I'm looking forwards to Alison Hammond she's a hoot. Richard E Grant seems incredibly nervous in his opening speech.

Not sure on Kate's gloves

They've tried to Americanise it rather than embracing what is brilliant about British presenting and film. It's a shame.

Yes, I agree.

These days it's kind of like a less prestigious Oscars, with the nominees often not bothering to make the trip from LA. I know there's a lot of overlap between Hollywood and British cinema, but I think BAFTAs would be better as a celebration of British film rather than just another pit stop in 'awards season'.

Twawmyarse2 · 19/02/2023 20:24

I’ve just made dh turn it off as I’d reached peak cringe with the Emma Thompson and whatisface “interview”

Awful.

the80sweregreat · 19/02/2023 20:24

I like Colin Farrell and Brendon Gleeson , but I don't like the look of this Banshee film. The young guy in it is cool though
I thought EEAAO would do better , not that I liked it or understood any of it!

Whatsuppdr · 19/02/2023 20:25

On a positive though it's lovely to see such variety in the nominations. A lot of films in other languages, smaller directors etc. Plus I've not seen one bad outfit from anyone which is unusual for these things

Banshees is incredible. It's hard watching so you need to set aside time to concentrate it's not a popcorn film

All quiet on the western front is brilliant too

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/02/2023 20:26

Best British film, mostly irish

IcedPurple · 19/02/2023 20:27

I just Googled Angela Bassett and surely there must be some mistake about her age!

Youpillock · 19/02/2023 20:27

Kate n William look terminally bored.

Back when this was good, who wrote the script? Did Stephen Fry used to write his own?

I believe so, yes. I happened to be in Covent Garden once, on the afternoon of the BAFTAs, when they were setting up all the outside broadcast stuff. I got talking to a random telly woman round the back entrance of the Royal Opera House. She was waiting for the electricians to finish plugging stuff in, and she turned out to be both bored and chatty.

HamFrancisco · 19/02/2023 20:27

Some really good work being nominated, it’s the script and the interviews that are bringing it all down.

JemimaTab · 19/02/2023 20:28

I don’t get why the humour always falls flat at these things. Surely they have access to better writers than this? It’s excruciating. And as for Emma Thompson - she’s a bit of a ham IMO and always overdoes it. (See also: that “audience with Adele” thing a couple of years back).
Still, a good night for Banshees. Was glad to see Charlotte Wells get recognised for Aftersun too.

So am I! Only watching because remote is on floor and I'm knackered!

I tend to avoid war films.

And we're watching the 'highlights'. They're having to sit though the whole tedious thing! Who said royals have an easy life!

Having said that, they're not having to watch the toe curling backstage interviews. So there's that.

laundryschmaundry · 19/02/2023 20:30

Comedic delivery is something you naturally have, or don't. Read: Eugene Levy made it look effortless.

Not a fan of this musical performance. Confused

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/02/2023 20:30

Emma Thompson is always such an ott lovey

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/02/2023 20:31

Jesus Christ who invited Geri Horner - this just gets worse and worse

sarahh96 · 19/02/2023 20:34

What's Geri doing there, and why's she wearing a wedding dress?
