CountessDracula · 08/02/2008 13:35

Oh I LOVE green wing
brilliant in every way

Ashes to Ashes, it has to be said, was utter shite

But bang on our era, dh and I were cackling at it
And of course there is Gene

CountessDracula · 08/02/2008 13:36

I might have to email dh and insist he pretends to be Gene tongiht

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/02/2008 13:36

I will carry on watching it just for him in any case

frankie3 · 08/02/2008 13:56

And I don't understand where Keely got her sexy red off the shoulder top, leather jacket and bead necklace from. Surely in the middle of all this trauma she didn't have the time to start co-ordinating her clothes and going shopping?

Sunshinemummy · 08/02/2008 13:59

I enjoyed it. Thought it had promise. She needs to settle into her role a bit more and we need to start caring about her like we did Sam, but oh I love the 80s and I love Gene in the 80s. Looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

mcfee · 08/02/2008 14:34

I expect she had nipped out to Chelsea Girl or Wrygges or Razzle Dazzle.... I thought she looked exactly how I wanted to in the 80's - I had a funny mullet and my mum wouldn't let me wear off the shoulder tops or floppy suede boots. If only I had looked like her then John Taylor (DuranDuran) would definitely have wanted me.

lottiejenkins · 08/02/2008 14:58

PG and KH are on Steve Wright in the afternoon next Thursday on Radio 2!!!

CountessDracula · 08/02/2008 14:59

ooh yes
and the Great Gear Market for stripey tights
and fiorucci for those plastic bag things

LieselVonTrapp · 08/02/2008 15:09

Wasnt it smashing? Took me right back - I forgot about phonecards

CountessDracula · 08/02/2008 15:14

God yes me too
I actually said to dh "what's a phonecard" and then I remembered..

Moomin · 08/02/2008 15:53

Am sorely disappointed with Ashes to Ashes. Got to one point last night where it was almost unwatchable. I could have wept.

Keeley Hawkes is crap and her character is far too knowing. Sam fought his situation throughout and his confusion was much more real (but that could be something to do with her terrible acting too)

Writers/producers have made a mockery of Gene Hunt. In Life on Mars we tuned in for Sam, but GH crept up on us through through 2 series (until I was wetting my knickers by the last few episodes )

Sexual chemistry between GH and Alex = zilch

References to the 80s much too contrived and self-conscious. Although I loved every track, there was far too much music.

All in all, it looked like a group of Year 11s doing their Media Studies GCSE had been given the job to write a sequel to LoM and this was what they came up with. I shan't be watching it again, regrettably, as I don't want to goo off Gene Hunt. Instead dh has suggested we buy the box set of LOM and watch that every Thursday at 9pm. Much better idea!

Moomin · 08/02/2008 15:55

goo off?

CountessDracula · 08/02/2008 15:57

sounds messy

bobsmum · 08/02/2008 16:00

I thought the self referential bits were the only way to deal with a sequel where the audience also thinks it knows all the answers. HEnce drippy inspector wifey is foiled every time she thinks she can just waltz out of the situation. She thinks she knows about walkie talkies/phones/TVs etc, but when they don't work she's totally floored. Similarly when they do work she's absolutely terrified and loses it - despite apparently being the professional psych. But agree KH is a bit simpery and one-dimensional.

hippipotami · 08/02/2008 18:00

That's what I thought bobsmum. Otherwise the audience would be bored as it was the exact same Sam story all over again. Instead, what worked for Sam did not work for her, so now she has to find alternatives...

I did not warm to her as a character, but I loved Gene Hunt... I was only 9, nearly 10 in 1981, and lived in Holland, so some of the 80's references went way over my head, but my dh was nodding and grinning like a demented thing

And of course there is Gene Hunt....

But the Shazza girl annoyed me. Not in the least the fact that I had her exact same haircut but in 1989, I was obviously so behind the times....

But Gene Hunt........ swoon......

PurlyQueen · 08/02/2008 18:36

Did spot a tiny inconsistency.
The cars had new-style lettering on their number plates. I guess it must be v hard to track down authentic number plates.

CaptainUnderpants · 08/02/2008 19:04

i enjoyed it last night . Found Gene Hunt to be much more of a solem charcter in 1981 , have to remeber that during this time Police wewre becoming more answerable and the old Gene Hunt ways are on the wane . You could see that last night when he was on to phone to his bosses and being answerabel to them , and when he and Keeley were interviewing suspect and he let him go when she wanted him kept in.

It is all tongue in cheek and the speed boat miami vice thing was very funny .

I dreamt about Gene Hunt last night as well ....

Pixel · 08/02/2008 19:13

hippipotami, my sister had that haircut as well! Was it a 'Purdey cut'?

SugarSkyHigh · 08/02/2008 19:39

everyone will hate me but I actually REALLY like Keely, I don't know why (despite her having such a chav name). I always find her eminently watchable. Is she really that one-dimensional?

weirdly I really fancied GH last night, despite NOT having seen the appeal for the entire 1st series (although I loved the 1st series and miss the John simms character, was it Sam)?

I have a peculiar feeling that I am now fancying GH because he is now in the 80's,which is when I was a teen/early twenties, rather than 1973 when I was (err.. quick calculation) nine years old. Can it be that GH is now appealing to my inner sexual awakening?????????????????????????

jezzemx · 08/02/2008 19:53

I loved it !!!!! Loved Gene Hunt and the usual crowd but KH (DCI Drake) was very annoying. I wanted to put my hand over her mouth and pinch her nose so that she would stop breathing. What was all the heavy orgasm style breathing about??? was it because she had been shot/dying in 2008 or was she just trying to be annoying?

jezzemx · 08/02/2008 19:55

Pixel I had that haircut. I always had very long hair and wanted to cut it. I remember going with my mam to the hairdressers and she asked the lady to give me a "pageboy" cut and that is what I ended up with. I cried for a week. I was only 7

hippipotami · 08/02/2008 19:58

Sugarsky, GH really appealed to me too in Ashes to Ashes whereas in LOM he did not appeal to me at all. But I was only 10 in 1981

My stomach went thunk when Keely walked into the restaurant, GH walked over, poured her a glass of wine without saying anything and sat back down.
For some reason that made me go all weak at the knees......

CaptainUnderpants · 08/02/2008 19:58

I always wanted a 'Purdey' cut but my hair is naturally curly so it wasn't to be .

Was 15 in 1981 , I though Purdey cuts were well before that though .

rantinghousewife · 08/02/2008 20:00

I enjoyed the bits without KH in
But, seriously, I do think she is supposed to be a bit stiff and analytical, she is supposed to be a psychologist, so she probably would be annoyingly knowing. That said, am not crazy about her but, we will see how she develops as a character.
I was only 9 for most of 1981 but the monochromatic interiors made me smile because everyone seemed to have those duvets with the grey/black/white on them.
Thought they made a bit of an effort not to make Ray so one dimentional[sp] too.

rantinghousewife · 08/02/2008 20:01

Oh yes and the manly wine pouring, most definitely did for me too.
