That brown was badly painted. It’s interesting that Joanne was the only one who pointed out practicalities like having painting near the sink.
I would have liked to have heard the opinion of the nursery staff.

MichaelAndEagle · 14/03/2023 21:59

Yes it would have been great to get their thoughts!

BigMandysBookClub · 14/03/2023 22:01

I think the right person went. I think Jack is the contender this year. He did the best room last week with the big sofa didn't he?

Welshgal85 · 14/03/2023 20:54

Anyone know where Michelle’s striped top is from?

Tried to use google lens but it didn't come up with anything the same..

Holihobbies · 14/03/2023 22:17

Does Joanne's design aesthetic extend to her daughter having to have the exact same hair as she does ? I now have a vision of her identikit family cos you know 'style'

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 14/03/2023 23:15

Does the nursery owner get to have their nursery decorated the way they want it when the cameras have gone?

I wondered what they said to the parents “ sorry parents, the nursery will be closed for a few days while we allow people to put in unsafe installations and inappropriate decorations. Good luck explaining this to your employers”

AwayThenBack · 15/03/2023 21:48

I thought I was a strange challenge as surely you need some specialist knowledge to design an appropriate nursery space (eg won’t their be certain things ofsfed look for). I can’t think offhand but specific child development stages etc. My own DCs preschool
nursery was revamped very natural colours and all wood (open ended wooden toys etc).

I hated the brown room so thought it was right decision. I loved the hot air balloons and the teee with the desk and stools around. The baby room was more cohesive with the lighting being cleverly linked in each space. Only think I wasn’t sure if was the height of all the sensory items and the babies needing to reach over the seating to access.

ScattyHattie · 16/03/2023 00:35

Glad buse went that brown room was so ugly and sand all over floor and logs was poorly thought out last minute idea.

Didn't they used to have clients who explained what they needed in the spaces and reviewed the designs so could point which were terrible ideas early on.

I loved the air balloons and clouds with tree table, looking forward to what he may do in future. The babies team with curved calm nook and sensory walls were good and liked the use of paper lampshade ceiling although I wouldn't like to be the one cleaning any of the rooms.

I bet the goth lady wished she went for some sort of heavy duty vinyl, I don't recall seeing how bad the previous flooring was but it looked like the others all got similar condition rooms to work on.

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 16/03/2023 00:52

I got a bit annoyed at Michelle’s use of “safeguarding” to mean “keeping children safe from injury from splinters and stuff”. That’s not what safeguarding means! But a minor and totally irrelevant gripe and she was right about the safety implications, just used the wrong word! She’s so fab.

The building was beautiful and I loved the paper lanterns and hot air balloons. DS (6) watched with us and said that he would have enjoyed the little “climb along the wall” installation when he was a toddler. He wasn’t entirely convinced by the supposedly limitless imaginative play potential of the cardboard tube sheep pen. I thought it was style over substance, kids that age would want to climb on it and would get upset at being told not to, def wasn’t strong enough for that.

I wondered if red hair lady who made the throne and wrote the song had been told in her brief that she had to include an admin desk for the staff, as that was quite prominent in her area, with the big adult office chair. Yet no mention of it during the feedback.

@viques I also commented to DH “wonder what they told the parents?”! He reckoned done over a weekend but I think highly unlikely they’d have had the place ready for use on the Monday morning.

jay55 · 16/03/2023 07:20

I thought it was weird that none of them had any creative storage for the toys, art supplies etc.
None of the rooms looked actually kid friendly from a could be destroyed in 5 minutes sense.

I don't expect anything other than the air balloons to stay.

PriamFarrl · 16/03/2023 08:07

I’ve worked in a nursery and a lot of that was fairly useless. As said above there was very little storage. I also thought that the room with the paper rolls on the wall was lacking. There wasn’t much there to do.
It would have been much better had they met with staff first who explained what was needed and then the brief was looked at again afterwards.

That’s funny but I can assure you her adult daughters are very much in control of their own hair styles and fashion choices 🤣

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 16/03/2023 10:27

I thought that Monika got a rough deal with her activity room because you could see that it had been designed as a baby change area with the counters along the wall that she had obviously been told she could not remove.

TempName247 · 16/03/2023 10:36

I loved Jacks, it was beautiful, I did wonder what happens when the beach balls deflate though!l

I don't think they were inflatable beach balls, I think they were more thick-skinned rigid ones.

TempName247 · 16/03/2023 14:52

Monika didn’t have the experience to know that the floor would take that long unfortunately, as PPs have said this is where the older ones are going to have that advantage. And the contestants like Jack who has obviously done a lot of crafting and making and therefore knows what is achievable in the time scale.

Madcats · 16/03/2023 15:34

I sat watching the nursery episode with DD(15) who then spent part of the evening googling what was her lovely nursery. That said I did used to curse the enormous indoor sand area (most of which seemed to end up in pockets).

Apparently I spent most of the episode tut-tutting and saying "nope". I just found it really odd that they didn't have an "expert" nursery manager in to judge and point out the pitfalls of some of the designs. Staff would ned to spend all day filling in injury reports in some of those rooms.

I did like the hot air balloons. Personally I would have had them on pulleys (and a high mounted cleat for the cord) and swapped around passengers from time to time. I think the balls/balloons were the ones you see at seaside shops in big crates, rather than the inflatable ones.

I wondered if they filmed it over a bank holiday weekend.

BishopRock · 18/03/2023 10:26

Monica's original floor was ideal for painting a track or hopscotch or various other interactive creative possibilities.

What a shame she spent so long changing it!

Buse was far too interested in her idea than working with her team and adhering to the brief, so I'm glad she went.

Sometimes the designers can be so fixed in their thoughts. "I'm going to do X, I know I've been asked to do Y, but I'm sticking with my vision, and hope the judges look past that and understand my intention." 🙄

Result: goodbye.

LolaSmiles · 18/03/2023 11:17

That brown room was awful in so many ways. The colours were awful, the sandpit and the logs were unsafe. The whole thing was so out of place with a nursery.

Tootyfilou · 20/03/2023 19:58

I have really enjoyed the previous series but I am finding these contestants so irritating!
