 13/03/2023 13:41

Has anyone watched up to episode 6 yet? I’m still enjoying it but finding some parts a bit slow- 10 parts is definitely too long imo. On another point I actually think the way they’ve aged Graham & Eddie is really believable. Less convinced by Camila.

Chikapu · 13/03/2023 13:47

I'm up to episode 5. I just can't stand the songs tbh, they're cheesy and I'm having a hard time believing they'd be that successful. I'm fast-forwarding through them. The relationships are just nothing at this point, there's no chemistry between any of the characters.

If you look her lips aren't in the right place - or don't show the effort needed for the style and volume of the song

If you Google it as well she gives an interview somewhere were she says she lied about her singing ability to get the job.

It's a common Hollywood practice eg it's not Rebecca Ferguson singing in The Greatest Showman

Or Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady
Or Natalie Wood in West Side Story
Or Deborah Kerr in the King and I Grin

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 13/03/2023 13:58

I'm enjoying it. I like the period details and the documentary style- what I find fascinating is that the talking heads are 20 years after the split so they are still "period" ie 90s, hence Daisy's very heavy makeup.

Unlike others, I think it needs the talking heads to break it up. The only think is that it does feel like it's teetering on the brink of satirical mockumentary sometimes.

I disliked Daisy singing to the boyfriend after she pushed him in the pool, it was cringey. Just pushing would have been fine.

The English one is an interesting cross between Christine McVie and Chrissie Hynde, but I feel like she should be doing more. Only watched 3 episodes so far.

I haven't read the book. I do know quite a lot of 1970s Laurel Canyon Mac- era lore though.

Finding it slightly difficult to take seriously- probably not helped that I just finished Peaky Blinders season 6 where Sam Claflin played Moseley, a very old nazi!

Being Elvis’ granddaughter definitely would have helped get the job!

I don’t think you’re meant to take it seriously. It’s a bit of entertaining froth.

It’s hardly a comedy is it @Blossomtoes?

Blossomtoes · 15/03/2023 00:53

No, it’s not Hamlet either.
