I'm looking forwards to Alison Hammond she's a hoot. Richard E Grant seems incredibly nervous in his opening speech.

Not sure on Kate's gloves

I think this could work. I watched the stand up to comedy awards the other day and they were so boring because it was just award after award, I'm cautiously optimistic about this section

Youpillock · 19/02/2023 19:39

Hate everything about it so far. Cringed inside out at the intro, singer was just awful, Alison out of her depth without a script and is Emma Thompson on something...

HamFrancisco · 19/02/2023 19:40

Good god, this is awful! Alison Hammond and Richard E Grant are the worst combo since Mick Fleetwood and Sam Fox.
The writing is awful!
And Emma Thompson telling Austin Butler an 11 year old fancied him! I watching through my fingers.

UrsulaPandress · 19/02/2023 19:41

The scriptwriter needs sacking

Cringe city.

marbledegg · 19/02/2023 19:42

I think it’s dire too, switching off here.

Whatsuppdr · 19/02/2023 19:42

It's the scriptwriter at fault not the presenters, I always feel sorry for presenters who are victim of a shit autocue

SequinsandStilettos · 19/02/2023 19:43

I watched Banshees but didn't love it. Am pleased for Barry Keoghan (just because his background with 13 foster carers is bloody inspiring) but had a soft spot for Ke Huy Quan, even though I didn't much care for EEAAO.
I feel about Barry's voice though similar to Lauren Socha's win for Misfits.

Wasn't she dreadful

Poor man couldn't get a word in and sat too close

Absolutely. The BAFTAs have been cringe for a few years.

And all the 'in' jokes about the actors. I don't know any of them and I don't really care. Just get on with the awards.

And see if Ricky Gervais is available for next year.

Gooseysgirl · 19/02/2023 19:46

So delighted for Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan 🥳 their awards are so deserved and will mean so much to the people of the islands where filming took place 🥰

Gooseysgirl · 19/02/2023 19:47

I love Alison but I had to mute that bit 😬

Also putting her hand on his knee and talking down to him.

I hate to be that person, but imagine if the genders were reversed and this was a much older, more established actor and an up and coming young actress.

Bippetyboppityboob · 19/02/2023 19:47

I was watching it, I do like award shows generally but its just unwatchable. The cringe intros, the cringe editing and interviews.

SequinsandStilettos · 19/02/2023 19:48

Will defend Sam Fox to the death cos she was chucked under the bus. She was 19 and trying to save the whole thing while Mick ignored it all. "When everything started going wrong I just wanted the floor to swallow me up. Mick is a genius, but I'd look to him for help and he'd just look at me with that big vacant face; the lights were on but nobody was home."

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 19/02/2023 19:51

The weird edit was because Carey Mulligans name was read out!

HamFrancisco · 19/02/2023 19:51

Oh god, no more Alison Hammond.

DillDanding · 19/02/2023 19:52

Ah, the 1989 Brit awards have never been bettered. I remember watching it at uni in the TV room at our halls. It was excruciating and hilarious.

HamFrancisco · 19/02/2023 19:53

Back when this was good, who wrote the script? Did Stephen Fry used to write his own?

IcedPurple · 19/02/2023 19:54

Yes I was wondering why we suddenly saw Kerry Condom walking up the steps, without any reaction shots.

Hopefully we'll get to see the unedited version, as it sounds like it would have been the highlight of the rather dull show.

MeinKraft · 19/02/2023 19:59

Who is the actress there with Brian Cox?

SequinsandStilettos · 19/02/2023 19:59

I do like Reg though. He got slated by Tapehead for doing Argos ads when he was only doing them for his Wah Wah film which was a passion project (free to watch on Freevee atm). I wanted him to win his Oscar just because his unabashed enthusiam (which face it, led to this gig) was off the scale.
Triangle of sadness was a brilliant watch - rented it off Prime.
Banshees is clearing up.

SequinsandStilettos · 19/02/2023 20:00

cleaning up, even

IcedPurple · 19/02/2023 20:00

I think part of the problem with the BAFTAs is that it's kind of moved away from its original goal of celebrating British film. It used to be kind of a British version of the Cezars in France or the Goya Awards in Spain, but now it's just another Golden Globes, expect it's in London rather than LA and with a speech from Prince William and a few British specific awards for a bit of local colour.

Whatsuppdr · 19/02/2023 20:02

That was a shocking edit by the beeb there!

I'm really pleased Banshees is heading for a clean sweep, hopefully it'll be mirrored at the Oscars too. Poor Brendan Gleeson though he's going to be the only cast member going home empty handed I think

IcedPurple · 19/02/2023 20:02

HamFrancisco · 19/02/2023 19:51

Oh god, no more Alison Hammond.

Stuart Heritage is referring to it as "Bafta Does The One Show".

It's all a bit silly and unnecessary, and makes it obvious that you're watching a highlights show rather than the real thing.
