I'm looking forwards to Alison Hammond she's a hoot. Richard E Grant seems incredibly nervous in his opening speech.

Not sure on Kate's gloves

What the hell was that talking/singing thing? Anyone able to translate what she was saying?
It’s like the emperors new clothes that we all have to pretend is marvellous.

Yes I wanted to hear Joan A not that

MeinKraft · 19/02/2023 22:10

They should get Graham Norton to present this next year.

MeinKraft · 19/02/2023 22:10

Or Hugh Bonneville.

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/02/2023 22:15

Graham Norton has done it a couple of times hasn't he

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/02/2023 22:15

They are a tough crowd, I thought Richard did well

I remember he did it a few years ago and was quite flat.

DH and I enjoyed seeing the Steve Martin bit at the start. Fond memories of Richard E Grant in his film LA Story when we were first dating. With a very young SJP!

TrinnySmith · 20/02/2023 06:13

All Quiet - well it was a good film but it basically told the sad tale of the millions of soldiers who died - but didn't we all already know that?
It's a sad tale but - boring
It woudl have been much more interesting if we'd seen the battle from the generals' views - General Melchett in Blackadder summed it up beautifully - so a class/ cruel / mad generals version would have been better.

She takes her clothes off. It was a crap film - surprised it was even nominated.

Thanks, I'll give it a wide berth.

CZJ needs to lay off the fillers 😬

This. She was so beautiful and didn't need to mess with her face. What's wrong with growing older? Lots of beautiful older faces around.

I agree, but in Hollywood, the vast majority of those beautiful older faces will have had 'work' done.

Rhondaa · 20/02/2023 08:52

God, its like the Brits all over again. How can these performers used to being in front of the camera be so awkward and cringeworthy at an awards show.

Grant was ridiculously nervous, Hammond more suited to TV Quick awards tbh. Nothing against her but the bellowing laugh persona is a bit tedious. Yeah she made Harrison Ford laugh once, but I think all the celebs she interviews for This Morning probably feel sorry for the obese amateur interviewer.

That and calling everyone babe is very grating and frankly embarrassing for the BAFTAs.

So many may have had some work done but not to that extreme. Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Julia Roberts, Julianne Moore have all spoken out against having work done and look so much better as they age naturally. Generally people don't look better when they have lots done, IMHO.

Arrrrrrragghhh · 20/02/2023 09:46

Morning. DH and I had a blazing argument about this show last night. I really don’t understand why they televise these award shows. My industry ones aren’t . Clearly just a lovey love in at vast expense. Only one category the public could vote for so not relevant for us anyway. It’s very let them eat cake.

He’s says he’s in the business ( eyeroll at him using that phrase) so his opinion counts for more and he likes it. And the Oscars. Which is weird because if I suggest watching other semi scripted programmes with famous people ie reality tv he is very sniffy.

Richard E Grant was an odd choice and looked like he was on the point of breaking down all the way through. Wonder who came up with him. And Alison. She is not a darling of stage and screen and it showed despite a great dress.

I was more cross that EEAAO didn’t win anything. I thought it was innovative and well acted. And surely the script writing should have an award for making that make sense.

LadyEloise1 · 20/02/2023 09:54

@Zonder I think Julia Roberts has had work done.
She doesn't need to. She has such a beautiful smile.
I didn't like Emma Thompson's outfit. Too much going on.
I loved Carey Mulligan's dress. I love a square neckline. So flattering.
Less is more. Smile

the80sweregreat · 20/02/2023 10:39

I thought Alison Hammond was ok, although maybe next time don't go on about the after party. Nobody seemed to want to go anywhere
She looked lovely and it's nice seeing a woman who isn't stick thin getting these gigs too. Even if they probably won't have her or Richard back in a hurry ( maybe! )
We all know it's not always diet and exercise that makes this incredible weight loss for many of these celebs , but gastric sleeves and diet pills for a lot of them. (Apart from Davina who strikes me a woman who doesn't cheat like this !)

Loved Barry Keoghan , such a nice young man
I also like Emma Thompson , who isn't afraid to be herself! Go Emma !

I suspect all of the women you mention have had at least some 'work' done. Julia Roberts quite clearly so.

I agree that too much 'work' never looks good. The problem is knowing when to stop, especially when money is no object.

Saddlesore · 20/02/2023 11:03

Emma Thompson was beyond irritating when she was sitting beside Austin Butler in the Alison Hammond interview. She wouldn't let him speak! She kept interrupting, even when the question was directed to him. Poor lad only managed to get a couple of words in towards the end.

Rhondaa · 20/02/2023 11:03

'She looked lovely and it's nice seeing a woman who isn't stick thin getting these gigs too'

But she's an occasional daytime telly presenter. This was completely the wrong genre for her. Someone who was much higher profile would have been more appropriate. It'd be like having Anthony Hopkins present the Soap awards.

Also, fine to not have stick thin presenters but she is morbidly obese and that isn't anything to celebrate. Obviously don't shame but it isn't healthy or anything to aspire to. Normalising obesity is not helpful.

Rhondaa · 20/02/2023 11:08

What next , the Loose Women present the Oscars Grin

VIVS63 · 20/02/2023 11:10

It was unforgivable that they didn't mention either Bernard Cribbins or Leslie Phillips in the "stars we have lost" section. Appalling.

They will probably appear in the BAFTA TV awards In Memoriam though because I think most of their work was on the small screen rather than in the movies....maybe.

the80sweregreat · 20/02/2023 11:13

I wasn't normalizing someone being overweight! She has had weight loss herself in the past, which has been documented on tv etc.
Some people have weight that tends to yo yo
Plus many that lose it in the public eye also can afford gyms, personal trainers , weight loss tablets or a sleeve ( which are about 11k or more ) it doesn't always stop them putting it back on though !
Obviously BAFTA though she would be good at presenting this and she wasn't that bad.
Some parts were a bit cringy, but award ceremonies generally are these days

ageingdisgracefully · 20/02/2023 11:15

I thought Richard E coped quite well in the end. Alison Hammond - no, just no!

I don't normally watch this type of thing, but like others surprised at the poor performances in front of the mike of so-called stars.

The JA thing - wtaf?

I liked Hayley Atwell's look - polished and glam.

Was surprised Whale didn't do better.

I found Emma Thompson annoying but like her nonetheless.
